Football: Atletico make Barca wait by squeezing past Valladolid

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona were made to wait to retain their La Liga title on Saturday (April 27) as closest challengers Atletico Madrid scraped past strugglers Real Valladolid 1-0 after surviving late VAR penalty drama.
Ernesto Valverde's side would have been crowned champions for the eighth time in 11 seasons ahead of their home clash with Levante later had Atletico lost to relegation-threatened Valladolid, but Joaquin Fernandez's own goal was enough to seal the three points and delay the Barca title party.
However they had to endure a nervy final few minutes in which Jan Oblak had to be at his best and they survived a late VAR check over what looked like a clear Santiago Arias handball in the area.
"It's controversial, a ball that hits the hand and the referee's decision is to see if it's voluntary or not," said Saul Niguez, whose cross led to their fortunate winner and who gave away a penalty in a similar fashion during Wednesday's 3-2 win over Valencia.
The victory means second-placed Atletico are six points behind Barca, who now have to beat Levante at the Camp Nou later in order to take the title with three matches to spare before they host Liverpool in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals.
Should Barca win as expected, they will hold their nine-point lead over Atleti, who will no longer be able to overtake the Catalans thanks to their inferior head-to-head record.
However Diego Simeone's side will be satisfied they are nine points ahead of local rivals and reigning European champions Real Madrid, who travel to Rayo Vallecano on Sunday amid increasing speculation they will respond to a disappointing season by swooping for Eden Hazard and Neymar.
"It's what we deserve, no more, no less. We've come so far," added Saul.
"There were moments when we wanted to be first and others that I would say no, that's what we deserve."
UNDER-PAR ATLETICO
Valladolid meanwhile stay 17th, just one point and a place away from the relegation zone after a match they will feel they were unlucky to lose.
Atletico were far from their intense best, and the first half was a drab affair enlivened by a few Valladolid pot shots and a fine save from Jordi Masip, who did well to tip away Antoine Griezmann's free-kick.
However they upped their game early in the second half and got the breakthrough in the 66th minute when Joaquin launched himself at Saul's cross from the left and headed the ball past Masip into his own goal.
That didn't stop Valladolid though, and the away side thought they would be given a chance to equalise from the spot with just four minutes left when Arias appeared to handle a cross, only for referee Mario Melero Lopez to give a corner following a long VAR check.
They then forced saves from Oblak before Fernando Calero hit the post with a header two minutes into stoppage time, but they couldn't make their late flurry count.
Earlier on Saturday, Athletic Bilbao and Alaves did their chances of European football next season no favours with a 1-1 draw in the Basque Country.
Seventh-placed Bilbao are five points away from the Champions league places - with Alaves a further three points back - and could also see Valencia and Sevilla take the Europa league further away from them when they take on Eibar and Girona.

Alvarez gets the decision in unification bout

Alvarez gets the decision in unification bout

LAS VEGAS • Saul "Canelo" Alvarez won a close, often tense but uncontroversial decision over Daniel Jacobs in their hotly anticipated middleweight championship unification fight on Saturday night.
Ringside judges Dave Moretti and Steve Weisfeld turned in cards of 115-113, while Glenn Feldman scored it 116-112 as Alvarez (52-1-2 with 35 knockouts), unified boxing's 160-pound (72kg) division.
The Mexican added the American's International Boxing Federation belt to the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council straps that he won from Gennady Golovkin last September.
Alvarez has now all but cleaned it out - four years after capturing the lineal title from Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto to establish a foothold in the division.
After his second win since signing a five-year, 11-fight contract worth a minimum of US$365 million (S$497.4 million) with the streaming service DAZN, he told reporters: "It was just what we thought because of the style of fight he brings, but we did our job.
"I'm just looking for the biggest challenge. That's why I'm here. That's what I was born for, to fight, to defend what's mine. I'll fight anyone."
Jacobs (35-3 with 29 knockouts), who entered the bout as a 6-1 underdog with bookmakers, had trouble finding the elusive Alvarez for long stretches of the fight before a rollicking Cinco de Mayo weekend crowd at the T-Mobile Arena.
Although he tweaked his tactics to come on strong in the second half, landing 131 of 649 punches (20 per cent), Alvarez, whose patience, poise and exquisite technique were on full display for 12 rounds, still connected with 118 of 466 of his punches (40 per cent).
Admitting his opponent was "a tremendous champion", Jacobs, whose "Miracle Man" nickname stems from having overcome bone cancer, said: "I tip my hat to him (Alvarez). I gave my all out there."
The day had started with a hint of controversy when Jacobs came in 3.7lb over the contracted rehydration limit of 170. But, though the cost of the blown weight check was steep, he was content to forfeit nearly US$1 million of his US$10 million guarantee for the best chance of winning.
Having now claimed three of the four major belts at 160lb, Alvarez, who earned US$35 million on the night, may target World Boxing Organisation title-holder Demetrius Andrade for his customary September fight on Mexican Independence Day weekend to become an undisputed champion.
But a third fight with Golovkin, the first ending in a controversial draw, which was further marred by Alvarez's positive drug test in the lead-up to the rematch, would be a bigger hit commercially.
The Kazakh, who is also signed with DAZN and was at ringside, tried to talk up a third instalment.
He slagged off the fight, during which neither man was knocked down or in serious trouble, as "boring" and "just a sparring match".
Golovkin, whom many observers believed won their first fight in September 2017, tweeted: "They should give more to the audience, the boxing community. I didn't see any emotions. I didn't see anything special."

