Football: Liverpool draw Bayern as Man Utd face PSG in last 16 of Champions League

NYON, SWITZERLAND (AFP) - Liverpool will take on fellow five-time winners Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League, while Jose Mourinho's struggling Manchester United face French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Holders Real Madrid were paired with Ajax in Monday's (Dec 17) draw in Nyon as the Spaniards attempt to lift the trophy for the fifth time in six seasons, while Lionel Messi and Barcelona will play Lyon.
Both Liverpool and Bayern have a rich tradition in the competition, each winning it five times and Liverpool were beaten finalists last season.
Liverpool are the current form side of the two and sit top of the Premier League while Bayern, under new coach Niko Kovac, have been far short of their own high standards in the Bundesliga this season.
"That's the team of the hour, the league leaders in England, they are playing really good football, very physical, really stepping it up. We are looking forward to it," Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said of the tie with Liverpool.
"A tough cookie, but that's something to look forward to as a player."
Liverpool boss Klopp added: "It will be a tough one, an interesting one, and I am looking forward to it." .
Pep Guardiola's Manchester City take on German side Schalke 04 while Atletico Madrid, beaten finalists in 2014 and 2016, come up against Cristiano Ronaldo and Italian heavyweights Juventus.
"A very difficult match, with few goals," Juve vice-president Pavel Nedved predicted.
"No doubt Cristiano is the man of the Champions League, he has always shown that, with goals and victories. Our team is very strong and we can be calm and confident."
Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund will meet Tottenham Hotspur for the second season in a row, having faced each other in last year's group stage, while Roma meet two-time former champions Porto.
"We've already met them (Tottenham) twice. A strong opponent, the chances are at 50-50. The team has top players. We are also strong, it will be interesting," Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Sky.
Meanwhile, United go into a first ever meeting with PSG trailing Premier League leaders Liverpool by 19 points following Sunday's 3-1 defeat at Anfield, and face a formidable task against a side featuring Neymar and Kylian Mbappe - the world's two most expensive players.
"It's always difficult to play Manchester United," said PSG boss Thomas Tuchel. "They have lots of experience in this competition, they've won it numerous times. It's always difficult to play at Old Trafford, it's always a big challenge.
"It's the same thing against Mourinho. He has lots of experience in this competition and you must have respect."
Manchester City's director of football Txiki Begiristain warned the English champions will not have it easy against a Schalke outfit languishing in 13th place in Germany following a nightmare start.
"Teams that have been struggling in their leagues have still they've done very well in the Champions League," said Begiristain. "Schalke will be difficult. After a winter break, German clubs are always very dangerous."
Lyon coach Bruno Genesio says his team can draw on their group stage displays against City - a 2-1 win and 2-2 draw - ahead of their clash with five-time European champions Barca.
"We'll need to pull off two big performances, in the first leg and in the return, but we can do it. We did it against City," said Genesio.
"It's tough. They are a team that Lyon has already played against but never beaten. Barca are more experienced and stronger but over two matches anything is possible," Gerard Houllier, who holds an advisory role at the French club, told RMC Sport.
"The first match is key and we are playing at home. Barca are potential champions. We have nothing to lose. Everything is a bonus for Lyon."
Teams that finished in second place in the group stage will host the first legs on Feb 12-13 and Feb 19-20 with the return matches scheduled for March 5-6 and March 12-13.

Lionel Messi collected a record fifth Golden Shoe award on Tuesday for finishing last season as the top goalscorer in Europe. The striker scored 34 goals in 68 games for Barcelona, putting him ahead of Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Tottenham's Harry Kane.

Mbappe sent off in Cup shock
PARIS • Kylian Mbappe was sent off for a shocking tackle as Paris Saint-Germain were stunned by Rennes in Saturday's French Cup final, losing 6-5 on penalties after a dramatic game finished 2-2 at the end of extra time.
PSG substitute Christopher Nkunku blazed his sudden-death spot kick over the bar in the shoot-out, sparking scenes of joy among the Rennes fans at the Stade de France as they won a first trophy in almost half a century.
"It has been talked about enough at the club in the last few weeks for us to realise that we have achieved something historic," said Rennes coach Julien Stephan.
It was a remarkable comeback from the Brittany side, who had seen Dani Alves and the returning Neymar give Ligue 1 champions PSG a 2-0 lead midway through the first half. PSG looked poised to wrap up a domestic double, but Presnel Kimpembe's own goal gave Rennes hope and Mexer headed them level in the 66th minute to force extra time.
Penalties were already looming when Mbappe, who endured a frustrating evening, was shown a straight red card in the 118th minute.
He caught Rennes defender Damien da Silva on the knee with his studs, and can expect a lengthy ban.
PSG coach Thomas Tuchel said: "He had a slight muscle injury yesterday, he stopped training early and went to hospital for tests. Maybe that was in his head. You got the feeling he was lacking confidence and didn't feel free. The red card at the end, it's not him."
PSG fell short of securing the double in Tuchel's first season in charge, which will also be remembered for the club's Champions League exit to Manchester United in the last 16.
"I am sad," said Neymar. "We weren't quite up to it, but there is no point crying about it now. There is nothing we can do."

