Football: Liverpool beat Southampton 3-1 to return to top of Premier League

SOUTHAMPTON, United States (REUTERS) - Late goals by Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson earned Liverpool a crucial 3-1 victory at Southampton to move them back to the top of the Premier League on Friday (April 5).
For the second week running Liverpool looked like losing ground on Manchester City in a titanic title race, but once again Juergen Klopp's side would not be denied as they edged a step closer to a first league title since 1990.
With games running out they lead City by two points, although Pep Guardiola's champions have a game in hand.
Locked at 1-1 Liverpool were laying siege to the Southampton goal but it was Salah, who had not scored for eight games, who provided the moment of magic they desperately required in the 80th minute, racing away to score a majestic solo goal.
It was Salah's 50th Premier League goal for Liverpool and six minutes later Henderson, on as a substitute, wrapped it up with a close-range finish.
Shane Long had made it a nail-biting night for Liverpool's massed ranks of supporters when he fired relegation-threatened Southampton ahead in the ninth minute.
But Liverpool recovered from a surprisingly sluggish start and Naby Keita's header, his first goal for the club, levelled the scores before halftime.

Victory lifted Liverpool to 82 points from 33 games, with City on 80 from 32.
"It was very big. Every game is massive. We've got to win every game. I thought we showed great character in the first half," Henderson told Sky Sports.
"It was a big performance in the second half and a big result."
Liverpool needed a stoppage-time winner to beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield last weekend and they were forced to do things the hard way again at St Mary's.
They were caught cold early on and Long punished them, calmly firing home after Ryan Bertrand's cross was flicked on.
It could have been worse with Long almost making it 2-0 but Keita's header calmed the nerves in the away ranks.
Liverpool dominated after the break but Southampton defended tenaciously, even if they were lucky when Maya Yoshida appeared to bring down Keita in the penalty area.
With the clock ticking down and Southampton enjoying a brief flurry of pressure, Liverpool broke and Salah drove forward at pace, making around 50 metres without a challenge before firing the ball past Angus Gunn.
Southampton, who remain five points above the drop zone, were flattened and Liverpool were spared any late frights when Roberto Firmino found Henderson who stroked home.
An ecstatic Klopp joined in the celebrations on the pitch with his players who face Chelsea at home next week.
"We have 82 points now, that is massive in this crazy league and everyone is waiting for us. I am really proud. It is incredible," the German said.

LONDON â€¢ Virgil van Dijk has voted for Raheem Sterling, one of his biggest rivals for the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Player of the Year award, to win this season's prize in recognition of his improvement at Manchester City.
The Liverpool defender is among the favourites to land the accolade following an outstanding campaign for the Premier League leaders but believes that several City players should be in the running.
Van Dijk ultimately opted for the former Liverpool forward, likely his closest challenger for the honour, with voting rules preventing players backing their teammates.
Sterling, who is believed to have voted for Tottenham striker Harry Kane, has 15 goals and nine assists for Pep Guardiola's team this season as they attempt to retain the league title at Liverpool's expense.
The Netherlands captain said: "I voted for Raheem Sterling. I did what I thought and he deserves it. He's had a fantastic season.
"I could have voted for Bernardo Silva as well and another couple of players from Manchester City.
"But I am just being honest. He has improved a lot as a player. We will see if he wins it."
The 27-year-old also reiterated his focus was on silverware with Jurgen Klopp's team and not individual awards.
He added: "Of course, you're going to be proud (to be in the running for the award), but all the hard work in the training ground is something we all did together.
"It is to win something as a team, a collective thing as a club. Hopefully, that is something that will happen."
Sterling has earned his peers' respect and their votes not only because of his on-pitch exploits but also off it, as an increasingly prominent campaigner against racism in football.
On Monday, the England international issued a defiant message to racists that he was "proud to be black".
Declaring he would rather stay on the field and punish the opposition in the face of racist abuse than be part of an orchestrated walk-off, he added: "My mum has taught me how to love myself, how to love my skin colour and how to be comfortable in my skin colour.
"I wouldn't personally agree with it (leaving the field). I would rather go and win the game because that would hurt them even more.
"They're trying to get you down. If you do walk off as a group, then they win. If you score a goal to win the match, that's an even better feeling, which beats them."
However, the 24-year-old played down his impact as a spokesman on how racism is a blight on the game, saying he "did not really think he can make a difference as this is something that has been happening before I was born".

MADRID (AFP) - Lionel Messi wants Ernesto Valverde to continue as Barcelona coach but admits the team have not recovered from their Champions League loss to Liverpool as they face Valencia in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday (May 25).
After winning LaLiga by 11 points, Barca can complete a domestic double by beating Valencia in Seville, but even that will not erase the disappointment of throwing away a three-goal lead at Anfield.
Valverde conceded his future was uncertain after the loss but the club's president, Josep Maria Bartomeu, has since said the coach will remain in charge.
"I honestly believe the boss has done an impressive job during his time in charge," Messi said at a press conference on Friday (May 24).
"I think that in the defeat to Liverpool, he is practically blameless, we are the only ones to blame for that match.
"That can happen one year. but two years in a row is unforgivable. The boss will obviously be partly to blame but it is the players even more.
"I would like him to continue. Last year, we did the double and even though it was stained by getting knocked out of the Champions League, this year we can win the double again.

