Football: Solskjaer has made Man United 'very dangerous', says Arsenal's Emery

LONDON (AFP) - Arsenal manager Unai Emery says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made Manchester United a much more dangerous team since taking over from Jose Mourinho.
Emery's side host United in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday and the Spaniard expects a stern test from Solskjaer's revitalised team.
Arsenal drew 2-2 with United at Old Trafford in the Premier League last month, shortly before Mourinho was sacked as manager after a wretched run of results.
Since then, Solskjaer, hired from Molde as interim boss, has overseen seven successive wins in all competitions.
Solskjaer's approach has won over a United squad that grew tired of Mourinho's spikey personality, and Emery is suitably impressed.
"It's a different team. It's the same players but they're playing with a big performance now," Emery told reporters on Wednesday (Jan 23).
"I was watching their last matches and each player has a lot of confidence, with big performances, and now they are very dangerous.
"For us, it's good because it's a very big test for us in this competition."
Arsenal's preparation for the United clash included a team-building paintball trip, but it has been a difficult few days for the club.
It was announced on Monday that head of recruitment Sven Mislintat will leave next month having only been at Arsenal for a little over a year.
A day later, Gunners right-back Hector Bellerin learned he could miss up to nine months after suffering ruptured knee ligaments in the 2-0 win over Chelsea on Saturday.
Emery was asked about both issues and believes Arsenal should take their time in appointing a successor to Mislintat, with Roma's director of football Monchi linked to a similar role in north London.
Asked if it was important to swiftly find a replacement for Mislintat, Emery replied: "Maybe if you do this recruitment very quickly, maybe you can make a mistake.
"I think it's better to do without that, being calm and also finding the best possible person to do this job like we want.
"I think the club is working on that. It's not my issue. I can say the same: if the club decided to sign one sporting director, then I will agree with them."
Bellerin will undergo surgery and could miss the start of next season given the severity of the damage to his knee.
"We were sad and we are sad now after his injury," Emery added.
"I think this year is very difficult for big injuries like Hector, Rob Holding and (Danny) Welbeck. But football is like that.
"We need to treat these injuries like a normality in football, but we are very sad for that."

Football: Paul Pogba is Manchester United captaincy material, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Paul Pogba has the qualities to be captain of Manchester United, according to caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has overseen a dramatic return to form for the World Cup winner.
The France midfielder was told in September by then-manager Jose Mourinho that he would never captain the club again, days after an apparent disagreement over tactics.
Mourinho denied at the time that there had been any fallout between the pair, having taken the decision to strip Pogba of his role as United vice-captain.
The decision was made public days after Pogba appeared to question Mourinho's approach by telling reporters that United should "attack, attack, attack".
Pogba, who performed erratically for his club over the first half of the season, has scored five goals in six appearances since Solskjaer arrived as interim boss on December 19.
The Frenchman made his debut for United's reserve team when Solskjaer was their manager during the 25-year-old's first spell at the club.
The Norwegian said that he has long believed Pogba has what it takes to lead a team, although made clear that he is happy with United's current set-up, with Ashley Young the regular captain on the pitch while Antonio Valencia, who has made just eight appearances this season, is the club captain.

"I know the boy from before, and he's a leader," Solskjaer said ahead of his team's FA Cup fourth-round match against Arsenal on Friday (Jan 25).
"He's a character who influences people. He cares and wants to be successful.
"He knows he can't do it by himself. It's a team game and he's a character who brings so many good things with him when he's enjoying himself, I have to say.
"You see the personality. He loves playing football. He's a larger-than-life character. That's just the way he is.
"When the performances come as well, that marries together as a good leader and you see what it meant to him winning the World Cup. So for me, yes, he's captain material."
Pogba has faced criticism in the past for his enthusiastic use of social media, not least when a post appeared on his Instagram account after Mourinho's December sacking with a picture of himself smiling and the words "caption this".
Former United players Gary Neville and Nicky Butt both criticised the post, which was quickly deleted.
Solskjaer, though, says he is not worried about the way that players such as Pogba and teammate Jesse Lingard use social media.
"It's part of the era we live in," he said. "That's just society now, that's what they're used to, the kids now. I'm not, but they are.
"And it's all positive, it's all good messages and I don't have any problem with that whatsoever because that's Paul, that's Jesse. We've got certain rules obviously, and it's common sense."
Solskjaer said that there were no immediate plans to give Pogba the captain's armband, adding that he felt the role could sometimes be given too much significance.
"Ashley's wearing the armband, yes because Antonio's struggled with fitness as well, in and out," said Solskjaer.
"Antonio's still the club captain, but Ash is wearing the armband when he's playing. I've never been a fan of 'You're this and you're that'."

