Football: Reds can be 'Invincibles' this season, says Unai Emery
LONDON • Unai Emery feels Liverpool can match the achievement of Arsenal's "Invincibles" by going unbeaten in the Premier League this season.
His predecessor Arsene Wenger won 26 matches in the 2003-04 term to become the second side, after Preston North End in 1889, not to lose a league game in a season.
Manchester City lost twice last season and Chelsea once in the 2004-05 term despite both clubs' considerable wealth and abundance of star players, illustrating how difficult it has been for teams to replicate Wenger's feat.
But Liverpool, who are on an eight-game winning streak, have racked up 16 league victories with just three draws and have a six-point lead at the top of the table as they host the Gunners today.
Emery believes the development they have shown from flirting with Europe to top-four contenders to current league front-runners - Jurgen Klopp's men were installed as title favourites by British bookmakers on Thursday - makes the Reds "an example" for his team.
He said: "Liverpool are doing it and they can do it (by remaining undefeated until the end of the season). The progression is clear.
"They were out of the Champions League, we need to be demanding of ourselves, but time and patience are very important."
However, the Spaniard will not only have to prepare for the "very big test" amid rumours surrounding the futures of Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey, and doubts over defenders Hector Bellerin, Shkodran Mustafi and Nacho Monreal, but also a looming Football Association (FA) charge over his head.
The FA on Thursday charged Emery with "improper conduct" after he kicked a water bottle at a Brighton fan during their 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium.
Arsenal were also hit by the death of their former chairman Peter Hill-Wood, who stepped down in 2013 after 31 years, yesterday.
The 82-year-old, the third member of his family to fill the role, had been responsible for the hiring of Wenger and the club issued a statement expressing their "deep regret".
It read: "As we celebrate the unique achievement of 100 consecutive years in the top flight this season, the Hill-Wood family were at the helm for the lion's share of this special century... Peter and his family's influence on the club cannot be understated."
But Klopp still feels Arsenal, despite their issues and having dropped seven points since Dec 2, remain "a really good team".
Brushing off Emery's "Invincibles" comments as mind games, he said at his pre-match press conference yesterday: "That is not the Unai Emery I know. This is not them waving the white flag.
"It will be a really tough game. (Pierre-Emerick) Aubameyang and (Alexandre) Lacazette are a good strike two. They are strong with the ball, lively, counter-attacks are crazy-quick. (But) we are focused on ourselves."

