Football: Zohore gives Cardiff 2-1 win over Southampton in thrilling finish

SOUTHAMPTON, England (REUTERS) - Cardiff City's Kenneth Zohore struck deep into stoppage time to secure a crucial 2-1 win on Saturday (Feb 9) at fellow Premier League strugglers Southampton, who thought they had snatched a point with a 91st-minute equaliser.
Southampton's Jack Stephens bundled the ball into the net in added time, but Cardiff went back up the other end and substitute Zohore scuffed home a shot to give Cardiff only their second away win of the season.
After a slow start, Southampton upped the tempo in the second half but they were hit by a sucker punch when centre back Sol Bamba pounced, volleying home Callum Paterson's knockdown from Cardiff's first corner of the game in the 69th minute.
The win lifted Cardiff out of the relegation zone and into 15th place, while Southampton will slip into the bottom three if Burnley get at least a point in Saturday's late kickoff against Brighton and Hove Albion.
It was another emotional day for Cardiff following the recovery of the body of striker Emiliano Sala, who died in a plane that crashed taking him to join up with the Welsh club after he signed from French side Nantes.
The game was preceded by a minute's silence for the 28-year-old Argentine, who was Cardiff's record signing, and the players of both teams wore black armbands.
After beating Bournemouth 2-0 last week, the victory over Southampton marked the first time Cardiff have won back-to-back games in the Premier League, and Bamba believes his side had a little help from above.

"It can't get better, scoring the first goal in front of our fans. A lot goes through your mind. I know Emiliano Sala was looking from up there so it's good to get the three points," he said.
After picking up nine points from the first five league games of 2019, Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl was left to rue his side's defending.
"If you score an equaliser in added time, you have to take a minimum of one point. It would help us a lot for the mentality, the atmosphere and the feeling for the future," he said.
"What we did now was to roll a big stone in our way, and to remove that will take a lot of time."

Football: Lewandowski scores 200th Bundesliga goal against old club Dortmund

BERLIN (AFP) - Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski became only the fifth player in history to score 200 Bundesliga goals during Saturday's (April 6) emphatic 5-0 win over his former club Borussia Dortmund.
Lewandowski marked the milestone in style, chipping Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Buerki and volleying into the open net to score Bayern's second goal of the evening and reach his own double century.
He added another in the 89th minute, taking his tally to 201.
"I never thought I would score so many goals in the Bundesliga," the Polish striker told Sky.
"I still remember my first one very well."
Lewandowski's first Bundesliga goal came for Dortmund against Schalke back in 2010.
His brace on Saturday means he is now the fifth most prolific player in German league history.

He is just 19 goals off former Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes, who is third in the all-time list.
"I'm not too far away from Jupp's mark," he told Sky with a grin.

EPL clubs opposed to European changes
LONDON • Premier League clubs have come out fighting in the face of sweeping proposals to change the Champions League format, insisting they will "vigorously defend" the domestic game.
The 20 teams issued a statement after a meeting in London on Friday when they were told of moves by the European Clubs' Association (ECA) to significantly expand the number of European matches, and replace the system where the top four English teams qualify for the Champions League.
The chairmen were told that the threats to the league were two-fold. Firstly, changes to the calendar from 2024 could see the slots available for domestic games cut and those for Europe increased.
Secondly, changing the Champions League to four groups of eight teams, with promotion and relegation rather than teams qualifying from domestic leagues, would negatively impact on the race for the top four, one of the driving forces of fan interest.
The statement read: "All clubs unanimously agreed it is inappropriate for European football bodies to create plans that would alter the structures, calendar and competitiveness of the domestic game and will work together to protect the Premier League."
The extra matches - from six to 14 - would require a radical shake-up of the club calendar. But the clubs have been told that it is a real possibility - the calendar for after 2024 is being determined by the ECA along with Uefa and Fifa.
While legal action is a possibility if the fixture calendar is affected, they also have support from the European Leagues organisation. Lars-Christer Olsson, its president, said: "Our main objective is to safeguard domestic competitions."