Infantino backs Korean bid for women's World Cup
LONDON • Gianni Infantino, the president of world football governing body Fifa, has raised the prospect of North and South Korea co-hosting the next women's World Cup in 2023.
The move would be a huge statement in terms of cooperation between two nations that have been deeply divided for the past 70 years. There have also been discussions about a possible joint Olympic bid for the 2032 Games.
Speaking at the International FA Board meeting in Aberdeen, Scotland, Infantino said: "I have been hearing for the women's World Cup in 2023, the two Koreas. I have been hearing it would be great. It would show the power of football. They have been in a very, very difficult situation."
He revealed that a bid by an Asian country for the men's 2030 World Cup could not be completely ruled out even though Qatar, which is part of the Asian confederation, is hosting in 2022.
Traditionally, Fifa's rotation rules have meant a 12-year gap before a confederation can host a World Cup again. There have been suggestions that China could bid for 2030, although it is more likely to wait until 2034.
A joint British and Ireland bid for 2030 is being considered, while a South American bid involving Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile has been launched.
"Generally, the more bidders we have, the better it is," the Swiss-Italian said. "I am so happy that we made a bidding process for the 2026 World Cup which was the first one in the history of the World Cup which has not been overshadowed by any scandal.
"We did it in a transparent and professional way, and we will take four years before we decide the 2030 World Cup, so we will have time to discuss all these topics."

Allegri reportedly eyeing Man United hot seat

Allegri reportedly eyeing Man United hot seat
LONDON • Massimiliano Allegri wants to be considered for the Manchester United manager's job when it becomes available at the end of the season.
Mauricio Pochettino, the Tottenham manager, remains United's first choice but other candidates, including the Juventus coach, have not been ruled out.
United are committed to conducting what club officials have called a "thorough and extensive" recruitment process to determine who should succeed caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Allegri, 51, led Juventus to four successive Serie A titles and took the Italian club to the Champions League final in 2015 and 2017.
The Times of London reported that he is understood to have been taking English lessons and would like to work in the Premier League. The Italian is particularly keen on taking the job at Old Trafford, which is vacant after the sacking of Jose Mourinho earlier this month.
Diego Simeone, the Atletico Madrid manager, has also been mentioned as a possible candidate.
Solskjaer, meanwhile, has claimed comprehensive victories over Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town in his first two matches in charge, but it is understood that the chances of the Molde manager being given the job full time are slim.

SPEED MERCHANT
The speed is his strength. I'm going to work on his finishing. He just has to calm down a bit. He has a good shot from outside the box. Within the box he must work to keep calm.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER , caretaker manager of Manchester United, on his striker Marcus Rashford.

The Norwegian club have insisted that the former United striker will return to his role in May.
Striker Marcus Rashford has played well in Solskjaer's first two league games, scoring the first goal of his reign against Cardiff and nearly setting up Diogo Dalot for a goal against Huddersfield.
Still, Solskjaer believes that Rashford can improve and, having scored 126 goals for the club himself, intends to give some advice to the 21-year-old on how he can become more ruthless.
"The speed is his strength. I'm going to work on his finishing. He just has to calm down a bit," Solskjaer told Norwegian broadcaster TV2.
"He has a good shot from outside the box. Within the box he must work to keep calm and just aim to put the ball past the goalkeeper."
The 45-year-old is also expecting a far tougher challenge when United host Bournemouth in the league tomorrow and when they travel to Newcastle on Wednesday.
"With all due respect to Huddersfield, the two battles against Bournemouth and Newcastle will be more difficult," he said.
Paul Pogba, who had a turbulent relationship with Mourinho, has found a new lease of life under Solskjaer with two assists and two goals in his last two starts.
"He's very important for us and when he plays at his best, he can make the difference in every game," midfielder Nemanja Matic said of his teammate.
"He played very well against Huddersfield but I think that he can do even more. Slowly, game by game he can improve. It was very important for him to score some goals."