PARIS (AFP) - Neymar has paid a visit to Brazilian football legend Pele, who has been in hospital in Paris since April 3.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward posted a photo on his Instagram account on Monday (April 8) of himself alongside a smiling Pele in his hospital bed with the two holding hands.
A date for the 78-year-old's discharge has not been officially announced by the hospital which is based in the Paris suburbs.
The three-time World Cup winner was admitted to a hospital with a urinary tract infection last Wednesday, the day after appearing at a promotional event with France striker Kylian Mbappe.
Brazilian news website G1 reported that Pele had intended to come out of hospital on Saturday to return to Brazil but had been delayed by further tests and would stay under observation until he was 100 per cent.
The infection was not serious and was under control, according to members of Pele's entourage.
Pele's advisor told AFP on Sunday that he would spend one more night in hospital "as a precaution".

Football: Sarri will rely on Hazard

Football: Sarri will rely on Hazard

LONDON • Given the travails of Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata - the misfiring duo have scored only one and five Premier League goals respectively this season - it is no wonder Maurizio Sarri is hoping Eden Hazard can continue to flourish in the "false nine" position.
The Belgium international fired Chelsea into the League Cup semi-finals on Wednesday after replacing the ineffective Giroud and he also excelled in that role in their last league game at Brighton.
With the 27-year-old arguably having his best season in a Blues shirt - he has been involved in 18 league goals in 17 games, two more than the whole of last term - Hazard is again expected to lead the attack against Leicester today.
Despite his complaints when asked to operate there under former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, Sarri believes his star forward is so versatile that there "isn't a best position" for him.
At his pre-match press conference yesterday, he said: "Hazard is a wonderful player with a very high level of imagination. He needs to be let free on the pitch. So there isn't a 'right' position for him."
The Italian, however, shot down speculation that he was looking to bring in more attacking reinforcements to Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window.
The 59-year-old refused to comment on rumours that he wanted on-loan AC Milan striker Gonzalo Higuain, his former player at Napoli, and batted away a question that linked Bournemouth's Callum Wilson with a move next month.

Hinting Hazard would continue to plough a lone furrow up front, he said: "I don't know about Wilson. (Cherries boss) Eddie (Howe) is a friend and I want to see him happy.
"We started two matches (with) Hazard as a striker. I wanted to see the solution to work in other situations so I need two or three matches to see it.
"I explained the point of view to Giroud, then we will see. We played a good match against (Manchester) City and, against Brighton, we were dangerous for 60 minutes.
"Then it was a different match, more physical. We lowered the level of application. We need to avoid this (in the Foxes game) as we have to think to kill the match."
Chelsea have several former Leicester players in their ranks, including N'Golo Kante, but one player who will likely be denied a reunion with his former club is Danny Drinkwater.
The England midfielder has yet to play this season, and Sarri all but declared his availability, adding that "his problem is my football".
Despite being eight points off the top, the Chelsea boss played down suggestions his players were still in the hunt, insisting he had never seen them as "contenders" as Liverpool and City were "two teams a step ahead of us".
Sarri also expressed his sympathy at Mourinho's sacking as Manchester United boss in midweek.
While his predecessor Conte had a much-publicised frosty relationship, Sarri enjoyed a far more amiable bond with the Portuguese.
Declaring his "like for him as a coach and person", he expressed his desire to see Mourinho back "on a bench as soon as possible" before joking as long it was "not here (at Chelsea)".