Gunners master Napoli but Ramsey's injury sours win

LONDON • Aaron Ramsey could have played his last game for Arsenal ahead of his summer move to Juventus after limping off injured in their Europa League quarter-final second-leg tie at Napoli on Thursday.
The Welsh midfielder looked to have picked up a hamstring injury half an hour into the 1-0 win at the Stadio San Paolo after a high tackle on Napoli's Piotr Zielinski.
Arsenal manager Unai Emery, whose side beat Napoli 3-0 on aggregate to set up a last-four clash with Valencia, said he didn't know whether Ramsey, 28, would play again this season.
"It is a muscle injury. Normally it will be some weeks out for him. I don't know if we'll see him again before the end of the season," Emery told BT Sport.
Ramsey's injury was the one sour note on an otherwise excellent evening for Arsenal in Naples.
Once Alexandre Lacazette's free kick went in in the 36th minute, the tie was never in doubt.

Goals Alexandre Lacazette has had a hand in since his debut for Arsenal in August 2017 - 33 goals, 13 assists in all competitions, more than any other player for the club.

Emery was delighted that his team put in a heroic shift.
"I am very proud of my players and of our work," he said.
"We showed the players have the habit to play matches against good teams in a good atmosphere, and show big personality."
In the other semi-final, Chelsea will meet German side Eintracht Frankfurt after they were given a fright by Slavia Prague in a 4-3 home win on Thursday that saw them seal a 5-3 aggregate victory.

Already 1-0 up from the first leg, Chelsea were 4-1 ahead at half-time through three goals in the first 17 minutes at Stamford Bridge, courtesy of Pedro, an own goal by Simon Deli and Olivier Giroud.
But the Czech side restored their pride with two early second-half goals from Petr Sevcik as they threatened a remarkable comeback.
Chelsea, however, held on to set up a last-four meeting with Frankfurt, who beat Benfica 2-0 to go through on away goals after the tie ended at 4-4 over two legs.
A relieved Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri said his team need to be more consistent if they are to reach the final in Baku, Azerbaijan, on May 29.
"As usual in the last two months, we started very badly in the second half," the Italian said.
"We need a solution. In the last 10 matches, we've started the second half like in this match, so we need to solve this problem."

Reds will not spend big money

Reds will not spend big money

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp has said that Liverpool are unlikely to "spend the big money" on signings this summer, with the club investing to consolidate his title-chasing squad instead.
The Reds were the biggest-spending Premier League club last summer as Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri arrived to help close the domestic gap to Manchester City.
The club's financial strategy has since altered, however, to focus more on contract renewals rather than signings.
Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Andy Robertson, Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Rhian Brewster have signed new long-term deals since last April that will cost Liverpool £150 million (S$266 million) to £200 million in wage rises over the coming years.
"I don't want to talk exactly what we will do but I don't think this is a team at the moment where we have to spend the big money or whatever," the Reds manager said ahead of today's league trip to Fulham.
"The best way to do it is bring together a group of players, try to develop them altogether and then stay together for a while.
"And that was maybe the main problem of Liverpool for the last decade. When they had a good team after a season, they went all over the world. That will not happen this year for sure."
He believes Liverpool's development took "a big step" with the midweek Champions League victory at Bayern Munich, a result that set up a quarter-final date with Porto.
The German said: "When you think about how Bayern faced us... I never saw them being that defensive-orientated. They had a lot of respect for us but I am not sure we always have the same amount of respect for ourselves."
Fresh from a momentous European night, his team can earn a psychological boost going into the two-week international break by retaking the EPL top spot from City, who play at Swansea in the FA Cup this weekend. They have 73 points and trail the champions by a point with eight games left.
Fulham have very different priorities as they try to pull off a great escape from relegation.
After sacking two managers already this term, Scott Parker's first two games against Chelsea and Leicester have also ended in defeat.
However, he believes his side can cause a major upset and deliver a blow to Liverpool's title challenge.
"Hopefully we'll have an influence on the title race," he said. "We've got some very good footballers at the club and we need to start getting the best out of them...
"If we play the way we want to play, we can cause an upset and we can get points."