Football: Scrappy win but Solksjaer lauds Manchester United

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wasted no time after his ninth victory in 10 games to fly to Lyon to watch Paris Saint-Germain's Ligue One match in preparation for Manchester United's last-16 first-leg tie with the French champions next Tuesday.
After overcoming another tricky hurdle last Sunday to emerge with a 1-0 win at Leicester, Premier League games against Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City loom, as well as the European challenge.
Although Solskjaer, who is on loan from Molde, had previously said he would return to them in May, he has since revealed that the Norwegian club's co-owners have wished him "good luck" and told him not to return.
The United caretaker manager, who took charge in December for the rest of the season, is certainly presenting a compelling case to be given the job full-time.
While United were not at their flowing best at the King Power Stadium, Solskjaer saluted his players for showing that they could win without playing well.
The Red Devils bounced back from a 2-2 draw with Burnley last Tuesday to leapfrog Arsenal into fifth place in the league.
He told reporters: "Our lads sacrificed everything they had. They know they can do better than this, but a clean sheet is always a foundation to build on.

  • English Premier League talking points

  • 1 SEAGULLS NEED TO UNCLIP WINGS
Chris Hughton may not be looking over his shoulder just yet but a fifth consecutive game without a Premier League win has seen his Brighton side drop perilously close to the relegation dogfight.
Cardiff's victory means the Seagulls are only five points clear of trouble and having picked up only six points from their last 10 league games, the manager will be eager to stop the slide.
While they will have an immediate opportunity to do that on Saturday against Burnley, Hughton will be wary of their opponents given that the Clarets are also fighting for their lives.
    2 TOFFEES' SEASON TURNING SOUR
Wolves gave Everton a beating and many reasons for envy on Saturday. Nuno Espirito Santo's men were organised, committed and dangerous - everything Marco Silva's side were not as they slipped to their sixth defeat in nine league games.
In Conor Coady, they possessed a defensive strength and discipline that was in stark contrast to the performance of Michael Keane, while in Joao Moutinho, they had the purpose and invention the home midfield failed to deliver.
But it was in attack where Everton were totally eclipsed by the quality of Raul Jimenez, whose work rate and contribution put the efforts of all of Silva's offensive players - Theo Walcott, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Richarlison and Cenk Tosun - to shame.
    3 COTTAGERS AWAIT 'DILLY-DING, DILLY-DONG'
While winning the league with Leicester meant Claudio Ranieri arrived at Craven Cottage with a reputation as a miracle worker, Fulham have seen little evidence of the Italian's supposed magical powers since appointing him in November.
The side with the worst defensive record in the league are just as bad as they were under Slavisa Jokanovic.
Second-last Fulham, the only team without an away win, looked like they were waiting to be relegated during their loss to Crystal Palace and successive home games against Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool are unlikely to lift the mood.
    THE GUARDIAN

"We could've done better higher up the pitch in terms of defending but we deserved the three points.
"We never strung passes together, we didn't control the game, but we're away with three points.
"Second half, I thought we were more concerned about the result than the performance and it showed."
Highlighting the growing influence and combination of Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford - who has now netted six in his last eight league games compared to just three before Jose Mourinho was sacked last December - he said: "Marcus has played a lot of games and he got a dead leg earlier on, but he struggled through it.
"Good players make each other better and I can only explain goals like this with quality."
Pundits have also noticed the 21-year-old Rashford's transformation - not only has his conversion rate in the league improved, but so has his volume of shots at goal from less than two per game to close to five under Solskjaer.
Former England striker Gary Lineker tweeted post-game: "Mature beyond his years. He's always struck me as totally confident and calm in his finishing."
While Alexis Sanchez played a part in Rashford's winner, he was otherwise pretty anonymous. But Solskjaer defended the Chile forward, who struggled to make inroads into the Foxes' defence.
The 45-year-old added: "He's played well today, but we just had to change the dynamics of the game a bit and (substitute) Anthony Martial has got fresh legs so I don't think there's any problem with his confidence, I thought he did well."
Still, even with an off-key Sanchez, Solskjaer and assistant Mike Phelan will be confident their attack can pose a serious threat to PSG's defence after they watched Thomas Tuchel's men fall to a 2-1 loss at Lyon, their first league loss of the term.