Football: Chelsea target Pulisic not for sale in January, say Dortmund

BERLIN (AFP) - Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund have insisted Chelsea-target Christian Pulisic will not be allowed to leave in the January transfer window.
According to British media reports, Chelsea are interested in the 20-year-old US international, but Dortmund, who want €50 million (S$78 million) for the right winger, have blocked a possible departure next month.
"We won't let any important players go who are indispensable to achieving our sporting goals," director of sport Michael Zorc told Sport Bild magazine with Dortmund seven points clear in the league table.
"I strongly assume that Christian will still be wearing the Borussia Dortmund shirt in February."
Head coach Lucien Favre often prefers England international Jadon Sancho on the right wing, leaving Pulisic, who has also been linked to Liverpool, to start just four of Dortmund's 14 Bundesliga games so far this season.
However, the fleet-footed American has started four of Dortmund's six Champions League group stage games including Tuesday's 2-0 win at Monaco when Raphael Guerreiro scored both goals to put the Germans in Monday's draw for the last 16.
Germany midfielder Julien Weigl, linked to both Arsenal and Roma, is another big-name player struggling for game time who has been told he is going nowhere.
The 23-year-old has been relegated to the Dortmund bench following the arrival of Belgium's World Cup star Axel Witsel.
It also looks as though Japan international Shinji Kagawa also has no future at Dortmund as the attacking midfielder failed to make the 18-man squad for Monaco, despite seven players being ruled out.

Football: Huddersfield's Aaron Mooy dropped from Australia squad for Asian Cup defence

MELBOURNE (REUTERS) - Huddersfield Town midfielder Aaron Mooy has been ruled out Australia's Asian Cup defence after a thorough assessment of his ligament injury, the Football Federation Australia (FFA) said on Monday (Dec 24).
The injury he suffered was first flagged by the English Premier League football club but the FFA said the 28-year-old was desperate to feature in the Jan 5-Feb 1 tournament and had requested a second opinion.
Austria Wien midfielder James Jeggo will replace Mooy in coach Graham Arnold's 23-man squad as they defend their Asian Cup title in the United Arab Emirates.
"It is disappointing to lose Aaron for the tournament, however it was important that we left no stone unturned in exploring every option to get Aaron on the pitch for Australia in the UAE," Arnold said in a statement.
"We will remain in close contact with Aaron and Huddersfield Town during his rehabilitation and trust that he will make a successful return to action."

Huddersfield 1
Manchester United 1
LONDON • Manchester United's slender hopes of a top-four finish were ended in shambolic fashion when they surrendered an early lead to relegated Huddersfield, allowing the club marooned at the bottom of the table with 14 points to claim a wholly unexpected 15th.
Not that much has gone the Terriers' way in their two-season stay in the Premier League, but at least the side that share the earliest relegation with Derby can take pride in taking four points from the Red Devils in two league meetings at the John Smith's Stadium.
Huddersfield won this fixture last season and, despite a poor start, they had their chances in the second half to cause a similar shock.
In the circumstances, they were happy with a draw, however, which is more than can be said for United.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were hoping to stay in contention until the final day of the season at least, but this result coupled with Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Watford means a Champions League place is now out of reach, with no one to blame but themselves.
Afterwards, the Norwegian cut a resigned figure, admitting "the table seldom lies at the end".
He said: "We haven't taken enough points, won enough games, scored enough goals - it's always difficult when you lose your manager halfway through the season. It's caught up with us a little bit.

REALITY BITES HARD
We haven't taken enough points, won enough games, scored enough goals. It's always difficult when you lose your manager halfway through the season. It's caught up with us a little bit.
It shows us where we are. We're not living in fantasy land thinking we can catch the top two. We're far away, but we shouldn't be speaking about being far off the top four at Manchester United.
It's a great challenge for us, but I'm sure we'll make it.
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, Manchester United manager, being honest about the scale of the rebuilding job ahead.

"Today wasn't one individual that was disappointing, it was the whole team. We had so many opportunities to grab third or fourth and weren't able to.
"It's probably the right place to be for us, Europa League next year and, if City don't win the FA Cup, we'll have an early and bright start for Europa League qualifiers and that'll make it more difficult."
His players played some good stuff in the first half, mainly because they were allowed to, with Juan Mata, Paul Pogba and even Alexis Sanchez finding it easy to slice through the home defence.
Yet in terms of end product, the visitors were almost as ineffective as Huddersfield themselves.
They were only able to take the lead because Jonas Lossl failed to make a routine save from Scott McTominay's speculative shot.
It was the sort of mistake David de Gea has been making of late. The Danish goalkeeper was probably unsighted as the midfielder fired his shot but, even so, an effort of no great pace went straight through him to give United an early lead.
Pogba headed against the bar just before the interval, but United were unable to translate their clear superiority into goals. On occasions, they were downright wasteful in possession in the first half.
Solskjaer still felt safe enough to send on Ander Herrera for Nemanja Matic and Tahith Chong when Sanchez went down injured after the break but, just past the hour, the Terriers hit them with a route-one sucker punch.
With everyone but Luke Shaw up for a corner, Lossl caught Mata's cross and punted the ball downfield, where the bounce eluded the defender's attempt to cut out the danger, allowing Isaac Mbenza to run on and place a shot under de Gea for his first Huddersfield goal.
The stadium erupted, home fans having had little to cheer in recent weeks. When a chant went round the ground reminding Solskjaer's men they were playing a relegated side, United supporters joined in.
If that was comedy, the five-minute wait for a new corner flag after Mbenza snapped one with his goal celebration was pure farce, a reminder if one were needed that United were up against opponents of Championship standard.
United chased a late winner, but though Pogba hit the bar again, a draw was a fair enough result on the balance of play, even after eight minutes of added time, and there was no doubt who enjoyed it most.
"Champions League, you're having a laugh" was the taunt as the away fans made their way home.