Football: Menotti named Argentina's director of national teams

BUENOS AIRES (REUTERS) - Argentina have appointed 80-year-old former coach Cesar Luis Menotti as director of national teams, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) said on Monday (Jan 14).
Menotti, who led Argentina to their first World Cup title in 1978, will be charged with overseeing the 10-year plan unveiled last November to finding a "footballing identity" for the two-times World Cup winners.
"Menotti will begin the job on Feb 1," the AFA said of the former Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Mexico coach. "In the coming days he will meet with the backroom staff of the men's team to start work on future organisational issues."
Argentina have not won a major international title since 1993, when they lifted the Copa America, and were dumped out of last year's World Cup finals in the round of 16.
Lionel Scaloni took over as interim coach after the tournament in Russia and recently had his contract extended until this summer's Copa America in Brazil.
The team's biggest star Lionel Messi is on a self-imposed sabbatical from international duty after scoring only one goal at the World Cup.

Pogba set to torment Gunners once again

Pogba set to torment Gunners once again

Manchester United may have won in Paris without their most famous Parisian, but capital occasions seem to bring the best out of their most expensive player.
They have a 100 per cent record in London in 2019. Paul Pogba has three goals and three assists in what seems like United's second home.
Their most famous player returns after suspension and a famous result, ready to take his place in the makeshift midfield of rookies and a supposed misfit, in Fred.
Yet the same may have been said of Pogba three months ago. Confined to a bit-part role at the end of Jose Mourinho's reign, he is now an indictment of the sacked Portuguese.
Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he has looked a World Cup winner and an £89 million (S$156 million) player. He has been ubiquitous, shedding his status as an enigma to deliver consistency and productivity.
Even while missing a penalty and picking up a red card, he has scored nine times and registered seven assists. Pogba has provided 16 goals in 15 games.
More, really. When United won at the Emirates Stadium in the FA Cup in January, Anthony Martial completed the scoring when Petr Cech had parried Pogba's shot.
The Frenchman had intercepted in his own half and powered forward: it showcased the verticality and directness that suits Pogba, but also the counter-attacking game plan United's last two managers have used in 3-1 wins at Arsenal.
They have had wildly different endings for Pogba. The 25-year-old also set up United's third goal, scored by Jesse Lingard, during an influential display in 2017 but was then sent off for a studs-up challenge on Hector Bellerin.
He has hugged the spotlight in home games against the Gunners, too: last season, he opened the scoring in Arsene Wenger's final encounter with United.
In November, a 15-minute cameo in a 2-2 draw proved his final league appearance under Mourinho; he was sent on for Marouane Fellaini and left unused in the Portuguese's final two domestic fixtures.
"I was in the shadows," Pogba said in January. His relationship with Mourinho broke down.
In contrast, Solskjaer has embraced his exuberance and encouraged a larger-than-life character.
In August, when few thought he could become United manager, Solskjaer had said he would build a team around Pogba. Given the opportunity, he has been true to his word.
He has given him defensive cover, finding his best role either in a trio or on the left of a diamond, but allowed him to surge forward.
He has been allowed to try the audacious. He is having more shots - 48 during Solskjaer's reign - but has actually showed positional discipline and greater productivity while looking liberated.
The unlikely lads showed in Paris that Pogba certainly isn't a one-man midfield, but a talisman still feels much more than just one man.

