Football: Ranieri lined-up as Roma sack Di Francesco after Champions League flop

MILAN (AFP) - Eusebio Di Francesco was sacked as Roma coach after the team crashed out of the Champions League, the Italian club confirmed on Thursday (March 7), with former boss Claudio Ranieri tipped to replace him.
Roma had taken a 2-1 advantage to Porto for the second leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday but fell 4-3 on aggregate after a controversial penalty awarded following a VAR review deep into extra time.
"AS Roma can confirm head coach Eusebio Di Francesco has left the club with immediate effect," the team said in a statement.
"The club would like to thank Eusebio for his work during his time at AS Roma and wish him success in the future."
An urgent meeting had been called on Thursday afternoon in Rome between the club's top officials to discuss Di Francesco's future.
Club president Jim Pallotta later said: "On behalf of myself and everyone at AS Roma, I'd like to thank Eusebio for his work and his commitment.
"Since returning to the club, Eusebio has always acted professionally and put the club's needs ahead of his own. We all wish him well for the future."
Former Sassuolo boss Di Francesco took over in June 2017.

A former Roma midfielder, he had helped the team to their last Serie A title as a player in 2001.
The 49-year-old led Roma to the Champions League semi-finals last season for the first time since 1984, following an epic 3-0 comeback against Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
"Di Francesco will remain the coach who took Roma to the Champions League semi-finals after who knows how many years and he deserves credit for that," said captain Daniele De Rossi.
"I know this isn't our best season and the job of a coach will always be tied to results."
The club finished third last season but this campaign has been marked by struggles with Di Francesco apologising to fans but refusing to resign after a humiliating 7-1 defeat to Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals last month.
Roma are now fifth in Serie A, three points off the Champions League berths for next season, after falling 3-0 last weekend to bitter city rivals Lazio.

RANIERI 'READY'

Ranieri, who memorably guided Leicester City to the 2016 Premier League title before being sacked the following season, coached Roma from September 2009 to February 2011.
The 67-year-old Italian's brief spell as manager of Premier League strugglers Fulham ended last month after only four months in charge.
"Ranieri is ready," wrote Gazzetta Dello Sport, adding that the former Roma boss was expected to travel to the Italian capital from London by Friday at the latest.
Other reported contenders are former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte and his Stamford Bridge successor Maurizio Sarri.
Ranieri has had a long coaching career in Italy with clubs including Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli. He coached French club Nantes before taking over at Fulham in November 2018, only to be sacked on February 28.
During his time in charge of Roma he oversaw 84 matches - winning 47, with 16 draws and 21 defeats.
Di Francesco has coached Roma for 87 games with 46 victories, 18 draws and 23 defeats.
The Champions League exit however was the final straw for American businessman Pallotta who had raged at VAR after the defeat.
The tie hinged on a decision by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir to point to the spot late in extra time upon reviewing an incident in which Alessandro Florenzi hauled back Porto forward Fernando.
Alex Telles converted the spot-kick, and Roma were then denied a penalty at the other end following a review, after Patrik Schick tumbled to the ground.
"Last year we asked for VAR in the Champions League because we got screwed in the semi-final and tonight, they've got VAR and we still get robbed," said Pallotta on Twitter.
"Patrik Schick was clearly clipped in the box, VAR shows it, and nothing is given. I'm tired of this c***. I give up."