Football: The great comebacks in Champions League history

Football: The great comebacks in Champions League history

LONDON (AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE) - Liverpool pulled off one of the most stunning fightbacks in Champions League history on Tuesday (May 7) as Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum both scored twice in a 4-0 victory over Barcelona.
Having trailed 3-0 after last week's first leg at the Nou Camp, Origi's 79th-minute strike sent Jurgen Klopp's men into the final against either Tottenham or Ajax in Madrid on June 1.
Liverpool become only the third team in the history of the European Cup or Champions League to come from three goals down after the first leg of a semi-final and progress after Panathinaikos in 1970-71 and Barcelona themselves in 1985-86.
Here are five other famous Champions League comebacks:
1. Barcelona 6 PSG 1 (2016-17: Last 16, 2nd leg. Barcelona win 6-5 on aggregate.)
Barcelona were on the right side of history two years ago, becoming the first team to come back from a four-goal first-leg deficit in the Champions League on a dramatic night at the Nou Camp when Neymar punished his future side PSG with two goals.
If PSG's 4-0 demolition of Luis Enrique's Barcelona in the first leg in Paris was a shock, the fightback was mind-blowing with the crucial last two goals coming in stoppage time.
Sergi Roberto came off the bench to write himself into Spanish football folklore with Barcelona's sixth goal in the fifth minute of added time.
"I didn't know if I was dreaming - I have never known a noise like that," said a shell-shocked Roberto after the final whistle.
2. Roma 3 Barcelona 0 (2017-18: Quarter-finals, 2nd leg. Roma win on away goals.)
Barcelona's luck ran out in dramatic style 12 months after their PSG heroics with Edin Dzeko's away goal at the Nou Camp proving crucial.
The Bosnian striker struggled to express his joy at Roma's achievement after his sixth-minute goal in the return game sparked an incredible turnaround by the Italian side.
"We did it when definitely nobody believed in us," said Dzeko.
There appeared to be no way back for Roma after they were routed 4-1 in the first leg in Barcelona. However, after Dzeko's early goal, a Daniele De Rossi penalty set the scene for Kostas Manolas' 82nd-minute header to spark wild celebrations led by Roma president James Pallotta, who jumped into Rome's Piazza del Popolo fountain.
3. Liverpool 3 AC Milan 3 (2004-05: Final, Liverpool win 3-1 on penalties)
Liverpool are no strangers to fightbacks in Europe, producing arguably the most staggering in a final against a mighty AC Milan side in Istanbul 14 years ago.
They trailed 3-0 at half-time against the star-studded Italian side after Paolo Maldini scored inside a minute and Hernan Crespo's excellent double.
But talismanic captain Steven Gerrard gave his side hope with a header early in the second period, and substitute Vladimir Smicer drilled in two minutes later.
A breathtaking six-minute spell was completed on the hour mark as Xabi Alonso scored the rebound after his own penalty had been saved by Milan goalkeeper Dida.
Rafael Benitez's underdogs hung on to force a penalty shootout, and Andriy Shevchenko, who had scored the winning spot-kick in the 2003 final against Juventus, saw his effort saved by Jerzy Dudek to confirm Liverpool's fifth, and most recent, Champions League title.
4. Deportivo La Coruna 4 AC Milan 0 (2003-04: Quarter-finals, 2nd leg. Deportivo win 5-4 on aggregate.)
After his side were trounced 4-1 in the first leg at the San Siro, Deportivo coach Javier Irureta admitted there was no rational reason to believe in a miracle.
However, his side burst out of the blocks in the second leg, holding a 3-0 lead at half-time thanks to goals from Walter Pandiani, Juan Carlos Valeron and Albert Luque.
Substitute Fran Gonzalez added a fourth with 14 minutes to go and, having prayed for success, Irureta honoured his pre-match promise by taking the pilgrim trail to Santiago de Compostela after Deportivo's unlikely 5-4 aggregate victory.
5. Chelsea 4 Napoli 1 (2011-12: Last 16, 2nd leg. Chelsea win 5-4 on aggregate.)
Chelsea rode the momentum of a stirring last-16 comeback against Napoli to the club's maiden Champions League title under interim coach Roberto Di Matteo.
Trailing 3-1 from the first leg after two Ezequiel Lavezzi goals and an Edinson Cavani strike, Chelsea sacked Andre Villas-Boas ahead of the return leg.
The Blues roared back at Stamford Bridge through efforts from Didier Drogba and John Terry, before Gokhan Inler briefly put the Italian side back on top only for a Frank Lampard penalty to force extra time.
Drogba then teed up Branislav Ivanovic to blast home a 105th-minute winner, and Chelsea would go on to beat Bayern Munich on penalties in that season's final at the Allianz Arena.