Stags, Protectors and Cheetahs aim to dethrone Albirex
Stags, Protectors and Cheetahs aim to dethrone Albirex
Since 2015, no local team have won the Singapore Premier League (previously known as the S-League), and no team have broken the Albirex Niigata monopoly since 2016.
But a trio of regular contenders and dark horses have emerged in a bid to end the Japanese team's dominance this season.
Five-time champions Tampines Rovers and two-time winners Home United have already beaten the White Swans this year, and kept the bulk of their respective squads.
With chairman Desmond Ong handing out multi-year contracts since coming on board in 2017, the Stags are benefiting from stability and continuity as their players show understanding of their roles and responsibilities on the pitch.
The young and talented - such as 19-year-old Singaporean Joel Chew and 20-year-old Serb Zehrudin Mehmedovic - are complemented by seasoned campaigners such as Canadian Jordan Webb, 30, and 41-year-old centre-back Daniel Bennett, into his 21st season.
"Having kept the bulk of players from last season definitely helps in terms of chemistry," said Webb, who has 79 goals in 208 league games over nine seasons. "I would be selling us short if I say we are not going for all the trophies. We have good atmosphere, good ideas and the energy levels are high."
His coach Gavin Lee added: "We want to be effective in and out of pre-season. If we can win and entertain with attractive football, that would be the ideal scenario."
The Protectors were the best local side last season, finishing as SPL runners-up and winning the AFC Cup Asean zonal final.
Like Tampines, they have retained 17 of 24 players, including South Korean linchpin Song Ui-young and the evergreen Shahril Ishak, who combined for 40 goals in all competitions last term.
They boast the impressive Under-23 trio of forward Adam Swandi, central midfielder Hami Syahin and central defender Taufiq Muqminin.
With their last major trophy coming in the Singapore Cup in 2013 and their last league title in 2003, Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki said it is time to end the drought.
"We want to build on our successes last season and go one better," said Saswadimata, whose side beat Albirex on penalties in the season-opening Community Shield last Saturday.
"It should be one of the most open seasons in recent years, but we won't write them off. They can only get better training full-time, without national service or school commitments (like local clubs).
Meanwhile, the dark horses in the nine-team SPL appear to be Hougang United, who added considerable firepower to a team who scored a league-low of just 22 goals in 24 games last season.
While they have never finished in the top half or won any major titles, the Cheetahs are gunning for history, with coach Clement Teo declaring that "third would be an underachievement".
Retaining forwards Iqbal Hussain, Shahfiq Ghani and Fazrul Nawaz, they signed Faris Ramli and welcomed back Croat Stipe Plazibat and captain Zulfahmi Arifin.
They initially secured the services of 2015 and 2016 top scorer Rafael Ramazotti, only for the Brazilian to go missing and sign for Mexican club FC Juarez. Instead, they have shored up their defence with South Korean centre-back Kong Ho-won.
Teo said: "Afiq Yunos was our only natural centre-back... The Ramazotti incident allowed us to sign Kong and it was a bonus we picked up Faris. He will give us a different dimension with his ability to take on players.
"With the team we assembled, we feel we need to be in the title race. Among our players, the mindset is, even a draw is underachieving."
Zulfahmi, who has returned after one season with Thailand's Chonburi, added: "Any team can win the league this season and Albirex are beatable. It depends on who are the most consistent across 24 games.
"We now have quality attackers and a great team, so we got to be more adventurous and clinical than before to fight for our targets."
Fans celebrated on the streets. even amid the rain, before heading inside U.S. Bank Stadium to watch Virginia rally to beat Auburn 63-62.

In six months, Hougang United have transformed themselves from wooden spoonists to dark horses for the Singapore Premier League (SPL) title.
The Cheetahs, beefed up by several key signings in the off-season, face an immediate test of their title credentials in their opener - five-time champions Tampines Rovers.
To boost a blunt forward line, which saw just 22 goals in 24 games last year, they have reunited Singapore international Faris Ramli and Croatian striker Stipe Plazibat.
The duo plundered 58 goals in all competitions for Home United in 2017 before spending last season abroad at separate clubs.
They have also brought in other Lions like Hafiz Abu Sujad and Afiq Yunos, and re-signed Zulfahmi Arifin after his one season with Thai side Chonburi.
The moves have had some touting Hougang as title contenders. It is quite a turnaround, considering that they were last in the nine-team SPL last year and have never finished in the top half of the league.
Their best results were finishing runners-up in the League Cup in 2007 and 2011.
Head coach Clement Teo is confident of ending the barren run, saying: "Looking at the players we have, we know we can win silverware. But we are also aware that no games have been played yet.
"On paper, yes, we look fantastic and I have no doubt about my players' capabilities. What we need to do now is to get them to work together, on and off the field."
The club have failed to deliver on pre-season hype before.
In 2016, they signed the league's reigning Player of the Year Fumiya Kogure, only to end up sixth out of nine teams. A year later, they roped in Philippe Aw, who built a stylish Home United team over two seasons and brought with him two key men, Zulfahmi and Azhar Sairudin. Again, the Cheetahs finished sixth.
While Teo is bullish this year will be different, he expects a difficult start against Tampines, and terms his team firm underdogs for the tie.
Tampines, seen by some as favourites for the SPL crown, thrashed defending champions Albirex Niigata 4-0 in a friendly two weeks ago, and then won 3-1 at Myanmar league and Cup champions Yangon United in the AFC Cup last Tuesday.
Tampines' strongest XI are almost unchanged from last season. Hougang midfielder Fabian Kwok says that while this consistency is beneficial, he believes that Hougang are better equipped against strong teams this term.
"Last year, we had good players and were competitive in many games," said the 29-year-old, who has been with Hougang since 2017.
"But we lacked the experience, and often lost by one goal to the top teams. This year, we've signed players who are established and they bring that experience we need."
Plazibat, who scored 25 league goals in 22 games for Home in 2017, stressed that the best chance of victory today is through their strength as a unit.
"We are aware of our capabilities (as players) but individual players don't guarantee you anything, you need a team," said the 29-year-old.
"We are very serious about wanting to start the season on a high, because it will be very difficult later on if we don't collect points early.
"My target this season is to win (silverware) with the team. If I score many goals along the way, that's a bonus."

