Reds the hungrier side, says Van Dijk

LONDON â€¢ Virgil van Dijk believes Liverpool will want victory more than Everton in the Merseyside derby today owing to the ramifications in the pursuit of the Premier League title.
Everton have not beaten Liverpool since October 2010 and a winless sequence of 16 league derbies is the longest barren spell in the club's history. The manner of Liverpool's victory in the 96th minute of December's derby also smarts for Marco Silva's side, whose form plummeted afterwards.
However, none of those factors compare with the prize of landing Liverpool's first league championship since 1990, according to van Dijk, who insists the greater motivation at Goodison Park today will be among the players in red.
The Liverpool defender said: "I've played in the Old Firm (Celtic v Rangers) derby, which is really intense. But this is the Premier League and it's totally different.
"It will be a game that can go either way and sometimes in these type of games it is who wants it the most.
"We are in a position where we definitely want it the most and hopefully we can show it on the pitch."
The Dutchman expects "a game full of passion" and says he will thrive on the knowledge that Everton, like Manchester United last weekend, are desperate to damage their rivals' title challenge.
"I like that," he said. "It is always something which motivates you even more and it is a great game to play in. It's the derby and it's special but we want to show our quality, win the game - hopefully with good football but if not, we are going to fight for it."
Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is friends with a few Evertonians who want Liverpool to win the league rather than Manchester City. He refused to divulge names for safety reasons; such is the nature of the fierce rivalry of the two clubs.
"I am not allowed to speak about it," the German, who has won five and drawn two of his seven Merseyside derbies, said jokingly.
"I promised I would not say their names because that could cause them problems. Because they know me they think it is better for us (to win the league) than somebody else they don't know."
Klopp believes Liverpool's dominance of the derby in recent years should inspire, rather than intimidate Everton today, when Goodison hosts its 100th league meeting between the clubs.
He said: "That (nine years unbeaten) is much easier to work on for the other side. It is much easier to motivate them and say: 'Come on boys, it's time. It's our moment'. It's much easier for them.
"We respect them a lot as a team. That is how we have to see it. That is how we have to deal with it, not thinking we have had a couple of good results.
"We have had difficult games against Everton but really good results and we have to think about what we did attitude-wise in these games so we were always ready. We have to be that again.
"It is really important we don't take anything - not just in this game but in all games - for granted. Just work for it and the world is open."

LONDON (REUTERS) - West Ham have handed evidence to the police after completing an investigation into racist abuse shouted at Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah during their English Premier League match at the London Stadium on Monday (Feb 4).
A video emerged on social media in which audible racial slurs were directed at the 26-year-old Egypt international as he was taking a corner. The match finished in a 1-1 draw.
The user who posted the video on Twitter said: "I went to watch West Ham vs Liverpool and I was disgusted by what I was hearing. People like this deserve no place in our society let alone football matches."
The Metropolitan Police had told Reuters in an e-mail that officers were in the process of reviewing the footage and West Ham said in a statement on Thursday (Feb 7) that they had given all of their evidence to the police.
"After a thorough and immediate investigation following the abhorrent racist abuse aimed at Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah on Monday night, West Ham United can confirm that it has handed evidence to the Metropolitan Police," it said.
"The club is unequivocal in its stance - such abuse will not be tolerated. There is no place or excuse for this kind of behaviour."
Salah was last year named PFA Player of the Year and the Football Writers' Association's Footballer of the Year after he scored 44 goals for Liverpool in all competitions last season.

LONDON - It would be easy to simply file this one under "Games Manchester United Won Thanks To David de Gea".
And yet, while that particular cabinet must be bulging after the Spain goalkeeper's latest outstanding performance, the Red Devils' 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium on Sunday (Jan 13) was by no means an injustice.
The travelling United faithful celebrated wildly in the stands at their corner of the stadium for some time after the majority of the 80,000 had exited and had every reason to be thrilled.
For it was the way they saw off Mauricio Pochettino's formidable Spurs side that mattered to them. They were gritty, opportunistic, confident.
Even when Spurs had stirred from their slumber - they did not register a single shot on target in the first half - and started testing de Gea, one effort after another, United's players did not panic.
Jesse Lingard shone brighter than his England teammate Dele Alli, Paul Pogba was a cocky, assured presence at the tip of United's midfield trident, and the duo of Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic behind him, so often the target of fans ire during the Dark Mourinho Days, were excellent.
Centre-back Victor Lindelof, meanwhile, stuck to Spurs' chief goal-scorer Harry Kane like a leech, snapping away at his heels and giving him hardly any room in the penalty box.

Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and de Gea drew jeers and whistles from the home supporters for their time-wasting tactics in protecting their lead, and looked fully in control - something that rarely happened before Mourinho's sacking just before Christmas.

It should be noted, though, that the two teams had vastly different build-ups to Sunday's game.
United spent a week basking in the warmth with a training camp in Dubai, while Spurs negotiated a hard-earned 1-0 win over Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final.

Worse still, talisman Kane limped off the pitch after appearing to twist his ankle late on in the game. The team's second highest goal-getter? Asian Cup-bound Son.
Last week, Pochettino, who has been tipped as the leading contender for the permanent manager's job at United, spoke about Spurs having to "operate differently" if they are to take the next step and rub shoulders with the elite of European football. His words were taken as a call for more investment from Spurs, even if he downplayed his remarks later.
If the London club do not spend in the January transfer window, though, the lure of resources at Old Trafford in the summer, could be too much to turn down for Pochettino.

Bayern Munich great and 1990 World Cup winner Klaus Augenthaler roamed the Jurong East Stadium pitch yesterday morning, scouring for talent at the FC Bayern Youth Cup Singapore finals.
It took the 61-year-old German just 10 minutes to be convinced of Nur Muhammad Asis Ijilrali's ability.
The Meridian Secondary School student was one of 16 players shortlisted by Augenthaler and Sebastian Dremmler, head coach of Bayern's international programme, to represent Singapore at the Bayern Youth Cup World Finals in Munich in May.
A final team of 10 will make the trip for the seven-a-side, Under-16 competition which will feature eight teams from seven countries.
Augenthaler said the standard of football he witnessed was a "positive surprise".
When asked if Singapore's youth players are at a disadvantage against Europeans because of their smaller build, the former defender, who played 404 Bundesliga matches and won seven league titles with Bayern, disagreed.
"It's not about the physique," said the 1.82m Augenthaler, who played 27 times for the former West Germany from 1983 to 1990.

The 1.55m, 41kg Asis is thrilled at being shortlisted for the trip to Germany. The 15-year-old had made the news in April 2016 when Turkish giants Galatasaray and Dutch side Feyenoord Rotterdam expressed an interest to invite him to train with them after watching videos of him.
And even though he has played in minor tournaments in Holland and Portugal for the private academy he was a part of then, a move to a club in Europe never materialised, partly owing to the fact he was underage and is not from the European Union.
"I'm very excited to get the chance to challenge myself in Europe again," said Asis, who is now part of the ActiveSG football academy. "I did not expect to get selected today because there were older boys and I think I did not play to my best.
"But I want to keep improving and play better, and work hard to achieve my goal, which is still to play overseas."
National sports agency Sport Singapore (SportSG) also announced a three-year partnership with record 28-time German champions Bayern yesterday.
The tie-up will see both parties join efforts to continue to organise the FC Bayern Youth Cup - into its third edition this year - as well as participate in coach exchanges and overseas education programmes.
Bayern executive board member Joerg Wacker said the club experienced Singaporeans' passion for football when their first team featured in the pre-season International Champions Cup tournament in July 2017.
"In the past two years, we feel that we share the same vision for football and we are proud to extend our work with SportSG," he said.
"Bayern is committed to contribute extensively and positively to the youth football development in Singapore for many years."
Added SportSG chief executive officer Lim Teck Yin: "We are very happy to have a famous global brand in football as a long-term partner to enrich our existing programmes.