Football: Man City go top of the EPL with win at Everton, Guardiola says result 'is a lesson to never give up'

LIVERPOOL (REUTERS) - Champions Manchester City went top of the Premier League with a disciplined 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday (Feb 6) that saw them leapfrog title rivals Liverpool on goal difference.
Aymeric Laporte headed the opener just before the interval and substitute Gabriel Jesus sealed the victory deep in stoppage time for City, who returned to the league's summit for the first time since Dec 8.
Both City and Liverpool have 62 points, but Pep Guardiola's side have played one game more than the Merseysiders, who have drawn their last two encounters and host Bournemouth on Saturday.
With Tottenham Hotspur on 57 points, the title race has turned into a genuine three-way tussle and while City rarely sparkled against Everton, it was a key win in a busy week in which they had already beaten Arsenal and host Chelsea on Sunday.
"Four or five days ago, we could have been seven points behind, it is a lesson to never give up," said Guardiola.
"Now we have an incredible test on Sunday against Chelsea. I don't know how far we will get, maybe we will die in the road, but we are trying.
"We have played one more game than Liverpool, it's good to be top but Liverpool (still) has a game at Old Trafford," he added, referring to Liverpool's match at Manchester United on Feb 24.
The game against Everton was a re-arranged fixture caused by City's advance to the League Cup final and highlighted the difficulties to come for a side still involved in four competitions as there were some signs of weariness in their display.
Everton manager Marco Silva left two of his main creative players, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison, on the bench and opted for three central midfielders - a tactic that worked well as his side closed down City and limited their control of possession.
Yet after all that good work, it was Everton's sloppiness at set-pieces which cost them yet again.
David Silva curled in a free kick from the left and Laporte was somehow left unattended to head home from close range.
The goal was the 17th conceded by Everton from a set-piece in all competitions this season - prompting further questions about Silva's insistence on zonal marking.
After the break, ninth-placed Everton, who had been well beaten at home by Wolves on Saturday, stuck at their task well, but for all their graft, they rarely threatened City's lead.
The home side did get a sniff of an opening when Kyle Walker, deep in his own half, gave the ball away to substitute Richarlison, but the Brazilian's pass towards Cenk Tosun was over-hit and the danger passed.
It was a sign of City's strength in depth that their substitutes combined for the second goal deep in stoppage time with Kevin De Bruyne playing Jesus in on goal.
Although the Brazilian's shot was blocked by Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, he reacted quickly to head home the loose ball.
"Everyone (helped) win the game," said Jesus. "We know that it is going to be difficult. We want to play well in every game and at the end of the season we want the title," he said.

Football: Jesus returns to boost City's title bid

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Gabriel Jesus has returned to boost Manchester City's quadruple bid, offering much-needed relief for the club's record goal-scorer Sergio Aguero.
Aguero has been in prolific form for Pep Guardiola's side, scoring 12 goals since the turn of the year as City fight to retain the Premier League title.
But Jesus's fitness problems have piled an increased workload on Aguero, who played six games over 24 days in February while his City team-mate struggled with a hamstring injury in recent weeks.
However, Brazil forward Jesus is in competition to return as City visit Bournemouth on Saturday (March 2) looking to secure a victory that would temporarily move them two points ahead of Liverpool before the current leaders face Everton on Sunday.
Jesus's presence is a relief for Guardiola, whose squad has been stretched by the injuries to Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte in last weekend's League Cup final win over Chelsea.
City captain Vincent Kompany has made a welcome return to the squad, playing three games in a week despite his long record of injury problems.
But Guardiola admitted handling Kompany's persistent fitness issues has been a challenge.
"It's not easy, in one time he's incredible, the only guy I've met who doesn't train for two months then can play 90 minutes after one and a half training sessions," Guardiola said.
"He knows his body perfectly. It's a risk. But John Stones is back, like Gabriel, we'll see tomorrow.
"Nico (Otamendi) cannot play against Schalke and Aymer is injured so let's see what he have to do.
"He likes to play the way we try to play. I've spoken to him. He adapts quite well, when we are not here he has been injured, the intensity, he knows his position perfectly, he knows the game.
"He understands what we need to do. We cannot use him so regularly because of his fitness but when he is fit he's an incredible player."
The situation regarding England midfielder Fabian Delph, who has been struggling with an ankle injury and illness, is less clear however, with Guardiola confirming that he is available but has not been selected for the trip to Bournemouth.
"He was injured but makes the training session. He can play but he's not in the squad," Guardiola said.