Football: Hung jury for Hillsborough tragedy police chief accused of involuntary manslaughter, retrial likely
LONDON (AFP) - The police commander at the Hillsborough football stadium disaster faces a retrial after a jury on Wednesday (April 3) - failed to reach a verdict over his role in the deaths of 95 Liverpool fans.
Nearly 30 years to the day after the tragedy in the northern city of Sheffield, the judge in the trial of retired chief superintendent David Duckenfield discharged jurors who could not decide on 95 counts of gross negligence manslaughter.
The match-day police chief had pleaded not guilty at the 10-week trial to culpability for the fatal crush at an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough on April 15, 1989.
There is no manslaughter charge over the death of supporter Anthony Bland, as he died almost four years later and under the law in 1989 it is now "out of time" to be prosecuted.
However, the jurors at Preston Crown Court in north-west England did convict a former Sheffield Wednesday club official for failing to renew the stadium's safety certificate.
The jury, comprising six men and six women, had entered their eighth day of deliberations when they found Graham Mackrell, 69, guilty.
But they remained deadlocked over 74-year-old Duckenfield.
Â
Â
Â
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), England's state prosecutors, has indicated it will seek his retrial.
In court it alleged Duckenfield had the "ultimate responsibility" for allowing the crush to occur.
But the defence argued the case was "breathtakingly unfair" and said the defendant had "tried to do the right thing".
Dozens of relatives of the victims who had gathered in Liverpool - 40km away - gasped as the jury foreman told the court they could not reach a unanimous decision on Duckenfield.
There were cheers as the guilty verdict for Mackrell was announced.
Victims' families fought a long campaign for events surrounding the disaster to be re-investigated, with the CPS announcing the decision to press charges in June 2017.
The crush was Britain's worst sports stadium tragedy.
The final memorial at Liverpool's Anfield stadium for the victims was held in 2016, 27 years to the day since the disaster took place.
Families of the deceased unanimously agreed the service would be the last public event at Anfield in memory of the supporters who died.

Football: Andone header gives Brighton first league win of 2019
BRIGHTON, England (REUTERS) - A 79th-minute header from Florin Andone secured Brighton & Hove Albion's first Premier League win of 2019 as they beat seemingly doomed Huddersfield Town 1-0 to stem their recent slide down the table.
Andone rose to meet Anthony Knockaert's chip to power home from near the penalty spot just when it looked like Brighton's familiar failings in front of goal might again deny them.
Before the game, locally-born world boxing champion Chris Eubank Jr was introduced to the crowd in the hope that he would inspire a fighting performance from a side who had secured just two points since the start of the year.
But Brighton again struggled for a knock-out blow in a lucklustre first half with Iranian Alireza Jahanbakhsh providing the only excitement when his 41st-minute shot fizzed against the bar.
Huddersfield, who beat Wolverhampton Wanderers in midweek, were forced into a change with Aaron Mooy replacing the injured skipper Jonathan Hogg.
The Australian had little chance to shine as Brighton cranked up the pressure after the break with Andone having one effort well saved by Jonas Lossl before he finally beat the keeper for the win that moves Brighton five points clear of the drop zone.
Huddersfield remain adrift at the bottom, 13 points behind 17th-placed Southampton.
Alex Telles stepped up to the penalty spot to send Porto into the Champions League quarter-finals with a win over Roma in a game dominated by VAR. Tiquinho Soares put the home side ahead midway

Football: Brazil held 1-1 by Panama in lacklustre friendly
PORTO (REUTERS) - Brazil drew 1-1 with Panama in a friendly on Saturday (March 23), one of the poorest results and performances by the five-times world champions since Tite took over as coach in mid-2016.
Panama had never scored against Brazil before, losing all four previous meetings and conceding 16 goals in the process.
Midfielder Lucas Paqueta gave Brazil the lead after 31 minutes, but Adolfo Machado equalised four minutes later with a looping header from what looked like an offside position.
Richarlison and Casemiro hit the woodwork in the second half for Brazil but as the game went on Panama looked happy to hang on for the draw against a side who enjoyed 78 percent possession.
Tite, with one eye on the Copa America on home soil in June, opted to give starts to several young players, with Paqueta winning a third cap, defender Eder Militao his second and Porto left back Alex Telles making his debut.
But without Neymar, who is recovering from a foot injury, they lacked the kind of inspiration the Paris St Germain forward so often provides.