Football: Klopp rues missed opportunity as Liverpool settle for United draw

MANCHESTER (AFP) – Jurgen Klopp admitted Liverpool’s 0-0 draw at injury-hit Manchester United felt like a missed opportunity.
Klopp’s side moved one point clear at the top of the Premier League after their stalemate at Old Trafford on Sunday (Feb 24).
But it was a frustrating afternoon for Liverpool, who wasted a chance to go three points above title rivals Manchester City.  The Reds managed only one shot on target and Klopp felt their erratic display was largely due to the number of injuries suffered by both teams.
Liverpool lost Roberto Firmino to a first half injury, while United saw Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard limp off before the interval.
“It was a strange game. We started really well, exactly like we wanted. Then the injury crisis started and that obviously cost us the rhythm. It was like ‘what’s going on’,” Klopp said.
“In the end we have to admit United played with a completely new midfield and strikers. We lost our rhythm and couldn’t get it back.
“It was a game without a lot of highlights. It was an intense situation. It was a point United wanted and we lost two.
“Some days United are beatable. You have to do it and we didn’t do it.”
Liverpool’s second successive goalless draw came at the end of a week in which they failed to break down Bayern Munich in the Champions League last 16 first leg.  None of Liverpool’s attacking stars shone against United, with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane both quiet.
Klopp conceded Liverpool had lacked composure at critical moments and he called on them to bounce back against Watford in midweek.
“I’m not here to be frustrated. I always take what I get from the boys. It doesn’t feel world-class in the moment. That’s OK,” Klopp said.
“We didn’t play a lot of wonderful balls in the final third. The build-up from deep was OK, but then you need to be more flexible.
“You need to keep the ball in the right areas, to shoot. We didn’t do it often enough.
“It is a point gained because we have one more than before but it doesn’t feel like that. Now Wednesday is our next game.”
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was impressed with the way his players kept Liverpool at bay despite so many injuries.
“Everything that could have gone wrong in the first half went wrong. We had four injuries – we had to keep Marcus Rashford on – it seemed like it was going to be a tough afternoon,” he said.
“I can’t remember Liverpool having a chance. Even though they had possession, I can’t remember David de Gea making a save.”Â

Reds back in the big league, says Klopp

Reds back in the big league, says Klopp

MUNICH • It was a night when Liverpool reminded themselves and their opponents why a banner can be seen at their games to proclaim "European football royalty".
When the action was finally over, Jurgen Klopp ran across the pitch to pump his fists towards the Liverpool fans in the highest tier of Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena.
He was ecstatic, and deservedly so. Following the 3-1 Champions League last-16 second-leg win in the German champions' backyard on Wednesday, the Liverpool manager declared his team are back as one of European football's powerhouses.
Few would argue with him and his players could celebrate a satisfying night of mature and controlled football. And, for the first time since 2009, the English Premier League has four teams in the quarter-finals.
Liverpool had lost all their away games in the Champions League this season before Wednesday. But the win saw them join Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham in the last eight, while Germany will be without a quarter-finalist for the first time in 11 years.
"It is an important (win) for different reasons. Important money-wise but also confidence-wise," Klopp told reporters after the match.
"It's not about playing your best free-flowing football, that's not possible against this quality because you cannot use your speed as the other team is quick as well. You have to find different ways and tonight we found them.
"Liverpool's self-awareness now must be 'We are back. We are back on the landscape. Back in big football'. That was part of the plan when we started the project. We still have space for improvement but beating Bayern here is a big one."
Liverpool, five-time European champions and last season's Champions League runners-up, eased past the Bavarians with two goals from Sadio Mane and one from Virgil van Dijk after a goal-less first leg at Anfield.
The Reds shrugged off an early ankle injury to captain Jordan Henderson and kept their cool after Bayern's equaliser through Joel Matip's own goal late in the first half.