MILAN (AFP) - Inter Milan on Friday (May 31) announced the appointment of former Italy manager Antonio Conte as coach with the ambition of returning to the top of world football.
The 49-year-old has signed a three-year contract worth nine million euros (S$13.8 million) plus bonuses, according to press reports.
He replaces Luciano Spalletti who secured Chinese-owned Inter's Champions League berth for a second consecutive year on the final day of the Serie A season last Sunday.
With the 18-time Serie A champions searching for a first trophy since the Coppa Italia in 2011, Conte boasts a powerful pedigree.
He won the first three of Juventus' eight straight Serie A titles and the Premier League and FA Cup as Chelsea boss.
"A new chapter is opening in my life," Conte said. "I can't wait. I have chosen Inter because of the club it is, for its plans and ambition."
Inter chairman Steve Wang added: "I am sure Antonio Conte is one of the best coaches.
"I am sure he will help us to reach our target ... to make this club one of the best in the world again."

Conte had also been linked with a return to champions Juventus, after his successor in Turin Massimiliano Allegri was removed.
Spalletti took over at Inter in mid-2017 having previously coached Zenit Saint Petersburg and Roma.
But it proved a season of highs and lows with the club eliminated at the group stage of the Champions League in which they were drawn with Barcelona and Tottenham.
They fell in the last 16 of the Europa League.
Inter snatched fourth place, equal on points with Atalanta, but behind the side from Bergamo on head-to-head difference, to edge city rivals AC Milan by just one point in the race for elite European football.
Inter announced Spalletti's departure on Thursday with Zhang paying tribute to the 60-year-old who paid for failing to lift any silverware.
"A coach, a teacher, a friend," Zhang wrote on Instagram with a photo of himself alongside Spalletti.

Football: Luis Suarez says Barcelona 'looked like schoolboys' in Champions League loss

LIVERPOOL (Reuters) - Barcelona forward Luis Suarez said his teammates defended like children for the fourth goal they conceded in a shock 4-0 defeat at Liverpool on Tuesday (May 7) which sent them crashing out of the Champions League 4-3 on aggregate.
Liverpool forward Divock Origi got the decisive goal that completed a remarkable turnaround from Juergen Klopp's side, netting a low pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold after the defender flummoxed the visitors by taking a quick corner.
"For their fourth goal we looked like schoolboys, we have to be ready for all the criticism that is going to rain down on us now," Suarez told reporters after a miserable return to his former club, where he spent three years before joining Barca.
"We are very sad, we are in a lot of pain, we feel this pain even though we are professionals."
Spanish champions Barca were the only unbeaten side left in the competition but found themselves overwhelmed by Liverpool, sinking to a second straight shocking Champions League exit after last season's 3-0 defeat at AS Roma in the last eight.
The Catalans won the first leg of that tie 4-1 and Uruguay international the 32-year-old Suarez admonished his team for letting a huge lead slip away from them once again.
"We have to do a lot of self criticism because this is the second time that the same thing has happened to us. We cannot commit the same mistake two years in a row, there are many things we need to consider and think about," Suarez added.
"They (Liverpool) did what they wanted to do, which was to score early. They believed from the first minute to the last."
Barca coach Ernesto Valverde fielded the same starting lineup at Anfield as he had played in the first leg - just as he had done in the fateful second leg away to Roma.
But Suarez insisted the coach, who has led Barca to two successive LaLiga titles and taken them to the King's Cup final, should not face criticism for another European meltdown.
"We are the ones that played the game," Suarez said.
"The boss used the same tactics as in the first leg and he tried to do the same thing here. You have to say sorry for the attitude and the things that everyone saw today."