Football: Toffees aim to start new year on winning note
LONDON • With two losses and three draws in the Premier League, Goodison Park has not exactly been a fortress this season, much to Jordan Pickford's chagrin.
Everton also have just one win in their last seven league games, but the goalkeeper has demanded they "get that (winning) momentum going", starting with Leicester today.
Urging his teammates to arrest a three-game winless home run, he said on the Everton website: "Leicester is another tough game and it comes less than 70 hours after we finished at Brighton, but our target is to get the three points.
"If we get that result, it will spark a good start to the new year. We did not get the result we wanted to finish off 2018, but that is football and we have another game to turn it around in a short space of time.
"Yes (we have goals in the side) but we couldn't get that one against Brighton (losing 1-0 on Saturday).
"We work hard and we have a lot of depth in our squad and hopefully, those things will help us achieve the win."
Like the Toffees, the Foxes are no model of consistency after crashing back down to earth following their last-minute 1-0 league loss at home to Cardiff at the weekend.
The manner of the loss was bitterly disappointing for the King Power faithful as it had come on the back of two impressive league wins in succession over Chelsea and champions Manchester City.
But Leicester midfielder Nampalys Mendy told his teammates on the club website to "stay focused" and put that upset to the back of their minds ahead of their trip to Merseyside as they had "a big game against Everton".

Everton were looking to continue their winning ways under new manager Sam Allardyce (the Toffees are unbeaten in 5 since his appointment) when struggling Swansea City came to town. Here are my thoughts in no particular order of importance: Big Sam sticks with the same lineup that has helped him get off to such a rousing start.

Football: Klopp, Guardiola on shortlist for Premier League Manager of the Season
LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City's Pep Guardiola and Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp are on the four-man shortlist for the Premier League Manager of the Season award.
Guardiola and Klopp are locked in a battle for the Premier League title that will be settled in the final matches of the season on Sunday (May 12).
They will also slug it out for the Manager of the Season prize along with Tottenham's Mauricio Pochettino and Wolves' Nuno Espirito Santo.
Guardiola is looking to become only the third manager to retain the title in the Premier League era, with City certain to claim the trophy if they win at Brighton on Sunday.
But they have been pushed all the way by Liverpool, who have lost only once this season.
Klopp's team have amassed 94 points, the fourth-highest tally of any team in a single Premier League season, leaving them only one point behind City before Sunday's game against Wolves.
Pochettino has been recognised for keeping fourth-placed Tottenham in contention for a top-four finish despite not making a single signing for the last two transfer windows amid the disruption of a delayed move to their new stadium.
Tottenham will be guaranteed to finish in the top four if they avoid defeat against Everton on Sunday.
Nuno's Wolves, promoted last year, have collected 57 points - the most for any promoted team for 18 years.
Guaranteed seventh place, they remain in the running for a Europa League place depending on the outcome of the FA Cup final between Man City and Watford.
The final winner will be determined by a combination of a fans' vote and the views of an experts' panel.
The winner will be announced by the League Managers Association next Thursday.