Football: Liverpool held at Everton to surrender top spot in Premier League

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool were left to regret two huge missed chances by Mohamed Salah as Everton held out for a 0-0 draw in the Merseyside derby on Sunday (March 3).
Jurgen Klopp’s men now trail champions Manchester City by a point at the top of the Premier League with nine games remaining.  Salah was denied by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and a last-ditch challenge by Michael Keane either side of half-time as Liverpool dropped points for the fourth time in six league games.
Fabinho was also guilty of wasting a big opportunity 21 minutes from time as Lucas Digne cleared when the Brazilian took an age to control Virgil van Dijk’s knockdown.
Everton remain without a win in the Merseyside derby stretching back to 2010, but may have done enough to stop their local rivals from winning the title for the first time in 29 years.
Salah has now scored just once in his past six matches and wasted by a distance the best chance for either side from the sort of situation he finished with ease in a 44-goal debut season at Anfield last year.
Pickford was at fault for Liverpool’s 96th minute winner when the sides last met in December, but the England number one went some way to making amends by standing tall to block as Salah bore down on goal before Seamus Coleman threw himself in the way of a follow-up attempt from Jordan Henderson.
That was a rare glimpse of goal in a first-half which generated plenty of excitement and atmosphere but little in the way of goalmouth incident.

Everton have endured a disappointing season after spending big in the summer to back Marco Silva and their lack of quality on the ball showed despite their commitment and desire to close Liverpool down.  The hosts at least opened the second-half with slightly more urgency, Dominic Calvert-Lewin rising to meet an early Lucas Digne corner, with a header that was saved comfortably by Alisson Becker.
At the other end, Salah spurned another chance when the ball broke his way off Kurt Zouma, but the Egyptian took a heavy touch and allowed Keane to make a stunning recovery tackle.  Klopp had seen enough by just after the hour mark and brought on James Milner and Roberto Firmino, recovered from his recent ankle injury, in a bid to turn one point into three.
The Brazilian almost made an instant impact, marauding forward with Salah, but his cross proved a little long for Sadio Mane who could only head back across goal harmlessly.  V
an Dijk was again peerless in his defensive duties and nearly set up the winner had Fabinho been sharper to fire home the Dutchman’s knock down.  Roared on by an increasingly vocal home crowd, Everton also created some late chances with a cross from substitute Richarlison coming within inches of finding the sliding Bernard.
However, for the third time in Liverpool’s last four matches the game ended scoreless to hand City the initiative in the title race.Â

Football: Fulham player Ben Davis defaults on national service commitments

Football: Fulham player Ben Davis defaults on national service commitments

SINGAPORE - Footballer Ben Davis has defaulted on his national service commitments, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said in a statement on Monday (Feb 18).
In response to queries from The Straits Times, Mindef said: "Mr Benjamin Davis is a NS defaulter. He failed to report for NS as required. He is also staying overseas without a valid exit permit.
"Mr Davis has committed offences under the Enlistment Act, and is liable upon conviction to a fine of up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 3 years."
ST understands that Davis was required to enlist on Feb 14.
The Phuket-born 18-year-old had signed professional terms with English Premier League club Fulham in July last year, the first Singaporean footballer to do so with a top-tier English club.
A former student at the Singapore Sports School, he left the Republic in 2015 to move to London to join Fulham's academy, where he is registered as an English national.
However, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), which had supported Davis’ application for deferment, expressed its dismay at the news and issued a strongly worded admonition of the player, whom it capped at the Under-19 level. Davis was also called up to the senior national team last year but was not fielded.

A spokesman said: “The FAS is extremely disappointed with Mr Benjamin Davis’ default of his NS obligations. It is thoroughly irresponsible on the part of Mr Davis, and also reneges on his (and his father’s) assurance to the FAS that Mr Davis would discharge his NS commitments and play for the Singapore national team.