Football: Former Man United player Wes Brown believes top four still within Red Devils' reach

SINGAPORE - Alarm bells might have rung at Old Trafford after Manchester United's 2-0 loss to cross-town rivals City on Wednesday (April 24), with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer supposedly summoned to a crisis meeting with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
But former United player Wes Brown saw a glimmer of hope in the loss, one that could spark a reversal of fortunes that will - with a bit of luck - propel the Red Devils to a top-four finish this season.
"City have been the best team in the league over the last two years and they could not ease up on any games as well, and I felt we did well in the first half," said the 39-year-old former defender.
"We kept the ball well, pressed a bit... then City came out in the second half and scored two goals; I am sure David (de Gea) will be disappointed, especially with the second goal, but mistakes do happen."
United are currently in sixth place on 64 points, two behind Arsenal and three behind Chelsea, and with an inferior goal difference to both sides. There are three games to go this season, with the Red Devils facing the Blues in a must-win game on Sunday.
"The fourth spot is still alive, I reckon," added Brown, who will be watching the game with local United fans at the Clarke Quay Fountain Square at the Football Moments event, presented by Chang Beer and organised by Singtel Media.
"We have to win all our games from now and hope there's a fall somewhere else. It's all about creating our own chances, and getting a bit of luck on our side."

Like United, Chelsea and Arsenal have blown hot and cold at the business end of the season.
Chelsea have won just three of their last seven Premier League games, dropping points at home to the likes of Wolves and Burnley, while Arsenal have lost three of their last four league games.
United themselves have lost four of their last six league games, a dip in form which coincided with Solskjaer being made permanent manager on March 28. Before that, the Red Devils were unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions after the Norweigian was appointed interim manager following Jose Mourinho's sacking last December.
When asked what he felt had gone wrong, Brown, who played alongside Solskjaer in United's legendary treble-winning side of 1999, said: "I wish I could tell you!
"There's obviously been a drop in confidence from somewhere, but I know from my playing days that when that happens, you just have to work harder as a team and pull it out from somewhere."
The former England international added that, regardless of whether or not United qualify for next season's Champions League, having the right players at the club next season will be crucial.
There has been speculation over the futures of goalkeeper De Gea, record signing Paul Pogba and misfiring striker Romelu Lukaku in recent weeks, to name a few.
Said Brown: "It's not like you can get rid of seven or eight players and bring in the same number of top quality players in one summer. It'll take a period of time.
"But I'm sure Ole has got players in mind he wants to sign, and I'm sure he wants them in early. He knows what he needs.
"For example, after (the 4-0 loss at) Everton he talked about wanting more running, wanting people to be fitter.
"Ole's watching and seeing everyday in training, and he understands who has been giving it their all and who hasn't."

Relatives raise funds to continue search for missing footballer Emiliano Sala

LONDON • Relatives of missing Premier League player Emiliano Sala on Saturday began a privately funded search for his plane, which disappeared over the English Channel, after local coast guard called off their own rescue mission.
The news was announced by an online fundraising campaign for the operation, and confirmed to Agence France-Presse by Maria Jose Sottini, a friend of the Argentinian striker's family.
"The appeal launched late Friday afternoon enabled Emiliano Sala's relatives, via a specialised organisation, to resume research in the Channel early this Saturday morning," said a statement on the GoFundMe website.
"Two boats are leading the operations."
Around 4,000 people have so far contributed to the campaign, which was organised by Sala's agency, Sport Cover, raising almost €321,343 (S$496,167).
The target of €300,000 was reached within a day.
According to the BBC, fellow footballers including Ilkay Gundogan from Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain's Adrien Rabiot and Corentin Tolisso of Bayern Munich have donated to the fund, as did Sala's former manager at Nantes, Vahid Halilhodzic.
A light aircraft transporting Sala, who signed for Cardiff City two Saturdays ago, vanished from the radar around 20km north of the Channel island of Guernsey last Monday night.
The 28-year-old, who moved from French Ligue 1 club Nantes for a club-record fee of £15 million (S$26.7 million), had been flying to the Welsh capital for his first training session after saying goodbye to his former teammates.
Rescue workers formally called off the search for the missing plane on Thursday.
As investigators probe what happened, it emerged that while his football agent Willie McKay had arranged for the ill-fated flight, he did not choose the Piper Malibu plane or its pilot, who has since been named as David Ibbotson.
"We had no involvement in selecting a plane or a pilot and wish to make clear we do not own the plane that Emiliano flew on," the Briton said in a statement.

Football: Huge respect for Tottenham, says Guardiola after Champions League draw

LONDON (REUTERS) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he has "huge respect" for Tottenham Hotspur after Friday's (March 15) Champions League quarter-final draw pitted the Premier League rivals against each other.
With four English clubs in the last eight for the first time in 10 years it was always likely two would clash next month and while Tottenham have suffered a dip in form of late, Guardiola said Mauricio Pochettino's team would be a tough hurdle.
"Huge respect for Tottenham, I know them quite well," Guardiola, speaking at a news conference ahead of Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final at Swansea City, told reporters.
"They have different systems they can use, five at the back, a diamond, 4-2-3-1. I know how good they are at the front with Son (Heung-min), (Harry) Kane, Dele Alli and (Christian) Eriksen. Experience in all departments."
The sides will meet three times in 11 days with Tottenham hosting the first leg on April 9 before the second leg on April 17 and a Premier League clash, also at the Etihad, three days later.
"In that position it was three different competitions," Guardiola said.
"It's game by game, the first games influences the second one, the second one influences the third.
"We travel to London. London is closer than going to Spain or Catalonia," Guardiola added.