LANDMARK VICTORY
It is an important (win) for different reasons. Important money-wise but also confidence-wise.
JURGEN KLOPP, Liverpool manager, on the significance of the result in Germany.

It was a intelligent, resilient and, when required, incisive display from Klopp's side.
Mane was magnificent in attack, James Milner immense in midfield and van Dijk, as usual, outstanding at the back.
It is not often that Bayern are made to look so ordinary, especially on their own ground. But the evidence is irrefutable that the 28-time Bundesliga champions are on the wane, possibly as a consequence of their repetitive domestic success.
Yet that should not deflect from Liverpool's performance on a night where Klopp's players defended stoutly, were clinical with their chances and never showed a flicker of trepidation.
Perhaps, on reflection, Bayern will regret not being more adventurous in the first leg. The whole point of the away-goals rule is to encourage teams to attack. But Bayern opted for ploys of conservatism at Anfield whereas Liverpool were far more ambitious with their approach to being on foreign soil.
For Mane in particular, it was a triumphant night. Arguably Liverpool's most effective attacker since the turn of the year, these were his 18th and 19th goals of the season.
Ten have come in the last 10 matches and his first one here was a wonderfully composed finish once he had controlled a long ball forward, swivelled away from Rafinha and sidestepped Manuel Neuer to float the ball delicately inside the post, almost in slow motion.
The problem for Bayern had nothing to do with a lack of endeavour. It was a lack of ideas, of inspiration, of wit and creativity.
Their coach Niko Kovac, thought otherwise, preferring to give credit to his counterpart after his team failed to respond to the two headed goals from Mane and van Dijk in the second half.
"I know Jurgen Klopp and he is very good at eliminating the opponents' strengths and he showed that again today," he said. "The 1-2 took away our belief. After that Liverpool was the better team."

Ikhsan opens account for new club

Ikhsan Fandi took all of two minutes to net his first goal for his new club, Raufoss IL, and helped them beat Elverum Fotball 6-1 early yesterday morning (Singapore time) at the Raufoss Storhall indoor arena in Norway.
The 19-year-old, who became the first Lion to join a European team in 30 years when he signed a two-year deal with the Norwegian second-tier side earlier this month, was brought on with fellow forward Thierry Dabove in the 59th minute of a pre-season friendly against the third-tier opponents.
The duo combined to deadly effect shortly after, when Dabove's shot was parried by former Raufoss goalkeeper Andreas Heggen, only for Ikhsan to show his predatory instincts by beating two defenders to thump the loose ball home with his right foot inside the six-yard box and make it 3-1 for Raufoss.
The new Raufoss No. 18 also displayed his willingness to run at the defence before he recorded his first assist by picking out Ryan Doghman with a through ball in the 84th minute to increase the lead to 5-1.
Ikhsan told The Sunday Times: "I'm glad I got the first goal out of the way quickly, but there are always things to improve on.
"The coaches were happy with my 30-minute performance. I just wanted to express myself and show the people here I can play football.

Raufoss and Ikhsan will face a sterner test when they continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly against top-division club Odds Ballklubb on Thursday.
They will kick off the new season at Nest-Sotra on March 31.

1 HOSTILE WATFORD GIVE SILVA AN EARFUL

They say time is usually a great healer, but the memories of their former manager's acrimonious departure last year clearly still rankles with Watford fans, who were asked to request tribute songs for Marco Silva to be played before Saturday's win over Everton.
Al Wilson's The Snake and Since U Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson were among those chosen as the hosts created a hostile reception for the Portuguese on his return to Vicarage Road. It had the desired effect as Andre Gray's winner condemned Silva's men to defeat despite their striking the crossbar on two occasions and the beleaguered Toffees boss admitted there was a "lack of confidence" running through his side.