Football: Virgil van Dijk is man of the moment as Liverpool eye home straight

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Virgil van Dijk returns to his former club Southampton on Friday (April 5) with a growing reputation as one of the most influential figures in the Premier League title race between his Liverpool side and Manchester City.
For all their attacking threat, Jurgen Klopp's men owe a huge debt to their Dutch defender, signed from Southampton 15 months ago for an eye-watering Â£75 million (S$134 million) fee, the size of which raised eyebrows.
But now the investment looks one of the wisest in recent Premier League history, with one Van Dijk moment in particular, during the weekend win over Tottenham, being held up as an example of his peerless form.
With the game finely poised at 1-1 at Anfield on Sunday, Tottenham had a two-on-one break, featuring Moussa Sissoko and Son Heung-min against the Liverpool centre-half.
Van Dijk took the decision to leave Sissoko with the ball, forcing him into a shot that the nervous Tottenham man missed hopelessly, paving the way for Liverpool to snatch a dramatic last-gasp winner.
"Of course," said teammate Andy Robertson when asked if that one moment showcased Van Dijk's skills to their utmost.
"He made the right decision there. Look, it's getting to the point of the season where both teams wanted to win it. If it's maybe in the first month of the season, it probably sees out as a 1-1 draw.
"But they're fighting for Champions League spots and they needed three points and we needed three points. That's why we brought on extra attackers and we went for it and tried to get the three points and luckily we did.
"But these situations are going to happen. We're maybe going to get a wee bit exposed at the back but there's nobody better to deal with it. Luckily we got away with one there and they've not got away with it."
Robertson was not the only admirer following the Dutchman's role in that victory and, with every passing week, the case for Van Dijk to be named as the Premier League's player of the year is gaining momentum.
Liverpool's protracted bid to sign the defender from Southampton, which had been thwarted the previous summer, was met with disbelief by many as he became the most expensive defender in the history of the game.
But his displays last season, in helping Liverpool reach the Champions League final, answered many of the doubters and Van Dijk's form has, if anything, been even more impressive this season.
Manchester City's Raheem Sterling is another strong candidate for the end-of-season individual awards but Van Dijk has made a strong case and the only slight concern for Klopp after the Tottenham victory was the sight of his key defender using an ice pack on a muscle injury after the game.
However, concerns he could be a fitness doubt for the return to his old club were quickly dispelled when Liverpool showed footage of the 27-year-old taking part in a full training session on Wednesday.
"He's so important to us not only as a player but as a person. I couldn't say a bad word about him even if I wanted," said Klopp.

NICE (France) â€¢ England coach Phil Neville believes his players have "nothing to fear" after beginning their women's World Cup quest on Sunday with a narrow 2-1 win over Scotland, in which a convincing first half was slightly undermined by a less than ruthless second.
Nikita Parris converted from the spot after a Video Assistant Referee review to give the Lionesses the lead and Ellen White added another before half-time.
While Scotland fought back in the second half, with Claire Emslie reducing the arrears, they could not find an equaliser against one of the tournament's favourites.
Revealing he was "really proud" of his team's efforts, Neville said: "It was good to get that game out of the way. It was always going to be emotional and was really hot. We played really well in the first half... started off playing very adventurously.
"When our legs got heavy in the second half, though, we let fatigue get the better of us. We have to keep driving standards higher and being ruthless but I loved every minute."
Having never been named in a World Cup squad as an England player, Neville was always going to enjoy the moment and had no objections with suggestions that the opening goal was harsh on Scotland.
The new rules allow no scope for a referee's discretion even if the offence lacked intent, with Scotland coach Shelley Kerr admitting, while it was "harsh" that Nicola Docherty was penalised after Fran Kirby's cross had flicked off her partially outstretched arm, that "by the letter of the law, it was a penalty".
Neville also reserved special praise for forward Parris, challenging her to take on even more on-pitch responsibilities as "she is someone with another 10 per cent still left in her".
But he urged the players to raise their game if England are to improve on their third-place finish in the 2015 edition and win their maiden world title.
The former Manchester United defender added: "They're a good set of players with good quality and when I see how they play like they did for the first 60 minutes, we are a good team which will progress in the competition.
"But if we drop our levels it will be tougher. We want to be here for the next 27 days."

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has warned his side may have to accept the height of their current capabilities is to be a top-four club after a costly defeat against struggling Southampton.

"If it is our limit, we need to take some decisions in the future." Pochettino accused his players of showing arrogance in the second half at St Mary's and said they need more to get to the next level.
"I cannot come here and say, 'everything is so good, we have fantastic staff and the manager, I am amazing'," he said.
"To understand that if we want more and we want to keep our position in the top four and we want to fight on the quarter-finals (of the Champions League), we need to give more in the future and increase our level."