Guardiola's immediate focus is on beating Championship side Swansea on Saturday to keep alive City's hopes of a quadruple.
They will be huge favourites for that clash in south Wales but will be without defenders John Stones and Vincent Kompany as well as midfielder Kevin De Bruyne.
Benjamin Mendy and Fernandinho are also out.
"We will have to make changes," Guardiola said. "Stones on bench, not ready to play. He is still recovering.
"Vinny and Kevin not fit. We don't have too many options. Tomorrow is a quarter-final, that is the most important thing by far, to reach the semis."

Guardiola puzzled why VAR not in use at Swansea

Guardiola puzzled why VAR not in use at Swansea
LONDON • Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he could not understand why Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was not used at Swansea City after controversial decisions had aided his side's 3-2 FA Cup quarter-final win on Saturday.
City came back from two goals down at the Liberty Stadium to book a semi-final spot for the second time in three seasons and keep alive their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple in English football.
Championship side Swansea were left aggrieved at the awarding of two late goals to City which almost certainly would not have stood if VAR had been in operation.
First, with 12 minutes left, City were awarded a penalty even though Swansea felt Cameron Carter-Vickers had won the ball in the area rather than fouling Raheem Sterling. Sergio Aguero's spot kick then went in via the post and goalkeeper Kristoffer Nordfeldt's feet.
In the 88th minute, there was further controversy as Aguero was in an offside position when he headed home the winner.
Yet there was no VAR to turn to for a review, with the English footballing authorities having ruled that only Cup matches at Premier League grounds would have the video technology available. Guardiola, a keen supporter of VAR, does not agree with this policy.
"I'm sorry it was offside," the Spaniard said. "I don't understand why VAR was not used in this competition at this stage. Hopefully, next season this won't happen."
"The penalty was really lucky, but you need it, especially when you're in four competitions."
Guardiola, though, was full of praise for the character of his side, who came from two goals down to win a game for the first time in all competitions since he took charge of the club.
"We spoke at half-time that we need one goal and, after we score one goal, the rest will be easier," Guardiola added.
"After we scored the goal, we created a lot, a lot of chances, but the spirit and persistence helped us to win the game."
Match-winner Aguero said City's chance of winning the Champions League, Premier League and the FA Cup, to go with the League Cup trophy they lifted last month, was "always possible", but Guardiola again played down the possibility.
"Ask me at the end of April, then I will answer," he added.
"I know for people, it will be a big failure if we do not win three or four titles, but being in a position to do it is a huge success for the club."

Football: Spurs stun Man City to go through after seven-goal thriller

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Tottenham Hotspur reached the semi-finals of the Champions League on away goals after a 4-3 (aggregate 4-4) defeat to Manchester City in a breathtaking quarter-final second leg game on Wednesday (April 17).
Spurs, who won the first leg 1-0, will play Ajax Amsterdam for a place in the final against Liverpool or Barcelona after one of the most remarkable matches in the competition's history.
There were four goals in the opening 11 minutes of the game and non-stop action right up until the dramatic finale to an astonishing contest, when City had a stoppage time goal from Raheem Sterling, which would have sent them through, ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
City fans had celebrated what looked like the goal that sent them into the last four before the replay confirmed that Sergio Aguero was offside in the build-up.
It was a perfect example of the benefits of using technology but it was also cruel on Pep Guardiola's side who had been the stronger over the 90 minutes.
The contest exploded into life in the fourth minute when Sterling put City in front, receiving a ball from Kevin De Bruyne on the left flank and then cutting inside onto his right foot before beating Hugo Lloris with a beautiful, curling shot into the far corner.
Three minutes later though, Spurs drew level when City's French defender Aymeric Laporte's attempted clearance fell straight at the feet of Son Heung-min whose low shot flew in off the leg of City keeper Ederson.

Laporte was also at fault for Spurs' second in the 10th minute when he gifted the ball to Lucas Moura, the Brazilian feeding Christian Eriksen who found Son, the South Korean finishing superbly into the far corner.