VALENCIA â€¢ Across Europe, the scent of revolution is in the air with Germany and Italy undergoing a remodelling process, but perhaps the most intriguing of all is the transformation of Spain.
Luis Enrique, appointed last July after the shambolic sacking of Julen Lopetegui and the brief interregnum of Fernando Hierro, is continuing to put his stamp on the squad.
And, rather than replacing old stagers with young talent, the former Barcelona boss appears to be moving in the opposite direction.
Enrique's squad for their Euro 2020 qualifying opener against Norway today contains three uncapped players - Sevilla defender Sergi Gomez, Real Betis midfielder Sergio Canales, and Getafe forward Jaime Mata.
There is also space for Valencia midfielder Dani Parejo, who has a single cap, while Sevilla's Jesus Navas, who was last capped five years ago, has been recalled as a right-back.
Among those with whom Enrique has lost patience are a group of players hitherto considered the future of the national team.
The Atletico Madrid midfield pair of Koke and Saul Niguez have been dropped together with Real Madrid midfielder Isco, Villarreal midfielder Pablo Fornals and Celta Vigo midfielder Brais Mendez.
Speaking ahead of the Norway meeting at the Mestalla, Enrique revealed that he had to tinker in the wake of their failure to qualify for the Nations League semi-finals, insisting Spain would be "able to defend better" if they "attacked in a more orderly fashion".
If the 48-year-old is hoping to catalyse a resurrection of the national team, who have not made it past the last 16 of a major tournament since winning Euro 2012, then he could not have picked many players who embody that better than Canales.
He was seen as the next big thing in Spanish football when, at 19, his form for Racing Santander earned him a move to Real.
But he lasted only one season at the Bernabeu and, since then, his career has been hobbled by several long-term injuries, including a cruciate ligament rupture - he had the scar from the operation transformed into a fish skeleton tattoo.
However, Canales has flourished under Quique Setien at Betis this season, and he told Marca that despite "moments during the recoveries when things were not going well", quitting football was never on his mind.
The 28-year-old, however, had almost given up hope of playing for La Roja as a senior player.
The attacker added: "I did not have it as a short-term or long-term goal. I did not consider it. I saw the national team as a fan more than anything. Now I want to give 200 per cent, the best of myself, for it."
For now, the unlikely figurehead of Spain's regeneration game is a man with a fish skeleton tattoo. It offers an apt symbol of the desire to replace the scars of past failures with the bones of a new era.

The legendary United manager has acted as Solskjaer's mentor since the Norwegian took the reins in December.

PARIS (AFP) - Moussa Dembele scored and won a penalty as Lyon stunned Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 on Sunday (Feb 3) to end the runaway leaders' hopes of an unbeaten Ligue 1 campaign.
Angel di Maria fired PSG into a seventh-minute lead, but Dembele equalised and Nabil Fekir scored the winner from the spot three minutes after half-time.
"I don't know if the defeat was deserved. In the first half it was deserved, but after half-time, we still dominated," said PSG forward Kylian Mbappe.
The reigning champions remain 10 points clear of second-placed Lille at the top of the table despite the defeat, with two games in hand, while Lyon strengthened their grip on third spot, three points further back.
"We did what we had planned, namely high pressing, quick transitions, and to cause them problems every time we had the ball," said Lyon coach Bruno Genesio. "I don't think they're used to that in Ligue 1."
All eyes will now turn to the Champions League for PSG, with only a French Cup tie at third-tier Villefranche and a home game against Bordeaux to come before the last-16, first-leg clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Feb 12.
The English side's caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and assistant Mike Phelan were both in attendance at the Groupama Stadium on Sunday, just hours after their side's 1-0 Premier League win at Leicester.
The pair would have learnt plenty from watching Lyon regularly slice through the PSG defence against seemingly little resistance, while Mbappe shouldered the majority of the attacking responsibility in the absence of the injured Neymar.
"I'm not worried about the Champions League," insisted Mbappe. "We must take it match by match and wait for the Champions League."
On paper, this looked the toughest test remaining for PSG in their bid to go through the league season unbeaten, having won on just two of their previous 13 Ligue 1 visits to Lyon, losing seven.
But Thomas Tuchel's men almost forged ahead inside the first two minutes, as Kylian Mbappe raced clear only to shoot tamely at Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes.
The away side did not have to wait long to strike, though, as Houssem Aouar carelessly gifted possession to Julian Draxler, who strode forward and teed up Di Maria to slot in his 10th goal of the season.