Football: Hazard scores twice as Chelsea thrash Arsenal 4-1 to win Europa League

BAKU (REUTERS) - Eden Hazard scored twice and created a third to steer Chelsea to a 4-1 victory over London rivals Arsenal in the Europa League final in what looks likely to be the Belgium winger's final game for the Blues.
Chelsea destroyed Arsenal with four second-half goals that handed coach Maurizio Sarri his first major trophy at the age of 60, although that might not be enough to silence the speculation that he could also be leaving Stamford Bridge imminently.
Former Arsenal hero Olivier Giroud and Spain attacker Pedro each got a goal to give Chelsea their third European title in seven years, with the Champions League triumph in 2012 followed by their first Europa League victory in 2013.
Hazard, who joined Chelsea in 2012, looked emotional when he was substituted in the final minutes and held his hands over his eyes to an ovation in Baku's cavernous Olympic Stadium.
The Belgium winger has signalled he wants to move to Real Madrid in the close season.
"My dream was to play in the Premier League and I did it for seven years," Hazard told a television reporter shortly after the final whistle.
"Maybe I think it is time to say goodbye.
"We will decide in a few days and the only target in my mind was to win this final. I have made my decision already and now I'm waiting on both clubs. I think it is a goodbye, but in football you never know."

After a tepid first half, Giroud put Chelsea ahead in the 49th minute with an angled header.
The Blues doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Pedro diverted a cross from Hazard beyond former Chelsea keeper Petr Cech, who was making his last appearance before retiring as a player.
With Arsenal on the ropes, defender Ainsley Maitland-Niles collided with Giroud to concede a penalty that Hazard stroked home after 65 minutes.
Alex Iwobi clawed a goal back for Arsenal but Chelsea restored their three-goal cushion in the 72nd minute when Hazard swapped passes with Giroud to score his second.
Arsenal have lost five of their six major European finals, with their only victory coming in the 1994 Cup Winners' Cup against Parma.
The defeat in the early hours of Thursday - the final in the Azerbaijan capital kicked off at 11pm local time to coincide with peak viewing time in England - also deprives Arsenal of their last chance to qualify for next season's Champions League.
Chelsea had already made sure of their place in Europe's elite competition by finishing third in the Premier League.
But Arsenal coach Unai Emery is on more solid ground than Chelsea's Sarri who, after one stop-start season at Stamford Bridge, has reportedly been targeted by Juventus back in his native Italy.
"Sarri is a great guy, a great coach and he deserves this," Chelsea defender David Luiz said.
"The manager did amazing for this club. I don't know about speculation, now is the time to talk about the title."

Everton 4
Man United 0
LONDON • It was defeat on a sunny Easter Sunday afternoon at Goodison Park that signalled the end for David Moyes at Manchester United. And that was merely a routine 2-0 loss.
This was a humiliating 4-0 Premier League defeat at the start of a supposed new dawn. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has inherited, and is presiding over, a shambles.
United players require a reality check, their latest manager had declared last Friday. It landed heavily on them yesterday as Marco Silva's slick, expansive and clinical team recorded Everton's biggest win over United since October 1984.
The embarrassment for the Old Trafford club was not confined to the scoreline.
It was writ large in the apathetic displays of their over-paid players, in Anthony Martial diving for a non-existent penalty, in David de Gea throwing the ball at a dawdling Diogo Dalot and in the visitors starting with the same central defence as in Moyes' last stand in April 2014.
There they were, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, the latter getting himself injured yet again to add to the sense of chaotic deja-vu.
At least he offered a semblance of commitment that was otherwise absent on an appalling afternoon for United. Champions League qualification is the least of their worries.

  • League goals Manchester United have conceded this season, their most in a top-flight campaign since 1978-79 (63).