“Mr Davis had lived in Singapore for many years, and has benefited from the resources used to educate and train him as a footballer over this period of time. He was invited to play for the Singapore national team, and he agreed.
“The FAS had supported Benjamin Davis’ application to defer NS on this basis.
“While the matter will now be dealt with by Mindef, the FAS wishes to state categorically that we do not condone such conduct nor did it ever arise in our discussions with Mr Davis that he would seek to avoid his liability.”
Davis was born in Thailand to an English father and Thai mother.
After he signed pro terms last year, Mindef confirmed that his application for NS deferment had been rejected as he did not “meet the criteria for long-term deferment from full-time NS”.
The decision sparked a debate among the sporting fraternity and the general public about issues such as maximising sporting talent and the need to maintain Singapore’s security.
A month later in Parliament, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen laid out the reasons for the rejection, highlighting that “there was no commitment to serve Singapore and our national interests” despite Harvey Davis’ contention that if Ben were to become the first Singaporean to play in the EPL, it would “make Singapore proud”.
Dr Ng reiterated that “deferment... cannot be for that individual, no matter how talented, to pursue his own interests or career, even if it vicariously brings credit or fame to Singapore”.
He also noted that Harvey Davis had “consistently refused” to pin down a date when Ben would return to serve NS.
Mindef has also noted that there are programmes in place to help national athletes continue training while serving their NS.
“Many talented sportsmen, including footballers, have completed their NS dutifully first before pursuing their professional careers. Mindef has in place schemes during full-time NS to enable them to continue training to retain and improve their skills,” it said last July.
“We also provide additional training opportunities in the lead-up to major Games such as the South-east Asian and Olympic Games where our sportsmen represent Singapore and do us proud.”
In the last 15 years, only three athletes – swimmers Joseph Schooling and Quah Zheng Wen, and sailor Maximillian Soh – have been granted deferment. Schooling and Quah have represented the Republic at various Olympics, with the former making history by winning a gold medal in the 100m butterfly at the 2016 Rio Games.
While Davis had a strong start in his first season with the Fulham U-18 team - he scored once in 10 games, making 13 tackles and 16 interceptions while racking up a pass accuracy of 90 per cent - ST understands he has found the going tougher in his sophomore season.
A source, who did not want to be named, said that Davis' performance was adversely affected after news emerged that his application for NS deferment had been rejected.
While he started 12 of Fulham U-18s’ first 14 matches of the season, he has played only 136 out of a possible 630 minutes in their last seven games. He also earned the call-up to the Under-21 team for four games, but was an unused substitute on each of those occasions.
Based on a sentencing framework introduced by the High Court in July 2017, there are four bands of sentencing based on the length of the period of default:
- For those who evade NS for two to six years, the starting point is two to four months' jail
- For seven to 10 years, the starting point is five to eight months' jail
- For 11 to 16 years, the starting point is 14 to 22 months' jail
- For 17 to 23 years or more, the starting point is two to three years' jail.
NS defaulters who are still under the age of 40 are still required to serve if they return.
A defaulter’s sentence may be discounted based on various factors, such as the length of period of default, how substantial his connection to Singapore is, whether he voluntarily surrendered or was arrested, and whether he pleaded guilty or claimed trial.

Correction note: This article has been updated to reflect the four-band sentencing based on the length of the period of NS default.