"If you look at his two years, there have been two bad games, but beyond those the rest has been good." Valverde was also asked again about his future.
"I have no complaints from the president or the board," said Valverde, who added: "You seem very worried, don't worry so much."
Barcelona were desperate to win the Champions League, after failing to reach the final in four consecutive years while also watching Real Madrid lift the trophy three times in a row.
Since losing to Liverpool, Valverde's team have beaten Getafe 2-0 at Camp Nou before ending the league season with a 2-2 draw away at Eibar on Sunday.
"We are still recovering from the game against Liverpool, at least I am, I just want to win this final and finish the year with another title," Messi said.
"It was a very hard blow and both I and the whole club have had a hard time lifting ourselves, which I think has been shown in the matches we have played since.
"It was hard but that's it, this is a final, it is a title and we have the chance to do a double.
"We need to think that we have to win, like in any other final that we play. Obviously not winning this final would be make things even worse."
Barcelona are chasing a record fifth consecutive Copa del Rey triumph to go with their eight La Liga titles in the last 11 years.
"After a bump so big we have to face things with integrity," said Valverde.
"You cannot hide your head in a hole and disappear off the map. We responded after Anfield in La Liga and now we cannot wriggle out in the cup.
"We have to go all out for a title we have been pursuing since January."
Valverde said Nelson Semedo has recovered from his head injury and is likely to be available while late decisions will be made on Arthur Melo and Philippe Coutinho, who are close to shaking off hamstring and thigh injuries respectively.
But Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele are all out, with Jasper Cillessen expected to start in goal.
Unlike Barcelona, Valencia are flying high after completing a late-season surge by finishing fourth in La Liga last weekend.
The club has not lifted trophy since they won the Copa del Rey in 2008.
"We have the experience that we have," coach Marcelino said on Friday. "There may be something missing in that regard but for sure, we have plenty of heart."

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Marcus Rashford has a claim to being the best striker currently playing in the Premier League as Harry Kane recovers from injury, Manchester United caretaker-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has suggested.
Rashford marked his 150th appearance for United with an outstanding goal as they defeated Brighton 2-1 in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday (Jan 19).
England forward Rashford's 41st goal for the club came six days after he scored the winner against Kane's Tottenham at Wembley, and he now has seven goals in his past 10 appearances in all competitions.
England captain Kane damaged ankle ligaments against United, and is not expected to return to training until early March.
Solskjaer implied Kane, when fit, is the best centre-forward in England's top division, but suggested Rashford, 21, is increasingly showing his potential to be a top-class striker too.
"You can argue for many strikers but I'm glad he's in my team," said Solskjaer, himself a former United forward.
"Harry Kane's injured, so maybe that gives him (Rashford) a better chance to be the best at the moment.
"No one beats him on work-rate, no one beats him on attitude, and at the moment, he's very confident in front of goal."

'BEST FOOTBALL OF HIS CAREER'

The Norwegian added: "He finishes, he tries to shoot, he doesn't think twice about it. At the moment, I think he's playing the best football of his career."
United's win was their seventh in a row in all competitions, as Solskjaer became the first manager in the club's history to win his first six league matches in charge.
Their run has pushed them back into contention for a top-four finish, which would secure qualification for next season's Champions League.

However, despite going 2-0 up before half-time, with Rashford's goal following a Paul Pogba penalty, United endured a nervous finish after Pascal Gross scored for Brighton with 19 minutes left.
Solskjaer, appointed after United sacked Jose Mourinho, accepted the team were still a work in progress.
"We need to improve a few things," he said.
"Defensively, we need to find our shape better. We need to defend better with the ball.
"We were under the cosh, we were winning 2-1, so keep it away from the opposition, let them run.
"At times today, though, we played some fantastic football. We could have scored two or three in the second half."
Brighton, in 13th place, have won just one of their past eight league matches, but showed enough in defeat to suggest they have the quality required to stay clear of trouble.
Chris Hughton's south coast side are seven points clear of the relegation zone, and face Fulham, Watford and Burnley in their next three league fixtures, following next weekend's FA Cup fourth-round tie against West Brom.

'DISAPPOINTING GOALS'

Hughton was annoyed by the way Brighton conceded two goals at Old Trafford, full-back Gaetan Bong failing to stop Pogba's run before fouling him for the penalty, while Gross did not get close enough to prevent Rashford from making it 2-0.
The Brighton manager could also reflect on the fact that top-scorer Glenn Murray lashed a clear first-half chance wide, when they trailed by only one goal.
"We're playing against a Manchester United team in very good form at the moment," said Hughton.
"They're probably pressing higher, and they've got a really good momentum at the moment.
"That's why you know you've got to defend really well against them, and certainly not give away what I would regard as disappointing goals."
The Seagulls boss added: "But as with any team that want to press high with the energy that they do, there are areas to exploit."

LILLE, FRANCE (REUTERS) - Paris St Germainâ€™s Ligue 1 title celebrations were delayed again when they suffered an embarrassing 5-1 defeat by second-placed Lille after being reduced to 10 men on Sunday (April 14).Â
The capital side, who would have clinched their eighth title by avoiding defeat, had Juan Bernat sent off before the break after the Spaniard had cancelled out Thomas Meunierâ€™s early own goal.Â
The hosts made the most of their superiority after halftime with goals by Nicolas Pepe, Jonathan Bamba, Gabriel Magalhaes and Jose Fonte, reducing the gap with the leaders to 17 points with six games remaining.Â Â
PSG, who already missed out on the opportunity of an early celebration when they drew at home to Racing Strasbourg last Sunday, will bag the title if they win their game in hand at Nantes on Wednesday.Â