2 HONEYMOON OVER FOR SAINTS BOSS HASENHUTTL

The anger emanating from Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl after Saturday's last-gasp 2-1 loss at home to fellow strugglers Cardiff was all the more understandable given what lies ahead.
The glow surrounding the Saints has quickly diminished after two wins in 10 matches since Christmas, and they now face a testing run of games, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Spurs to play in three of their next four matches.
While Southampton have scored in their past seven matches, they remain too predictable in attack, especially without the injured Danny Ings.

3 SETTLED DEFENCE PAYS DIVIDENDS FOR BURNLEY

Burnley's defence and goalkeeper proved to be the difference-maker as the fine margins of the top flight were exposed at the Amex Stadium after they defeated Brighton 3-1 on Saturday.
Since Tom Heaton has returned in goal, the Clarets' back five have looked more secure, with James Tarkowski and Ben Mee the heroes in front of their captain.
Mee may not be the tallest, the quickest or the most cultured defender around, but he has offered consistency for years.

Football: Ghana President forces Asamoah Gyan out of 24-hour retirement for Africa Cup of Nations

(THE GUARDIAN) - Asamoah Gyan has made a rapid U-turn on his decision to retire from Ghana duty and will now play at the Africa Cup of Nations, after being told by the nation's President that it is "in the national interest" that he reconsiders.
"A presidential request is one that cannot be disregarded," said the former Sunderland striker in a statement. "I have taken the request of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in good faith and will make myself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah to help win the Afcon trophy."
Gyan turned his back on the team only 24 hours earlier after reportedly being dropped as captain but Mr Akufo-Addo was concerned that Gyan's decision had caused such uproar among the Ghanaian public that he personally contacted the striker and used his influence to change his mind.
"President Akufo-Addo spoke on the telephone with Asamoah Gyan, and informed him of the considerable national disquiet over his decision to retire from the Black Stars," the spokesman for the president, Eugene Arhin, said in a statement.
"The President urged him, in the national interest, to rescind his decision to retire from the Black Stars, and make himself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah."
Having said on Tuesday (May 21) he was retiring to avoid fuelling "the purported undermining the country has seen under my captaincy", Gyan's love for the national team appears to have been rekindled after Akufo-Addo's telephone call.
"My desire to help Ghana end the over three-decade long wait to annex the Afcon trophy still burns strong, and I remain committed to serving this great nation and the people of Ghana," said the 33-year-old.
Gyan, who played in three World Cups, is Ghana's record scorer with 51 goals in 106 appearances and currently plays for Kayserispor in Turkey. It is unclear whether he will still have the captaincy at the Africa Cup of Nations or, as was widely reported in Ghana, it will be handed to André Ayew.

Football: Apologetic Spurs boss Pochettino accepts FA improper conduct charge

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino humbly chastised himself for unacceptable behaviour towards referee Mike Dean and accepted the misconduct charge levelled at him by the Football Association (FA) on Tuesday (Feb 26).
The 46-year-old Argentinian said that having watched replays of his heated exchange with Dean following the 2-1 defeat by Burnley on Saturday - highly damaging to his side's title hopes - he could offer no defence.
"Watching my behaviour afterwards on video, I need to accept the charge from the FA," said Pochettino, who is usually one of the calmer managers prowling the touchline.
"I need to apologise to Mike Dean, I cannot behave in that way. It is not the way to behave and I am going to accept the charge.
"My behaviour was public and now I want to apologise in a public way. I need to apologise to him and all of the officials."
He would not reveal what Dean had said to him during their confrontation following the defeat.
That left third-placed Spurs on 60 points, five points behind Manchester City and six adrift of leaders Liverpool.