Lyon largely dominate

But Lyon, on a six-match unbeaten run in the league themselves, quickly improved and twice wasted clear-cut chances to level, as PSG 'keeper Alphonse Areola denied Bertrand Traore from point-blank range before Dembele nodded wide.
Areola had to be alert again, springing to his right to tip away a vicious long-range drive from Nabil Fekir, before producing a wonderful double stop from Traore and Memphis Depay.
However, just seconds after another excellent save to deny Fekir, Areola was totally at fault for Lyon's 33rd-minute equaliser.
The 25-year-old misjudged Leo Dubois' cross, allowing Dembele the simplest of tasks to head into the net.
PSG almost snatched a half-time lead against the run of play, but Lyon centre-back Jason Denayer made an incredible diving header to keep out Draxler's close-range shot.
Lyon, who face Barcelona in the Champions League knockout stage, continued to dominate after the restart, and were awarded a spot-kick when Dembele was brought down by Thiago Silva, with Fekir doing the rest.
That provoked PSG into life, and Lopes made two brilliant saves from Mbappe in the space of just 20 seconds.
Mbappe was PSG's best hope of salvaging their unbeaten record, but he saw Lopes divert away a low drive, before former Celtic striker Dembele wasted a golden opportunity to wrap up the points as he was again foiled by Areola.
But Lyon held on anyhow, ending their opponents' 21-game unbeaten run in the French top flight.

LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will not change his Manchester United coaching staff for next season despite his side's alarming slump in form towards the end of the season.
United won just two of their final 12 games of the season to miss out on Champions League qualification and finish 32 points adrift of Premier League champions Manchester City in sixth.
The nadir came in a 2-0 home defeat to relegated Cardiff on the final day of the season, leaving the futures of many of the United squad open to question this summer.
Solskjaer was only confirmed as United's new manager on a permanent basis just over six weeks ago, but that decision has also been questioned given the Norwegian's lack of coaching experience at the top echelons of the game.
However, Solskjaer will not rejig his coaching staff with Michael Carrick, Kieran McKenna and Mark Dempsey continuing alongside assistant manager Mike Phelan.
"They are all going to stay," Solskjaer told United's official app.
"I think that's important, that we keep that team going forward. We do bounce off each other and they are some excellent coaches."

United's clearout has already begun with former captain Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera leaving the club after their contracts expired.
Spanish midfielder Herrera is expected to join French champions Paris Saint-Germain, but believes Solskjaer's human qualities make him the right man to turn United's fortunes around.
"When you have the players behind you and wanting to fight for you, part of the job is done," said Herrera.
"I believe in karma and if you are a good person, if you are honest and sincere with the players and the fans, sooner or later it will work.
"I think Ole is the right person because he has qualities and knowledge but also he is a great man and a great person."
United have now gone six years without winning the Premier League title since Alex Ferguson retired and Solskjaer admitted it would be "miraculous" for the Red Devils to be challenging Manchester City and Liverpool next season.
But Herrera called for Solskjaer to be given the time needed to get United back on their feet.
"They (the coaches) need time because this is not going to be from the first day. The club will need time, confidence and support," he added "I am sure they will give it but the only thing I ask for them is time because this is not easy.
"(But) the right person is at the wheel. He's the right person."

