Football: Home United claim Community Shield in 5-4 shoot-out win over Albirex Niigata

SINGAPORE -Home United have started the 2019 Singapore Premier League (SPL) season on a positive note after beating defending champions Albirex Niigata 5-4 on penalties in the Community Shield on Saturday (Feb 23) evening .
The match was goalless after 90 minutes at Jalan Besar Stadium and no extra time was played for the curtain raiser.
It was midfielder Hami Syahin who netted the decisive penalty as the shoot-out went to sudden death after both teams had each missed two of their first five kicks.
The roulette was decided after defender Naruki Takahashi's effort rebounded off the bar and Hami, 21, stepped up to tuck his shot low into the bottom corner to claim the silverware for the Protectors.
In a scrappy first half, chances were few as both sides sized each other up with a series of crunching tackles and neither team pressing high up the pitch.
The best chance of the half fell to the Protectors in the 35th minute when forward Iqram Rifqi drifted wide to float in a teasing cross but Shahril Ishak was unable to connect with goalkeeper Kengo Fukudome already beaten.
It was also noted that defending SPL champions Albirex - who won the title in an unbeaten run, playing slick attacking football last year - had adopted a more direct style this campaign.

New league rules also dictate that the White Swans must sign at least four Singaporean players with at least two required to start and play the entire first half of every game.
Against Home, midfielders Firas Irwan and Zamani Zamri, both 18, were in the first XI although both were taken off at half time.
It was more of the same after the interval as neither side could dominate the game and it was scoreless at the final whistle as the match went to penalties.

SAO PAULO (REUTERS) - Brazilian soccer great Pele had a successful operation to remove a kidney stone on Saturday (April 13), doctors in Sao Paulo said.
Pele had the surgery at the Israelite Albert Einstein hospital.
"The procedure was a success and the patient is back in his room," a brief statement from doctors said.
Considered by many the game's finest player and the only man to have won three World Cups, Pele had also been admitted to hospital in France last week after suffering a fever following an event in the city with French World Cup-winner Kylian Mbappe.
He was soon released but his doctors in Brazil decided to admit him again when he returned home on Tuesday.
The 78-year-old former Santos and New York Cosmos player has suffered from kidney and prostate problems and also had hip replacement surgery in recent years.

The easy part was to promise entertaining, attacking football but Nazri Nasir walked the walk when he guided the Lions to a 1-0 win over Malaysia in the AirMarine Cup last night, in his debut as the caretaker national coach.
Even with an inferior 48 per cent of possession, Singapore made better use of the ball to craft seven chances, hitting the target half a dozen times as compared to one shot on target in eight attempts for the hosts.
And when the winner came in the 83rd minute, it was a lethal blend of precision and chemistry as Khairul Amri took out four yellow shirts with a through pass for Faris Ramli to calmly slot past goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat.
The team could not be reached at press time.
The match was played before a sparse crowd at the 90,000 capacity Bukit Jalil Stadium as many Malaysian fans reportedly boycotted the match owing to the RM35 (S$11.60) admission price.
Still, to win away in the Tigers' den was a creditable result considering that the hosts had reached the final of the recent Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup while the Lions crashed out in the group stage.
Nazri kept his pre-match promise and fielded an attacking 4-3-3 system with big changes in all departments.
First-choice defender Shakir Hamzah had to miss the derby owing to family issues and in his place, Amirul Adli, was recalled after a four-year absence and given his first start, alongside Safuwan Baharudin in central defence.
Playmaker Shahdan Sulaiman was preferred ahead of midfield pivot Izzdin Shafiq, while the unpredictable Iqbal Hussain started in place of tricky winger Gabriel Quak in the right forward role.
It was Singapore who had the better chances, as Khairul Fahmi had to pull off a save in the 12th minute after Yasir Hanapi intercepted the ball from defender Shahrul Saad.
A minute later, Yasir hammered a volley off Shahdan's corner but was denied by the goalkeeper again and the Melaka United custodian was in action a minute later, this time denying Khairul Amri's close-range attempt.
Malaysia had a period of dominance on the hour mark as they upped their tempo with Australia-born right-back Matthew Davies and winger Mohamadou Sumareh, originally from Gambia, stretching the Lions.
And it was captain Zaquan Adha who wasted the best opportunity in the 65th minute, when he connected with midfielder Akram Mahinan's cutback only for goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud to save with his legs.
At the final whistle, an emotional Nazri knelt down on the turf in prayer. Not only had Singapore won the Causeway derby, the Lions had done it playing positively, passing the ball accurately instead of aimless punts forward.
In the earlier game yesterday, Oman - under new Dutch coach Erwin Koeman - thrashed Afghanistan 5-0 at the same venue. Singapore will now face the Omanis at Bukit Jalil on Saturday night in the final, while Malaysia will play Afghanistan for third place in the late afternoon.