STRUCK AGAIN

City responded immediately, however, as Aguero fed Bernardo Silva and the Portuguese winger's left-foot shot deflected off Danny Rose and beat the wrong-footed Lloris to make it 2-2 on the night.
The dangerous Sterling struck again in the 21st minute to level the aggregate score, ghosting in at the back post to convert a low cross from De Bruyne that had zipped across the face of the goal.
A thundering strike from Aguero in the 59th minute put City in the driving seat again - the Argentine blasting in at Lloris's near post after a magnificent burst forward and perfectly weighted pass from De Bruyne.
City were stunned though in the 73rd minute when Spurs substitute Fernando Llorente bundled in a Kieran Trippier corner to restore the London club's advantage through away goals.
With officials unsure if the ball had bounced off the Spaniard's hand or rolled off his hip in the goalmouth scramble, VAR was called into action and the goal stood for Spurs.
Then came the stoppage time video torture for the home support - Aguero burst down the right flank and delivered a low cross for Sterling to slot home what would have been his hat-trick goal.
The VAR call was correct and the Premier League champions were out - to the delight of Mauricio Pochettino and his players who celebrated wildly in front of the travelling Spurs support.
Tottenham reach the last four in Europe's premier competition for the first time since the introduction of the Champions League format.

Football: Spurs held to draw by Arsenal as City go back on top

LONDON (REUTERS) - As Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League with a battling 1-0 win at Bournemouth on Saturday (March 2), the real drama came at Wembley where Tottenham Hotspur's 1-1 draw with Arsenal included two dubious penalties, one of which was saved, and a late sending-off.
Tottenham's first league draw of the season allowed Manchester United to make up ground with a 3-2 comeback win that included two goals from Romelu Lukaku and moved them one point above Arsenal into fourth place.
There were also wins for Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion and Wolves against Burnley, Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City respectively.
At Wembley, as the clock ticked down, referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot for the second time when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang went down softly under a challenge from Davinson Sanchez.
But the Arsenal striker's spot-kick lacked power and direction and was easily parried by Hugo Lloris, with Jan Vertonghen preserving parity with a desperate follow-up clearance from Aubameyang.
There remained time for Taylor to send off Lucas Torreira in the final seconds for a reckless challenge on Danny Rose. The referee had earlier awarded Spurs a penalty for a contested Shkodran Mustafi foul on Harry Kane, who got up to equalise Aaron Ramsey's breakaway opener.
"It was another good derby, a passionate one, it had a bit of everything," said Kane.
"Towards the end of the game it went a bit crazy."
With Liverpool playing Everton on Sunday, Manchester City knew they had to win to keep up the pressure and move two points clear.
The outcome was never in doubt once substitute Riyad Mahrez put them in front early in the second half with a shot that Bournemouth keeper Artur Boruc would have been disappointed not to save.
But it was seldom easy for City and manager Pep Guardiola was forced to replace Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones with muscle injuries that are particularly unwelcome with many important games coming up.
United had to work far harder to beat battling Southampton at Old Trafford after Yan Valery put the visitors ahead with a fierce strike before the break.
United's Andreas Pereira produced an even better strike to equalise before Lukaku scored a brace to ensure Ole Solskjaer's unbeaten league record as caretaker manager continues.
"We knew we had to win the game today and did it," said Lukaku.
"Not our best game but we have to be happy."
Palace moved further away from the relegation zone with a 3-1 win at fellow strugglers Burnley thanks to second-half goals from Michy Batshuayi and Wilfried Zaha.
Brighton also did their survival chances a power of good after securing their first league win of the year against doomed Huddersfield Town. Romanian striker Florin Andone headed the winner close to the end as Chris Hughton's side, who had taken just two points in 2019, finally halted their slide down the table.
"This was the perfect team to beat today and we knew before the game it was like a final," said Andone.
"It was very hard, they played well and finally we got the victory."
Wolves' 2-0 win came courtesy of goals from Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez. It moved them on to 43 points, the most they have ever achieved in the Premier League.
West Ham brushed aside Newcastle 2-0 in Saturday’s late game with an early header from Declan Rice and a Mark Noble penalty.
The Hammers’ club legend Billy Bonds watched the triumph on the day a stand at the London Stadium was named after him.