Guardiola aware of threat posed by 'incredible' Vardy

Guardiola aware of threat posed by 'incredible' Vardy
LONDON • Pep Guardiola will become the first manager in 10 years to retain the Premier League title if City win their final two games, but an old nemesis, Leicester's Jamie Vardy, stands in his way today.
He remains the only player to have scored a hat-trick against a Guardiola-managed side in a 4-2 humiliation of City at the King Power Stadium in December 2016.
Since the 2011-12 campaign, only City striker Sergio Aguero has scored more goals against "Big Six" sides (44) than Vardy (34), who is in red-hot form with 11 strikes in 11 games. He has 18 league goals and is fifth in a chart topped by Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (22).
With Vardy leading the line, even though the game will be played at City's Etihad stomping ground, Guardiola has every reason to be wary of "an incredible striker with his movement, finishing, fighting".
He highlighted the former England striker's raw pace as a danger, saying: "His career speaks for itself, not just the last few games, but (lately) he's scored every single game. He's done incredible in this league."
He has also been impressed by his opposite number Brendan Rodgers' influence since replacing Claude Puel in February.
He said: "Before, they were a counter-attack team but, now with Rodgers, they have another way to play and they can use that and control all parts of the game.
"In two months, his team are already playing the way he wants to play. Of course with incredible quality, with so fast players, honestly I've been really impressed.
"The players know it's an incredible task for us, it's already a final for us. Hopefully, the people can help us and we can do what we have to do and win the game."
He also warned his players that the Foxes would be on the prowl for a scalp, insisting he "cannot imagine the Leicester players will come here for their holidays".
The Spaniard added: "They have a chance to finish seventh, too. They will try to make a good game.
"Brendan and Rafa (Benitez) were in Liverpool, but they want to win. I cannot imagine being at former clubs and not wanting to win.
"They want to win so I don't have doubts about that. All players and managers when they are there want to do a good performance."

Football: Oxlade-Chamberlain named in Liverpool's Champions League squad

LIVERPOOL, England (REUTERS) - Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been included in Liverpool's squad for the knockout stages of the Champions League as he looks to make a comeback after being sidelined by a knee injury for over nine months.
The 25-year-old underwent surgery after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in the semi-final against AS Roma last season, and the England international missed the World Cup in Russia as a result.
Although there were fears that he would miss the entire 2018-19 campaign, Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp confirmed in December that he was ahead of schedule in his recovery and would play a role in the second half of the season.

Football: Saudi Arabia pay price for profligacy as Japan reach quarter-finals for eighth consecutive Asian Cup

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (Reuters) - A first-half goal from Takehiro Tomiyasu was enough to send Japan into the Asian Cup quarter-finals for the eighth consecutive tournament after a 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia at the Sharjah Stadium on Monday (Jan 21).
The Saudis, looking to end a 23-year drought since their third continental title, paid the price for failing to convert their chances as four-time champions Samurai Blue progressed to face Vietnam on Thursday.
Japan went in front in the 20th minute when defender Tomiyasu rose above a Saudi defender in the centre of the box to head a corner into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.
Saudi Arabia dictated play in both halves, but were simply unable to finish in front of goal as the Japanese defenders put in a solid shift.
Midfielder Salem Aldawsari had a golden opportunity to put the Green Falcons level in the 62nd minute but sprayed the ball over the bar with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box.
Moments later, defender Ali Hadi Albulayhi guided the ball well over the bar with a free header after an inviting Aldawsari cross into the penalty area.
Japan, who claimed their last title in 2011, had won all three of their group-stage matches to finish top of their group, while Saudi Arabia finished second in theirs with wins over North Korea and Lebanon.

BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Crystal Palace moved further away from the Premier League relegation zone with a 3-1 win at fellow strugglers Burnley on Saturday (March 2) thanks to second half goals from Michy Batshuayi and Wilfried Zaha.
Palace took the lead in the 15th minute when Jeffrey Schlupp's pull-back struck Burnley defender Phil Bardsley and ricocheted into his own goal.
Burnley dominated the rest of the opening half with Chris Wood forcing a fine reflex save out of Wayne Hennessey with a fierce shot and the Clarets peppering the Palace box with crosses from deep.
But three minutes after the re-start, Palace struck again when full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka's pass was blasted home, first-time, by Batshuayi.
Ashley Barnes then missed a good chance to pull a goal back for the home side, putting the ball over from two metres out, as Burnley continued to press.
The game followed a similar pattern to the first half with Burnley on top but lacking an edge in the final third.
Palace, as often on the road, were a constant threat on the counter-attack and should have had a third when a mistake from Ben Mee put Batshuayi through but he pushed the ball too far when trying to round Burnley keeper Tom Heaton.
The game was wrapped up in outstanding fashion by Zaha who tormented the Burnley defence, twisting inside and out, before firing a low shot past Heaton.
A Barnes header gave Burnley a late consolation goal and although subtitute Peter Crouch went close to a second, Palace's lead was never in real danger.
The South London side are now eight points above the relegation zone and manager Roy Hodgson was well pleased with the showing.
"That was a very satisfying performance, it's never easy to win at Burnley. They are in good form and we knew the type of problems they would pose and did post but we dealt with them extremely well," said the former England manager.
Burnley manager Sean Dyche said his side's failure to deliver quality in crucial moments was the key factor.
"It's confusing when you look at the stats - the stats make it look like a good performance - but we know stats don't win games," he said.
Burnley are in 16th place, five points above Cardiff City who occupy the highest spot in the relegation zone.

Ole's 'reality check' as United see the gap

Ole's 'reality check' as United see the gap

LONDON • For around 20 minutes at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, it felt like the Champions League glory days were back for Manchester United.
The capacity 74,000 crowd was in full voice, United were attacking Paris Saint-Germain down the flanks with speed and aggression and their opponents looked shaky.
That feeling lasted until the French champions began to get a grip on the game and, by the end of the night, a 2-0 win for PSG in the last-16, first-leg clash served only to highlight the gulf that remains between this United team and the European elite.
"It's a reality check, you can see the strength they have," United's caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after they lost to two quickfire second-half goals from Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe.
"They had the momentum after the first goal and controlled the game. You could see we hadn't played at this level for a while and we will have to learn.
"That's the level we want to get to. We've been talking about top four (Premier League), but we also want to be at the top (in Europe)."
The Norwegian has finally tasted his first defeat since taking over 12 games ago in December.
But while United were outclassed technically and outwitted tactically, it could also be said that they were not helped by referee Daniele Orsato, who arguably should have sent off Kimpembe for a second bookable offence before his goal.
Instead, United midfielder Paul Pogba saw red in the 89th minute after receiving a contentious second yellow card, in a match which Orsato dished out 10 yellows in total.
United also lost forwards Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard to muscle injuries and replacements Alexis Sanchez and Juan Mata failed to step up.
In the absence of Martial and Lingard, United had little pace and dynamism and lost the high press they used so successfully early on.
PSG had to cope without the injured Neymar and Edinson Cavani, yet remained a threat throughout.
That is the kind of strength in depth United will need to build if they are to return to being the kind of force in Europe that they were under former boss Alex Ferguson.
PSG's quality was in full display and coach Thomas Tuchel also had his tactics spot on.
The defeat is United's first by a margin of more than a goal at home in European competition.
Solskjaer insisted, however, that the loss will not wreck the momentum United have built up in the Premier League and their confidence ahead of the FA Cup fifth-round tie against Chelsea on Monday.
"No, not at all because at this club we have to bounce back. The Champions League is always going to be difficult, but our bread and butter is the (domestic) league so (I'm) not afraid of that," he said.
"When we go to Paris, we'll give it a go. It is a difficult mountain to climb, but not impossible. Mountains are there to be climbed."
Only once since the 2010-11 season have United won a Champions League knockout game and, with Pogba suspended, the odds are stacked against that changing in the French capital on March 6.