MADRID (REUTERS) - Real Madrid barged their way back into the Spanish La Liga title race with a 3-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in a feisty derby at the Wanda Metropolitano on Saturday (Feb 9).
Casemiro, Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale's strikes inflicted Atletico's first home defeat of the season across all competitions and moved the European champions up to second, within five points of leaders Barcelona, as their revival under Santiago Solari continued.
Antoine Griezmann equalised for Atletico after Casemiro's overhead kick sent Real ahead, but Ramos slammed home from the penalty spot before halftime to silence the home fans.
Atletico's Alvaro Morata netted a brilliant lob against his former side but it was ruled out for offside before Bale drilled in the visitors' third to secure the points for Real Madrid.
Thomas Partey was dismissed after getting his second yellow card at the end of a disappointing afternoon for Diego Simeone's side, who dropped to third after losing for the second weekend in a row.
"La Liga is there to fight for, there are a lot of points to win and any team can make your life hard," Real captain Ramos said.
"Winning the league motivates us, it's a really balanced competition and we have to keep fighting for it and making life difficult for Barcelona." A vibrant atmosphere at the Wanda Metropolitano also carried an undercurrent of anger as Atletico fans threw stuffed toy rats at Thibaut Courtois's goal.
It was the Belgian goalkeeper's first return to play his former side Atletico since signing for Real Madrid and he endured an uncomfortable afternoon.
Atletico started brightly with Griezmann firing into the side netting but Real moved ahead in the 16th minute when Casemiro scored a spectacular overhead kick after a corner was flicked on to him.
Atletico levelled when Griezmann slotted home coolly through Courtois's legs after Correa played him in, with home fans enduring an agonising wait while VAR verified that the French striker was onside.
The VAR system was referred to again when Jose Gimenez brought down Vinicius Jr. on the edge of the box, with referee Xavier Estrada Fernandez deciding the foul continued into the area.
Ramos smashed home from the spot to send his side back into the lead just before halftime and Bale netted the third to seal an impressive victory for Real and a painful loss for Atletico who had previously conceded just four goals at home.
"We lost today, we must look forward and keep working, there is still a lot of fight for," said Atletico skipper Diego Godin.
"There is a long way to go, we have to do our part and the rest is not in our hands."

AL AIN, United Arab Emirates (REUTERS) - Defending champions Australia crashed out of the Asian Cup on Friday (Jan 25) when a contentious Ali Mabkhout goal earned hosts the United Arab Emirates a 1-0 victory and a semi-final meeting with Qatar next week.
Mabkhout struck midway through the second half after Milos Degenek under-hit a pass back to Mat Ryan, and the Al Jazira man swooped to round the goalkeeper and slot the ball into an empty net for his ninth goal in two Asian Cups.
The Australians complained Degenek had been fouled prior to giving away possession by Mohammed Abdulrahman, but Japanese referee Ryuji Sato waved away the protests and the goal stood.

Eriksen ready for 'something new' away from Spurs
LONDON â€¢ Christian Eriksen yesterday confirmed the worst-kept secret at Tottenham - that he wants to take on a new challenge at another club this summer.
The Denmark midfielder, who has been at Spurs since joining from Ajax in 2013, has one year to run on his current contract and has shown no inclination to renew for another cycle in north London.
Spurs cannot afford to allow him to run down his deal and leave as a free agent next summer, given his high value at arguably the peak of his career and the fact that they have repayments to make on their new stadium.
Consequently, they have let it be known in recent weeks that he would be available at a price, albeit an extremely high one.
Chairman Daniel Levy has quoted Â£130 million (S$225.4 million) for him, which might seem like wishful thinking, but it offers an impression of where he is drawing the lines for negotiations.
While the 27-year-old Eriksen has repeatedly refused to discuss his next move with reporters, he told Danish daily Ekstra Bladet that he was now "at a stage of my career where I would like to try something new".
He said: "I have the deepest respect for everything that is happening at Tottenham and it would not be something negative to stay.
"I hope that something will be decided this summer. That is the plan. In football, you never know when there could be a decision like that. It could be at any point. The best thing is always for it to happen quickly but in football, things take time."
Eriksen has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, who are looking to add marquee signings when the transfer window opens on July 1 after a desperately disappointing season, and he admitted the Spanish giants were a "step up" from Spurs.
He added: "Then it would take Real Madrid picking up the phone and making contact with Tottenham and say that they want Christian.
"And that they haven't done as far as I know. It all depends on Daniel Levy and there has to be another club too. Or I will sit down myself at the table and negotiate a new contract. You can't set a date yourself.
"There aren't many boxes that Tottenham don't tick so if I have to move away, it would have to be a step up."
Asked whether he would seek to run down his contract, Eriksen said: "That is difficult to say. It depends on the possibilities. If there are no exciting offers, why shouldn't I stay at Tottenham?
"If I then sign a new contract, (it) depends on the conditions."