Football: Arsenal climb to third with victory over Newcastle
LONDON (REUTERS) - Goals from Aaron Ramsey and Alexandre Lacazette gave Arsenal a 2-0 win over Newcastle United on Monday (April 1) and lifted them to third place in the Premier League above rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
Ramsey found his way through a packed defence on the half hour to score with a low shot before Frenchman Lacazette put the game to bed in the 83rd minute with a chip over the keeper.
The result put Arsenal on 63 points with seven games left, two above Spurs and Manchester United, with Chelsea a further point behind, as Unai Emery's side boosted their hopes of a top-four finish and Champions League football next season.
"The coach said we had to be patient and efficient in the box, and we did that. It's always like this against Newcastle. We are happy," Lacazette told Sky Sports.
"I can feel the difference in the atmosphere from last season. Now we can maybe go to the Champions League." The visitors had not beaten Arsenal since November 2010 and not won away since December and they appeared to set themselves up for a draw at best in North London, with five men in the back line and another four in front of them for most of the game.
The tactics worked until a sweeping Arsenal move in which Welsh midfielder Ramsey found Lacazette and then raced forward into the area to meet the return pass with a sweetly timed left-foot shot that went into the net off the far post.
Arsenal pushed forward repeatedly as the opening period came to a close but failed to finish off any of their moves, with Sead Kolasinac particularly guilty of some wayward passing.
Their best chance came just before halftime when Lacazette latched onto a pass from Mesut Ozil, spun round and lashed the ball goalwards only for Matt Richie to head it off the line.
Lacazette wrapped up the points, however, when Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles failed to clear a header into the area from Arsenal substitute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The Frenchman nipped in behind Lascelles and chipped an inch-perfect ball over Martin Dubravka to seal the win.
Newcastle remain in 14th place on 35 points, seven points above the relegation places, and have six games left.

Football: Fandi Ahmad's Under-22s aim to shine in Merlion Cup despite Hari Raya festivities
SINGAPORE - Their chief striker Ikhsan Fandi is jet lagged, having arrived from Norway on Tuesday (June 4) and having spent the following day celebrating Hari Raya with his family.
While Fandi Ahmad acknowledged on Thursday that goals may be a problem at the June 7-9 Merlion Cup, the former national striker promised to stick to his attacking football ethos as his Under-22 side take on the Philippines at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Friday.
"I'm confident in tomorrow's game but the main problem is scoring goals," the 57-year-old said at the pre-tournament media conference at the Copthorne King's Hotel on Thursday. "We need composure in front of the goal. I hope he (Ikhsan) carries on his form but he just arrived, he hasn't had a session with us before and he's jet lagged.
"Yesterday there were celebrations the entire day until the evening and I think I saw him collapse at the end of the day so he needs a good rest. We have some restrictions on him but we will manage.
"I'm sure we will attack and my style is that I like to attack. We always play good high-pressing games. I think the boys are ready and hopefully, they will do another good showing like in the AFC Under-23 tournament qualifiers. We're looking forward to this."
Singapore were undefeated in three Asian Football Confederation U-23 qualifiers in March and scored five goals in the process, although they failed to make the tournament proper in January 2020.
Ikhsan, who has netted four goals in 11 games for Norwegian second-tier club Raufoss this season, told The Straits Times that he will try to replicate his club form for the national side, but "everybody has to play their part" if they were to beat Philippines to earn a place in Sunday's final against Thailand or Indonesia.
The 20-year-old pointed to the likes of Balestier Khalsa's Daniel Goh and Geylang International's Zikos Chua, and said: "We have new players now so I think they will bring something new to the team... some new players who might show themselves during this tournament.
Â
"Who knows, they might play a very big part for us."
Zikos, 17, is eager to make an impression in his first outing for the U-22s, having made his competitive debut for Geylang last year.
"I think they've selected us (youngsters) for a reason and we hope we can try and replicate the good things we've showcased in our clubs and hopefully bring it to the team and try to give our 100 per cent," said Zikos, who pointed to his aerial presence and link-up play as strengths.
"I'm definitely looking forward to the tournament, I think it's going to be a good experience."
While Fandi acknowledged that Thailand and Indonesia have both fielded under-strength teams for this tournament, he believes the competition is beneficial to his side's preparations for the Nov 30-Dec 11 SEA Games in the Philippines.
"At the end of the day, the SEA Games is our target and we want to do well. This tournament is the stepping stone for the boys to push the level higher," he said.
While he joked that his players may be "3kg up" after the Hari Raya festivities, he added: "We'll be fine. We'll give a good fight and a good show. I just hope the fans will come, put their Hari Raya celebrations aside to come and support the U-22 boys, give them more motivation and confidence.
"Hopefully, the real lions (the fans) will come and roar for us."