All three sides have played 27 games - Spurs are away at a crisis-ridden Chelsea on Wednesday, while City host West Ham and Liverpool are at home to an in-form Watford side.
"No, all that happened on the pitch stays on there," Pochettino said.
"I think that is the most important, we need to accept that we are with our emotion.
"For me it's not important, I don't take it personally.
"When your heart rate is so high you need to be careful how you take words. All that happened on the pitch, I'll never translate off it."

On-loan Denis Suarez will be an asset to Arsenal: Unai Emery

On-loan Denis Suarez will be an asset to Arsenal: Unai Emery

LONDON • Pundits and experts alike had predicted a quiet January transfer window and so it proved on deadline day yesterday, with Premier League clubs prioritising loan deals, often with an option to buy in the summer, rather than permanent signings.
Arsenal announced the signing of Spain midfielder Denis Suarez on loan from Barcelona for the rest of the term, with a view to purchase for £20 million (S$35.3 million) in the close season.
The 25-year-old will link up again with Unai Emery, whom he worked with during a loan spell at Sevilla in 2014-15.
The Gunners boss said on the club website: "He is a player we know well and he brings us quality and options in many different attacking positions."
Suarez, who could make his debut on Sunday at his former club Manchester City, barely featured for the Spanish champions this season, with only two LaLiga appearances off the bench.
But he said he had come to the Emirates to play as much as possible and try to help the team qualify for the Champions League.
Endearing himself to the home faithful by claiming he would "like to win the Europa League with Arsenal", he said: "(They) were a team that really inspired me. I used to watch (Dennis) Bergkamp and (Thierry) Henry. They're both legends of the club and, hopefully, we can follow in their footsteps."
Manchester United also strengthened their squad - by securing the long-term future of a key player.
They announced a new deal for Anthony Martial, whose contract situation had been uncertain earlier in the season, which will keep him at the club until 2024.
It is thought the France forward would have left had Jose Mourinho still been in charge, but his sacking and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment as caretaker boss prompted the turnaround.
Solskjaer was also pleased that the 23-year-old, who has eight goals in 18 league games, had committed his best years to United, hailing him as "one of those naturally gifted players that any coach would love to work with".
There was, however, an imminent exit at Old Trafford, with Marouane Fellaini agreeing a £10.4 million move to Chinese Super League outfit Shandong Luneng. Yesterday, the Belgium midfielder posted a picture of himself at the airport preparing to jet off to China on Instagram. According to the Daily Mail, the 31-year-old will earn £235,000 a week.
At press time, the biggest surprise of the window appeared to be Newcastle owner Mike Ashley finally dipping into his pockets to appease their long-suffering fans.
The Magpies broke their transfer record, which had stood for 14 years when they landed Michael Owen for £16.8 million in 2005, with the capture of Miguel Almiron from Major League Soccer side Atlanta for £21 million.
Rafael Benitez had been tracking the Paraguay midfielder, who is widely considered one of the best talents in the MLS, for a year and was delighted to have finally secured the 24-year-old's services.
The manager told the club website: "His impact in MLS has been really good. He's been one of the best players this year and, hopefully, he can give us more competition and more quality in the final third."

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain's Brazilian captain Thiago Silva has been granted French citizenship, he announced on Twitter on Friday (March 15). The 34-year-old's decision means PSG have an extra space in their squad for a non-EU player. Silva has played 274 games since joining the reigning Ligue 1 champions in 2012 and has 77 caps for Brazil.