A sorry Solskjaer admitted to Sky Sports after the match that his team just did not perform.
"From the first whistle, everything went wrong. I just want to apologise to the fans. They're the only people with the badge on today who can hold their heads high, because we can't," said the Norwegian, whose team have now lost six of their past eight games and five straight away matches for the first time since 1981.
"Everton were better than us at all the basics. There are so many things that we need to do better to get a result.
"That was not worthy of a Manchester United team. We hold our hands up and apologise to everyone associated with the club. We have a perfect chance to make amends on Wednesday (against Manchester City)."
Everton were superb and battered the visitors not only physically but also in terms of quality, desire and work rate too.
United, fielding three changes to the side outclassed in Barcelona last week, were truly pathetic. A two-goal deficit at half-time flattered their spineless display.
Their refusal, reluctance or inability to press their opponents contributed to a comfortable first-half stroll for the hosts.
To put it into context, Solskjaer's men ran 8.03km less than Everton in total - the biggest negative difference for United in a Premier League game since defeat by Spurs in August (10.2km less).
Brazilian Richarlison fired the Toffees ahead as early as the 13th minute with an acrobatic high volley. Gylfi Sigurdsson made it 2-0 with a low drive that goalkeeper de Gea was slow to react to.
Lucas Digne then blasted in the third in the 56th minute after de Gea punched out a corner to the French full-back as United struggled to get even a foot in the game.
Icelandic playmaker Sigurdsson then put substitute Theo Walcott through with a clever pass through the legs of Victor Lindelof which the striker confidently converted.
Former United defender Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, blasted the team after the loss.
"I'm furious, the fact that he (Solskjaer) has to go over and apologise to the fans at the whistle is embarrassing," he said.
"There's some bad weeds not only in the garden but Japanese knotweed attacking the entire house and they need it eradicating.
"I have 100 per cent faith in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but he needs backing and this performance was rancid. I would imagine the more Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees these players, he will be losing faith in them."
United remain in sixth on 64 points, two behind fifth-placed Chelsea as their top-four hopes suffered a huge blow.
Everton manager Silva said he was happy with a clean sheet and United could surely do with one in their next match.
But that seems improbable now as City, who seem unstoppable in their title run-in, will be visiting Old Trafford relishing a big win on Wednesday.

Football: Southampton's Long scores fastest goal in Premier League history at 7.69 seconds

WATFORD, United Kingdom (AFP) - Southampton striker Shane Long scored the fastest goal in Premier League history as he netted after just 7.69 seconds of his side's 1-1 draw at Watford on Tuesday (April 23).
Long's record-breaking goal came immediately after the kick-off when he blocked a clearance from Watford defender Craig Cathcart, allowing the Republic of Ireland international to dink a cool finish over Ben Foster.
The 32-year-old's effort surpassed the previous fastest Premier League goal, scored by Tottenham defender Ledley King in 9.9 seconds against Bradford in December 2000.
It was only Long's fourth goal of the season for struggling Southampton, with three of those now coming in his last four appearances.
King was watching Tottenham's game against Brighton on Tuesday when he discovered that his 19-year record had been broken.
After King's goal, the next fastest strike in Premier League history was scored by Alan Shearer after 10.52 seconds for Newcastle against Manchester City in 2003.
Christian Eriksen scored after 10.54 seconds for Tottenham against Manchester United last season.
Long's historic goal didn't prove to be the winner at Vicarage Road as Andre Gray scored a 90th minute equaliser for FA Cup finalists Watford.
Even so, it could be a valuable contribution to the Saints's fight to avoid relegation.
Ralph Hasenhuttl's team are now six points clear of third bottom Cardiff with just three games remaining.

LETHAL LONG

The strains of Elton John's Rocket Man had barely finished booming over the loudspeakers when Long gave Southampton lift-off.
The goal actually came from Watford's kick-off as Roberto Pereyra played the ball from the centre-circle back to Cathcart some 40 yards from his own goal.
As the centre-back attempted to clear up field, Long charged it down and raced through before lifting in his landmark goal.
The Saints could have scored more with Nathan Redmond and Ryan Bertrand both hitting the woodwork.
Redmond was also denied by a good save from Foster and Long headed two other presentable chances off target.
Watford dominated after the break and Abdoulaye Doucoure attempted to convert a cross from Kiko Femenia but could only bundle the ball into Angus Gunn's arms.
Christian Kabasele felt he should have been awarded a penalty after a shove by Long in the area, but referee Mike Dean thought otherwise.
Southampton could not hang on and Gray swept home from close range to lift Watford up to seventh and keep Hasenhuttl's men looking over their shoulders a little longer.