Football: PSG thrash Dijon in first outing since Champions League nightmare

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain shook off their Champions League hangover and resumed their canter towards another French Ligue 1 football title on Tuesday (March 12), as they cruised to a 4-0 win in Dijon.
Marquinhos, Kylian Mbappe, Angel di Maria and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored PSG's goals in their first outing since their disastrous exit from the Champions League in the last 16 at the hands of Manchester United last week.
The result left Thomas Tuchel's team 17 points clear of Lille in second place, and they still have a game in hand. With a French Cup semi-final to come next month, a domestic double remains a possibility, but any celebrations here were low key for a club whose priority has long been Europe.
"It was a first step to show that we could react like champions. It was a good reaction," said Tuchel.
"We still have objectives and we want to win the league and the Cup."
The PSG squad had been given three days off in the wake of their 3-1 home reverse against United, which eliminated them from the Champions League on away goals, the third season running in which they have gone out in the first knockout round.
Their return to training on Sunday had been marked by tensions between players and unhappy supporters hurling abuse, and it remains to be seen what kind of welcome they receive when they play host to Marseille this weekend.
"I want our supporters to show that we are all together. That is the only thing to do," said Tuchel.
"One VAR decision must not change that. The supporters are disappointed, like us, but now is the time to show we are together."
Referring to the Champions League exit, and the nature of it, the German added: "We must accept that result was an accident. Stay calm and maintain our confidence in this team."
A Dijon side battling to avoid relegation were the ideal opponents for PSG, with the visitors going ahead inside seven minutes when Marquinhos headed home from a di Maria corner.
The PSG line-up featured just four changes from last Wednesday's Champions League game, with Gianluigi Buffon and Thilo Kehrer dropping out along with the banned Dani Alves and injured Julian Draxler.
Mbappe got the second shortly before half-time, bundling in a Layvin Kurzawa centre from close range for his 25th league goal of the campaign.
The World Cup-winning striker later hit the woodwork, but that was after di Maria had curled in a free kick five minutes into the second half.
Choupo-Moting came off the bench to wrap up the win in stoppage time from a Thomas Meunier cross, as he got his first goal since his debut for the club in September.

Football: Man City suffer shock Premier League defeat by Crystal Palace

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Manchester City conceded ground to leaders Liverpool atop the Premier League on Saturday (Dec 22) after a stunning Andros Townsend goal contributed to a jaw-dropping 3-2 victory for Crystal Palace at the Etihad.
The defeat ended City's perfect home form in the league this season and arrived 28 years to the day since Palace last won on the road against the Blues.
City had not lost any of their previous 52 league games against teams outside the traditional "big six", a run dating back nearly two years to a defeat at Everton in January 2017.
But after Ilkay Gundogan had handed them the perfect start, City were undone by goals from Jeffrey Schlupp, Townsend and a Luka Milivojevic penalty - all three coming in an 18-minute spell.
Palace, trailing to Gundogan's well-placed headed opener, turned the game on its head with two goals in as many minutes just after the half hour.
First, City were badly exposed in midfield, failing to deal with Wilfried Zaha and Townsend, who played in James McArthur.
John Stones finally made a tackle but succeeded only in pushing the ball on to Schlupp, who capitalised on some uncertain defending from Kyle Walker, driving the ball past the defender and the diving goalkeeper Ederson into the far corner.
The Etihad crowd, who had been expecting another effortless victory after taking the lead, were stunned into silence and the situation was about to worsen.
A free-kick was headed out by Aymeric Laporte, Gundogan missed a chance to clear his area and Bernardo Silva succeeded only in heading the ball out to Townsend.
The England international connected with an incredibly well-executed, first-time left-foot volley that soared above the diving Ederson and into the top of the City net from fully 30 yards.
It was a stunning development for a City side that have lost just two home league games - to Chelsea and Manchester United - in the two-and-a-half seasons in which Guardiola has been in charge.

CITY DOMINATION

There had been little sign of such drama as City took their customary stranglehold on the game, enjoying 78 per cent of the possession in the first half.
They took a predictable lead in the 27th minute with an excellently worked goal, Leroy Sane passing the ball back to Fabian Delph on the left wing.

His accurate cross allowed Gundogan to ghost between defenders Mamadou Sakho and Patrick van Aanholt to head a superb finish past Vicente Guaita.
But, with Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne watching from the bench and David Silva and Fernandinho absent from the squad completely, there were surprisingly few moments of real danger from the defending champions.
Guardiola had seen enough four minutes into the second half, bringing on Aguero but not even the club's all-time leading goalscorer could bring about an immediate improvement, with City conceding a third in the 51st minute.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka's cross found the head of Townsend, whose effort struck the right-hand post, rebounding into play for Max Meyer and forcing a panicked Walker into making a challenge referee Andre Marriner judged to be a foul.
Milivojevic showed admirable composure to stride up and send Ederson the wrong way from the resulting penalty.
Guardiola brought De Bruyne off the bench in an effort to spark some life into his side's performance and it worked, with a 25-yard Gundogan volley flying just wide and Sane hitting the outside of the post with a terrific 30-yard free-kick.
De Bruyne himself guaranteed a frantic final five minutes as his deep right-wing cross, intended for Sane at the far post was misjudged by Guaita and flew into the top corner for the last goal of the day.