Football: Angela Merkel's aide 'sad' about Ozil's wedding invite to Turkish President Erdogan

BERLIN (AFP) - Angela Merkel's chief of staff on Monday (March 18) joined the growing chorus of criticism of Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil for reportedly inviting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to his wedding this summer as his witness.
The 30-year-old Ozil, who has Turkish family roots, sparked controversy last May when he was photographed with Mr Erdogan, raising questions about the footballer's loyalty to Germany on the eve of their disastrous World Cup campaign.
After 92 appearances for Germany, including a key role in the 2014 World Cup victory, Ozil suddenly quit the national squad last July, accusing German football officials of racism.
On Sunday, Germany's top-selling tabloid Bild reported that Ozil, 30, and his fiancee Amine Gulse, 25, a former Miss Turkey and model, personally presented Mr Erdogan in Istanbul with an invitation to their wedding this summer, asking the Turkish leader to appear as the footballer's witness.
The invitation immediately drew sharp criticism in Germany, whose government has been sharply at odds with Ankara over a range of human rights questions in recent years.
Helge Braun, a politician and chief of staff to German Chancellor Merkel, told Bild it "makes one sad" that Ozil would make a such a move despite having already been sharply criticised by the German public over his first meeting with Mr Erdogan.
"The fact that this has continued will have disappointed a lot of football fans - me too!" said Braun.

The politician accepted Ozil's was "a private decision" which one must respect, but appealed to the footballer as a role model, especially for young Turks in Germany.
"Footballers are symbolic figures in our society, with whom people identify with much more than ministers," added Braun. "And so the question is raised: How much does someone wearing the German national jersey stand for Germany?"
Braun's comments come after German politician Cem Ozdemir, whose parents are Turkish, said on Sunday that he found it "inappropriate" for Ozil to invite the Turkish leader.
Ozil - one of the world's most popular footballers on social media with 31 million followers on his official Facebook account, 19.1 million on his Instagram account and 23.9 million on Twitter - has an obligation as a role model, added Ozdemir.
Another lawmaker, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, was equally unimpressed by his invitation to Mr Erdogan.
"The wedding is the private matter of Mesut Ozil, but he is a world star, who people look up to, so of course it's a pity from a political point of view," Lambsdorff told newspaper Welt.
Ozil has dated Gulse since 2017 and the couple announced their engagement in June 2018.
The Arsenal midfielder, a third-generation German, whipped up a political storm when he was pictured alongside Mr Erdogan last May.
Criticism intensified after the red-faced defending champions crashed out of the first round of the World Cup in Russia.
In the wake of the World Cup fiasco, Ozil announced his resignation from the national squad, saying: "I am German when we win, an immigrant when we lose."

Injuries force Solskjaer to turn to reserves

Injuries force Solskjaer to turn to reserves
LONDON • Manchester United could have up to nine injured first-team players when they travel to Crystal Palace in the Premier League today, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes that his Under-23s can step up in their absences.
Antonio Valencia, Matteo Darmian, Phil Jones, Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial are all on the sidelines, while Marcus Rashford is in doubt after suffering an ankle knock during last Sunday's 0-0 draw with Liverpool.
Speaking at his pre-match conference yesterday, interim manager Solskjaer hinted that Angel Gomes, Tahith Chong and James Garner could play a part today.
"They've been part of our training for a long time now and I'm sure Angel has been successful with England's Under-17s. I'm definitely sure that if he gets a chance, he'll do well," said the Norwegian, who turned 46 yesterday.
"James Garner is a Michael Carrick but 20 years younger, I'm sure he'll do well and Chongy will be taking people on if he comes on.
"They're ready, they're kids. It's hard if you're a defender coming on if you're 16 or 17 but, as an attacker, you go out there and express yourself. They can win you the game, not lose it for you."
United have yet to lose a league game since Solskjaer took over in December.
Palace, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their last six matches in all competitions.
[4-1]He said: "We have to be good on the ball, break them down, but we know on the counter-attack they've got some pace and counter-attacking threat, so we've got to be at our best."[/4-1]
United go into the match in fifth place on 52 points, one behind fourth-placed Arsenal and two ahead of Chelsea, who have a game in hand.
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson, however, believes that the Gunners are "flat-track bullies" and will not finish fourth with just 11 games left.
He said ahead of their game today: "With Bournemouth's injuries, I can only see an Arsenal win. But they've got a bad result in them. They will be caught up in the end."