Football: Bilbao's Williams strikes twice as Sevilla's hopes fade

(REUTERS) - Sevilla's hopes of staying in the La Liga title race faded further with a 2-0 defeat on Sunday (Jan 13) at struggling Athletic Bilbao, who boosted their chances of survival with two wonderful goals from Inaki Williams.
The striker, making his 100th consecutive appearance in La Liga, ended a goal drought of more than two years at his club's San Mames stadium in spectacular style with brilliant goals in each half.
The defeat left Sevilla third in the standings on 33 points, seven behind leaders Barcelona who could stretch their advantage over the Andalusians to 10 if they beat Eibar later on Sunday.
Athletic meanwhile climbed up to 16th on 22 points, moving three away from the relegation zone.
Williams gave them the lead midway through the first half, cutting in from the left wing to find the far top corner with a scorching strike - his first goal at home since netting against Eibar in December 2016.
Sevilla had beaten Athletic 3-1 at San Mames three days previously in a Copa del Rey last-16 game but for most of the game were outmuscled by Gaizka Garitano's side, who are fighting against a potential first-ever relegation from the top flight.
Dutch midfielder Quincy Promes came closest to scoring for the visitors with a long strange strike which brushed past the far post, while Argentine playmaker Ever Banega saw a shot squirm just wide from the edge of the area.
But Williams, who also scored the winner at Celta Vigo last week, sealed the victory with another impressive effort in the 82nd minute, knocking the ball beyond a defender and then dribbling around the goalkeeper before tapping in.

Klopp set to renew rivalry

Klopp set to renew rivalry

LONDON • Jurgen Klopp had nine wins, three draws and 10 losses as Borussia Dortmund manager while battling Bayern Munich for supremacy in Germany until 2015.
The six-time defending Bundesliga champions were happy to see the back of the man who denied them two titles from 2010-12 when he left for Liverpool. Klopp and Bayern will renew their rivalry, for the first time since leaving his homeland, in the last 16 of the Champions League after the teams were drawn against each other yesterday.
The Reds are the current form side and sit atop the Premier League, while Bayern, under new coach Niko Kovac, have fallen short of their own high standards in the Bundesliga, nine points off table-toppers Dortmund in third.
But Klopp knows that anything can happen between now and the first leg at home on Feb 12 and, given Bayern's pedigree as fellow five-time winners, there can be no writing off what he called "a top side".
He said yesterday: "Difficult. Good draw. It was clear it would be difficult. For me, it's nice, going to Germany. But it's just the draw.
"So we have now time to prepare the game, a lot of time obviously and, hopefully, we have all our (injured) players available then. It will be a tough one, an interesting one, and I am looking forward to it."
The German claimed his history with Bayern would not make a "big, massive difference" as circumstances have changed since their last meeting in a friendly last year.

"This is a different Bayern than what I played, we are already here for three years and since the Audi Cup (last year). We all know the stadium, the atmosphere will be great," he added. "We obviously know more about German football than any league, that's true but, in the end, the boys have to decide it on the pitch. Let's give it a try."
The 51-year-old also felt the pairing was the pick of the knockout stage as it "100 per cent" represented a clash between "two of the world's biggest clubs".
Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic was equally enthused about the draw, insisting the visit to Anfield would be "something to look forward to as a player".
He said of the Reds: "A tough cookie. That's the team of the hour, the league leaders in England, they are playing really good football, very physical, really stepping it up. We are looking forward to it."
If a beleaguered Jose Mourinho and his Manchester United were hoping for respite from their league travails in Europe, they failed to find it after landing French champions Paris Saint-Germain for the first time in a competitive fixture in the other glamour tie of the round.
The Red Devils face a formidable task against a side featuring Neymar and Kylian Mbappe - the world's two most expensive footballers - but PSG boss Thomas Tuchel refused to be lulled into a false sense of security surrounding the opposition's poor domestic form this season.

"It's always difficult to play Manchester United," said the German.
"They have lots of experience in this competition, they've won it numerous times. It's always difficult to play at Old Trafford, a big challenge. It's the same thing against Mourinho, you must have respect."
In other notable ties, three-time defending champions Real Madrid were pitted against Ajax, Manchester City against Schalke and Atletico Madrid against Juventus.