LONDON • On the finest of margins can matches, and even seasons, turn. Tottenham were labouring against their rivals, seemingly out of ideas against an Arsenal team that led through Aaron Ramsey and had executed manager Unai Emery's game plan to the letter.
Spurs were staring at a third consecutive Premier League defeat and the last time that happened was in 2012.
The implications were grave. Mauricio Pochettino had conceded that the title was out of reach for his team after the losses at Burnley and Chelsea. But another reverse would have imperilled their top-four hopes while simultaneously encouraging Arsenal's.
Then Christian Eriksen floated in a 73rd-minute free kick and everything changed.
Harry Kane was in an offside position but, contentiously, it was not spotted. If the Spurs striker had not been ahead of the line, perhaps Shkodran Mustafi would not have felt the need to barge him.
But he did and when the penalty was awarded, Kane duly scored his ninth goal in nine north London derbies and the match ended 1-1.
"We'd had two disappointing results. It was a perfect game to get back and show the fans we're ready to fight for the rest of the season," the striker said after Spurs notched only their first draw of the season after 29 matches.
"It's a point, obviously we wanted three, but it stops the losing streak."
Spurs had their reprieve following their equaliser. Or did they?
There was still time for another twist with another controversial penalty awarded.
This time, it was for Arsenal. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the substitute, had the position on Davinson Sanchez and there was some tussling but the Spurs defender did not appear to trip him.
Nonetheless, after going down, Aubameyang found himself standing over a last-gasp kick to win it and give Arsenal a sixth win in seven league games.
However, Hugo Lloris read his intentions and dived to save.
There was more.
When Alex Iwobi crossed from the rebound, Aubameyang looked set to convert from close range - only for Jan Vertonghen to make a last-ditch challenge.
At the very end, another Arsenal substitute, Lucas Torreira, was given a straight red card for a high and out-of-control lunge at Danny Rose.
When the dust settled and the points were shared, Spurs could reflect on having stopped the rot and Arsenal nursed feelings of what might have been.
"If we assess the game, I think we were better than Arsenal," Pochettino said.
"I think it was a fantastic atmosphere for us. I think that after two defeats, it was important today to build up our positive way."
Emery felt that Kane's penalty should not have been given.
"You prepare one match, thinking of the best performance but different situations can happen in 90 minutes," the Arsenal boss said.
"One month ago I said to everybody my opinion: VAR (video assistant referee) is coming to help the referees.
"It's very difficult for the referees. To analyse with the TV is very easy.
"VAR I think will help them, and maybe today's match would be different."

LONDON (REUTERS) - Arsenal's Alexandre Lacazette is eligible to play in Thursday's Europa League last 16 second-leg clash against Rennes after his three-match ban was reduced to two games, Uefa said on Tuesday (March 12).
The French striker was shown a red card for a foul on BATE Borisov defender Aleksandar Filipovic in the last-32 first-leg match and was hit with a three-game ban by European soccer's governing body for serious rough play.
Arsenal appealed against the decision which was partially upheld and Lacazette's suspension was reduced to two matches, which he has already served.
"The appeal lodged by Arsenal FC has been partially upheld," Uefa said in a statement.
Lacazette missed the last-32 second leg against BATE which Arsenal won 3-0 and their 3-1 round of 16 first-leg defeat in Rennes.