Football: Man City's Sterling treated differently by British media, says Pogba

LONDON (REUTERS) - France midfielder Paul Pogba believes England's Raheem Sterling is sometimes treated differently by the British media because he is black and does not get the recognition he deserves for his achievements.
Speaking ahead of France's Euro 2020 qualifier against Moldova on Friday, the Manchester United midfielder also said Sterling was unfairly criticised for what he does off the field.
Manchester City forward Sterling said in December that newspapers were helping "fuel racism" with their portrayal of young black players, highlighting how they were treated differently to young white players by the media.
"Sometimes it happens," Pogba told Sky Sports when asked whether the media treated Sterling differently because of the colour of his skin.
"What I've been seeing is he's been criticised for houses and what I've been hearing things about, but nobody talks about what he's been doing on the pitch.
"He has ridiculous stats, he's scored goals and made a hat-trick not long ago. He's been top with City. Maybe if he was somebody else, it would be different.
"I always say racism in football shouldn't happen, because football is a sport, a beautiful sport and makes people happy. When somebody is doing a great job, he should deserve the same reward as somebody else who does the same job."
Sterling, who has 19 goals for City in all competitions this season, was also supported by England team mate Danny Rose.
"Raheem was only saying what we all say in the dressing room. It's sad really but he's 100 per cent spot on with what he said," Rose told BBC Sport ahead of England's Euro qualifier against Czech Republic.
"The stick he used to get from the media was bang out of order. When he put the (Instagram) post up about the media, we were all over the moon with that because we all agree. Fair play to Raheem."

Football: Liverpool, Spurs better than Man City at the moment, says Guardiola

LONDON • So much has changed for Manchester City in the space of a week.
Two rounds of matches and two defeats later, a one-point gap has turned into a sizeable seven-point lead for Liverpool (51 points) over the Premier League champions.
And should City continue their downward spiral at revitalised Southampton on Sunday, their title defence could be over by the time they welcome the buoyant Reds to the Etihad Stadium next Thursday.
While it is not in Pep Guardiola's psyche to panic, even with his side faltering as the title race picks up pace at the halfway mark, the manager would have recognised the need to sharpen up fast.
He acknowledged that uncertainty had crept into the minds of his players after the 2-1 loss at Leicester on Wednesday, their third defeat in four league games.
He told Sky Sports: "The fact is we lost three in four, and the last two, and if you want to be real contenders, we have to win again.
"As soon as possible, we have to try to win again for our mood, our confidence and our desire. You have to be confident to play and to come back."

  • CITY'S WIN RATE WITH FERNANDINHO - 71.3%
    WITHOUT FERNANDINHO  - 59.3%

The Spaniard admitted he had to "change the dynamic" in his team as Liverpool and Tottenham (45 points), who have leapfrogged City into second, were now "better than us at the moment".
He said: "You have to accept it, and it's important to accept where we are and they are improving.
"The reality is there are two or three teams better than us. We're not talking about whether we can get to (the level of) Liverpool, the issue is about winning another game, and thinking in ourselves about how we can improve."
While he still retains faith in "how exceptional the lads are in the locker room", he knows they face the greatest test of their character in the coming week.
"Good results make miracles in the mind. Now there will be doubts, and what you have to do is try to put in a good performance. But we are able to do that. I never doubt them. I don't forget who we are, how good we are," the City manager added.
However, he is also well aware his defence lacks a real shield in the absence of Fernandinho, who missed his second straight league game with knee trouble and remains a doubt this weekend.
City do not have a natural replacement for the Brazilian enforcer, which was why he was so desperate to land Jorginho, who eventually moved to Chelsea in the summer.
Without Fernandinho, their win percentage drops to 59.3 from 71.3.
Sky Sports pundit Steve Sidwell believes no other City player can perform the same role, although the former Fulham midfielder also felt the rest of the team were not pulling their weight.
He said: "Fernandinho does a lot of work there. But I think it's down to a lack of mentality that Pep Guardiola will not be happy about.
"Look at the results they've lost there, Crystal Palace and Leicester, and they'll be very disappointed with (the) Palace (loss) having been at home as well."
Another problem area for City is at left-back, where first-choice Benjamin Mendy is not expected to return from injury until at least February.
His replacement Fabian Delph was sent off at the King Power Stadium and he will miss the Saints and Reds games owing to a three-game ban. That leaves Oleksandr Zinchenko or Aymeric Laporte there and they are far from ideal options in that position.
However, Sidwell refused to rule City out of the title race despite their poor run, backing them to turn things around with "the quality they have got".
He added: "If there's one team, when you're top, who you don't want to be chasing you, then it's going to be this City team.
"The depth of squad they've got, they can go out and win games convincingly."