Football: Leicester City manager Rodgers recounts 'horrendous' ordeal for family after break-in

LONDON (AFP) - Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers spoke on Thursday (March 7) of his family's "horrendous" ordeal after their home in Scotland was broken into while they were sleeping.
Police were called to the property near Glasgow in the early hours of Wednesday.
His wife and stepdaughter, Charlotte and Lola, were in the house and a number of items were stolen but nobody was injured.
Rodgers, 46, left Parkhead last week to take over at former Premier League champoins Leicester, sparking anger among some Celtic fans.
"For the girls to have someone come into the room, it's horrendous really," Rodgers said at his pre-match press conference.
"I just made sure they are secure up there. We are looking to buy a house here in Leicester and they will move down very soon.
"When I got the call in the early hours of the morning you're worried about their safety. The reaction from lots of people has been great. We've been given great support.

"It's not nice for any family to go through. It gave the girls a fright. The last 10 days there's been a lot around my move to here but I don't want it to detract from an amazing time we had as a family in Scotland."
Police in Scotland confirmed an investigation was under way, with Rodgers losing several of his medals.
"Yeah, I'll have to try to get some more," he said.
Rodgers is preparing for his first home game in charge against struggling Fulham on Saturday.
He suffered a last-minute defeat in Sunday's 2-1 loss at Watford in his first game at the helm.
Rodgers added: "All games are very difficult to forecast. People will look at chunks of five games and think 'right, you can get points here' but you never know what the other team is going to bring to the game.
"Scott (Parker) has come in and Fulham had a good performance last week, so he will want to continue with that this weekend."

Football: Liverpool seek new 'heroes' without concussed Salah against Barcelona

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool must turn to unlikely heroes to overturn a 3-0 Champions League semi-final, first leg deficit against Barcelona on Tuesday (May 7) according to defender Trent Alexander-Arnold after top scorer Mohamed Salah was ruled out with concussion.
Roberto Firmino will also be absent against the Spanish champions leaving Jurgen Klopp without two of his most potent weapons for an already massive challenge.
"Obviously we've got two of our main goalscorers out, but it also presents an opportunity for some of the other lads to come in, make a name for themselves and make themselves heroes," said Alexander-Arnold.
"If we do overturn the deficit tomorrow then whoever scores, their name will always be remembered because I am sure it will be one of those really special nights."
Salah was stretchered off during Liverpool's tense 3-2 win at Newcastle on Saturday that kept alive their chances of a first Premier League title in 29 years after colliding with Magpies' goalkeeper Martin Dubravka for a high ball.
"It's a concussion so that means he would not even be allowed to play," said Klopp at his pre-match press conference on Monday.
"He feels OK but it is not good enough from a medical point of view that is all. He's desperate (to play) but we cannot do it."
Klopp was realistic at his side's chances of progressing to a second consecutive Champions League final, but refused to give up hope with Liverpool's history of European comebacks.
"Together with our supporters it was a long season and there is at least a little chance to make it even longer," added Klopp.
"Two of the world's best strikers are not available tomorrow night and we have to score four goals against Barcelona to go through after 90 minutes.
"It doesn't make life easier, but as long as we have 11 players on the pitch, we will try it." - Anfield an extra man - Luis Suarez scored the opening goal against his former club in last week's first leg at the Camp Nou, but ahead of his return to Anfield, the Uruguayan warned his current teammates of the lift playing on home soil will give Liverpool.
"To play at Anfield is like playing with an extra man for what the fans transmit to the Liverpool players," said Suarez.
And Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde believes attack will be the best form of defence as if the Catalans get an away goal, Liverpool will need to score five.
"What we have to do is score," said Valverde.
Suarez will be joined by Lionel Messi and Philippe Coutinho on his return to Anfield after a £142 million (S$254 million) move to Barca from Liverpool last year.
But Ousmane Dembele is absent for the visitors due to a hamstring injury and Valverde believes the Frenchman's absence will be felt just as much as Salah and Firmino.
"We don't want any player to be injured. It would have been extraordinary to see them all on the field. They are all important," he added.
"Dembele's absence is a problem. Against a team that concedes space (in behind) it is always important to have player like Ousmane."