Eligibility row no concern for Qatar
ABU DHABI • Qatar coach Felix Sanchez said his team would not be distracted from the "most important match in the country's football history" by a protest over the eligibility of two of their best players at the Asian Cup.
The National newspaper reported yesterday on the eve of the Qatar-Japan final that the host, the United Arab Emirates, had formally questioned the eligibility of Sudan-born striker Almoez Ali and Iraqi-born defender Bassam Al-Rawi.
World football governing body Fifa mandates that a player switching national teams must either qualify through their parents or grandparents or must reside in a country for five years after their 18th birthday.
It is alleged that the 22-year-old Ali and 21-year-old Al-Rawi have not met the residency requirements to be eligible. Qatar claimed that they have relatives born in the country which allows them to play, which the UAE disputes.
Ali scored his record-equalling eighth goal of the tournament when Qatar beat the UAE 4-0 in the semi-finals on Tuesday. Al-Rawi was suspended for that match but is expected to return for the final.
The Asian Football Confederation confirmed that it has received a protest from the UAE Football Association regarding two players and that it would be "reviewed in line with the AFC regulations".
Spaniard Sanchez, however, said that his players were focused on preparing for today's match at Zayed Sports City Stadium.
"We are only focused on the game we're going to play tomorrow, any other things not related to football is not in our minds at the moment. I'm not concerned at all," he said. "My players need no more motivation than to play an Asian Cup final."
The protest comes against a background of a political and economic boycott of Qatar which the UAE launched with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt in 2017. The four countries accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism, which it denies.
The political rift was manifest in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday when Emirati fans hurled sandals and drinks bottles at Ali and two other players celebrating their goals during the semi-final.
The rift also means that almost no Qatari fans or media have been in the UAE to support and report on their run to a first continental final.
Meanwhile, Japan captain Maya Yoshida called on tournament organisers to deal swiftly with incidents of "stupidity" that risk damaging the reputation of Asian football.
The Asian Cup has seen its share of controversial refereeing decisions, with host UAE twice awarded soft late penalties that left rivals players and coaches fuming.
Japan's semi-final victory over Iran also came close to boiling over, with Yoshida himself needing to be restrained by teammates after reacting furiously to a petulant slap from Sardar Azmoun.
"I think the AFC should control stuff about penalties and suspensions," said the Southampton defender yesterday.
"If (the Cup) is broadcast all over the world, you don't want to see any stupid things, especially after the game. We are representing Asia under the hashtag #bringingasiatogether, so it's important to represent Asia by playing good football and with fair play."
Japan enter the final as favourites to add to their record of four Asian Cup titles, but Qatar coach Sanchez insisted that the 2022 World Cup hosts were confident ahead of their first appearance in the final, after comfortably winning all six of their matches and keeping a record six clean sheets.
"To us, it's no surprise that we are in the final," he said. "I have full trust in the players, they are motivated to make history."

Football: Portugal coach says Ronaldo can stay at the top for several years
PORTO (REUTERS) - Portugal coach Fernando Santos believes that talismanic forward Cristiano Ronaldo can continue playing at the highest level for both club and country for at least three to four years.
The 34-year-old does not quite have the pace of old but showed with his hat-trick in the 3-1 Nations League win over Switzerland on Wednesday (June 5) that he remains deadly around the penalty area and has a knack of scoring goals that matter.
He can also embarrass opponents with his mesmerizing footwork as Swiss fullback Kevin Mbabu found out when he was left on the floor by a Ronaldo dribble.
Ronaldo, whose side face the Netherlands in Sunday's Nations League final, is now only 12 short of his 100th international goal and could conceivably reach 200 international caps, having amassed 157 appearances in his 16-year international career.
Having remained largely free of injury, there indeed seems no reason why he cannot keep going for several years, especially as he has already shown he can adapt his game to suit his age.
"I think he will play for another three or four years," said Santos, who took charge at Sporting in 2003 shortly before Ronaldo left the club for Manchester United.
"I'm not surprised by him any more," Santos told reporters.
"I was surprised when I first saw him at Sporting as a youngster. At that moment, we saw his quality and potential.
"He has maintained this quality at the age of 34 and he has very well-defined and strong aims... he is in great physical shape, he is always determined and he manages to maintain his intensity between games.
"It is not very common for a player to have reached 34 and scored around 50 goals in each season, but he is very ambitious."
At one stage, Santos became frustrated at the number of questions about Ronaldo.
"By the way, we are going to play against the Netherlands but I will answer another one," he said.
Ronaldo scored 28 goals in all competitions in his first season for Juventus this season. By his standards, it was almost lacklustre - the total was his lowest since 2008-09 when he was still at Manchester United - although he still added a Serie A winners' medal to his collection.
Sunday's match comes 15 years after he also played for Portugal in a final on home soil, when they lost 2-1 at home to Greece in the decisive match of Euro 2004.
Ronaldo himself told Uefa's website that his preparation and work ethic had helped him defy his age.
"I still feel good," he said. "The most important thing is your head, to feel motivated and happy, and to follow my path as a player, because I think I still have a lot to give and I feel very good."