Doubts over staying power

Doubts over staying power

LONDON • Unlike their top-four rivals, Arsenal have, on paper, the easiest run-in with none of the top six sides left to play after tomorrow's Premier League game at home to Manchester United.
However, there is a reason why pundits and bookmakers have placed them behind Tottenham, Chelsea and United to qualify for the Champions League next term.
When the Gunners continue to show the same weak mentality that punctuated the final few years of Arsene Wenger's tenure as they did at Rennes, crumbling 3-1 in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie, it invites questions about their ability to stay in the race.
Unai Emery's men were awful on Thursday night and were powerless to stem the dominance of Julien Stephan's team after the first-half dismissal of defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
The French Ligue 1 side won with strikes from Benjamin Bourigeaud and Ismaila Sarr, and an own goal by Nacho Monreal, after Alex Iwobi had opened the scoring for the visitors.
With their away form "a bit of a disaster", Martin Keown deems the Emirates clash to be "season-defining".

POWERING UP
I'm positive that with fresh players, with energy, with quality, that we have the possibility to put in a big performance against United and win against them.
UNAI EMERY, Arsenal boss, who wants every player to step up for the Premier League clash that could make or break their top-four hopes.

The ex-Arsenal defender told BT Sport: "They have been inconsistent, but their next game is at home and they have been strong there.
"Manchester United could be the perfect team to play next for Arsenal, the fans will demand it (the win) so bring them on.
"The problem Emery is having is he is not picking his best team. You have to pick your best team, I know Aaron Ramsey is leaving but, if you have to play him, so be it."
Pundit Michael Owen also feels "Arsenal cannot afford to lose the game if they want to get into the top four".
The former Liverpool and United striker told BT Sport: "It's really important for Arsenal.
"If Manchester United win and go four points clear, then it's going to be hard for Arsenal. They have got the momentum as well.
"Tonight (in France) was a big disappointment, no getting away from it. But that's what Arsenal are, they're an inconsistent team. You never know what team is going to turn up."
Emery has called for a "very big performance from each player" ahead of tomorrow's clash.
He said: "They (United) are in a very good moment, but we are together in the table and we played against them one month ago in the FA Cup (fourth round) - we lost 3-1, but I remember we did very good things, we had chances.
"We know Sunday is a tough match, an amazing match for everybody, we will be at home with our supporters."
"I'm positive that with fresh players (striker Alexandre Lacazette is expected to return to the starting line-up after being suspended in Europe), with energy, with quality, that we have the possibility to put in a big performance against United and win against them."
And goalkeeper Petr Cech dismissed suggestions the defeat at Roazhon Park would be damaging for team morale, insisting that Arsenal could "still overcome a two-goal deficit because in the end, the (away) goal we scored might play a big part (in the second leg next Thursday)".

Of 500 Singapore football fans surveyed, 76 per cent have planned holidays around sporting events, and nearly half (46 per cent) admitted to changing travel plans to ensure that they do not miss a match.
Some 94 per cent have travelled overseas to watch football, visiting an average of 2.7 countries per person, research commissioned by Expedia Group has shown.
Just for the Beautiful Game, some local supporters were willing to go as far as to lie to their other half, with 47 per cent of respondents admitting they had pretended to book a romantic break but intended to watch a football game instead.
Additionally, 28 per cent said they would miss a birthday to watch a match and 21 per cent would skip someone's wedding.
Travel group Expedia said yesterday that flight and accommodation bookings can increase by up to three times on the day of a football fixture announcement.
Searches for destinations also tend to grow in the lead-up to a football event, as seen from the 30 per cent increase in searches for Madrid in the lead-up to this year's Champions League final on June 1.
More than three in five (63 per cent) Singapore fans travelled overseas to watch one to three matches per season. Close to one in five (17 per cent) would travel more than 11 hours to watch their favourite teams up close.

Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium topped the list of most desired destinations to watch live football, as voted for by nearly a third (29 per cent) of Singapore fans. This was followed by Liverpool's Anfield (20 per cent), and London's Wembley Stadium (14 per cent) in third place.
"When it comes to booking, the rule of thumb is to book as early as possible. Football breeds some of the most passionate fans, hence the closer you get to the date of live action, there's a higher likelihood you will have less choices and end up paying higher prices," said Lavinia Rajaram, Brand Expedia's head of communications, Asia-Pacific.
"As a general guide, travellers should book their flights at least three weeks ahead, and book on a Sunday to maximise savings. For hotels, booking on a Friday night is your best bet."
