Football: Smalling signs new deal with Manchester United

LONDON (REUTERS) - England international Chris Smalling has agreed a new contract with Manchester United until 2022 with an option for the club to extend for a further year, the Premier League outfit announced on Saturday (Dec 15).
The 29-year-old centre half, who has made more than 300 appearances for United since joining from Fulham in 2010, penned the deal ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with Liverpool.
He told the United official website: "It's a great feeling to know the manager and the club back me, I'm looking forward to repaying them!
"This is my ninth season with the club and I am delighted to be continuing my progression with this team.
"It is a real honour to play for Manchester United and we are all now concentrating on the busy schedule of games throughout the festive period," added Smalling, who has made 18 appearances for the club this season.
United manager Jose Mourinho said: "I am very happy Chris has signed a new contract. Chris has been with the club for a number of years and is now one of the senior players within our squad."

Football. Bloody hell! The comeback of all comebacks. Forget what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did as a player on that famous night in 1999, this was a moment like never before.

Final-day hurrahs

Final-day hurrahs
When Manchester City and Liverpool take to the field on the final day of the season tomorrow, it will be the eighth time in the Premier League era that the race for the title has gone down to the wire.
This season is also remarkable for the quality of the two contenders, with City and Liverpool on course to record the third-and fourth-best top-flight campaigns respectively since the league was formed in 1888 (behind Preston North End in 1888-89 and City last year).
City can secure back-to-back Premier League titles for the first time in their history with a win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.
But, if Pep Guardiola's men drop points and Liverpool beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, the Merseyside club will secure their first league title since 1990.

Football: Empty seats dampen Asian Cup atmosphere

Football: Empty seats dampen Asian Cup atmosphere

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Football managers used to screaming themselves hoarse during games are finding little need to reach for a post-match lozenge at the Asian Cup - where their voices echo around sparsely-populated stadia.
This month's tournament in the United Arab Emirates has struggled to attract crowds, with some coaches grumbling about the swathes of empty seats at the continent's showpiece competition.
"I personally think the atmosphere of the Asian Cup could be a little more enthusiastic, more exciting," Iran boss Carlos Queiroz told reporters.
"To be honest not only me but the Chinese, everyone, has been talking about it. (They) expected much better and a more enthusiastic atmosphere all over the country and at all the stadiums."
Hosted under the slogan "Bringing Asia together", the Asian Cup has so far fallen short of persuading enough of the region's fans to turn up and watch games.
Iran look one of the teams to beat, but barely 5,000 watched them thrash tournament first-timers Yemen 5-0 in their opening game at Abu Dhabi's Mohammed bin Zayed stadium - a venue that seats 40,000.
Barely a thousand more showed up to watch holders Australia and four-time champions Japan reach the quarter-finals, while even hosts UAE have played at half-empty grounds.
"We were expecting a bigger turnout," Mohammed Khalfan Al Romaithi, chairman of the UAE General Authority for Sports, told AFP.
"We are surprised by the lack of UAE fans too," he admitted in an interview. "This is a culture that I hope will change. Loyalty must always be there - win or lose."
Teams have complained of poor facilities with one from the Middle East accusing organisers of "cultural insensitivity" for suggesting their players use the hotel pool to recover from games despite many of the deck-chairs being occupied by bikini-clad holiday makers.
Meanwhile, fans have spoken of being asked by Asian Cup officials to leave their allotted areas to fill seats directly opposite the television cameras.
Just a couple of hundred witnessed Qatar's 6-0 demolition of North Korea in Al-Ain as locals snubbed the game and the long-running blockade of the Gulf state by its neighbours meant it was played in an eery silence.
UAE coach Alberto Zaccheroni bizarrely blamed "cold weather" for another disappointing turnout when his side beat Kyrgyzstan 3-2 in extra time to reach the last eight this week.
"Maybe they preferred to stay home and watch it on television," shrugged the Italian, opening another can of worms.
Oman coach Pim Verbeek wanted to watch Asian Cup matches on TV but was puzzled to find they were largely unavailable at hotels, many of which don't show Qatari rights holders beIN Sports.
"It's a pity the games are not on television," shrugged the Dutchman. "I miss that in this tournament."

Football: Firmino hat-trick takes Liverpool nine points clear with Arsenal thrashing

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool roared back from a rare Anfield deficit to move nine points clear at the top of the Premier League as Roberto Firmino's hat-trick inspired a 5-1 thrashing of Arsenal on Saturday (Dec 29).
Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were also on target as Liverpool's front three all scored in the same league game for the first time this season.
Liverpool had trailed at home in the league for the first time in a day short of a year when Ainsley Maitland-Niles turned home Alex Iwobi's excellent cross 11 minutes in.
However, the lead lasted just three minutes as Firmino profited from some calamitous Arsenal defending to level and then left Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos on the floor to score his second goal in three minutes.
Mane and Salah's penalty had the game wrapped up by half-time and Firmino completed his hat-trick from the spot as Jurgen Klopp's men extended their unbeaten league start to 20 games and took another significant step towards a first league title since 1989/1990.
"The reaction was obviously absolutely brilliant," said Klopp.
"We haven't conceded too many goals this season, especially the first one, so you don't know what the reaction would be."
Manchester City now trail the pace setters by 10 points and, even if they reduce that lead to seven with victory at Southampton on Sunday, the champions need to end Liverpool's invincible season so far when the sides meet on Thursday at the Etihad to get back in the title race.
However, Klopp repeated his plea of recent weeks for his players not to get carried away.
"We never thought about that," he said of Liverpool's nine-point advantage.
"It's a supporters and journalists game, but we cannot be a part of it."

Tottenham's title ambitions suffered a huge blow as Wolves scored three times in the final 18 minutes to win 3-1 at Wembley earlier on Saturday to further embolden Anfield with belief before kick-off.
"For sure Tottenham's result people out there reacted, but not inside the dressing room where they were completely concentrated on the match and not allowed to have that influence our game," added Klopp.
That confidence could have been shaken when after a bright Liverpool start, it was Arsenal who led when Iwobi's teasing cross perfectly dissected Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk, to leave Maitland-Niles with an open goal.
But after a slow start, Salah, Firmino and Mane are beginning to show the form they did last season in smashing a combined 91 goals.
Firmino didn't even have to look at the ball when he slotted the equaliser into an empty net after Sokratis's attempted clearance rebounded off Mustafi into his path to quickly level.
However, the Brazilian did all the hard work himself two minutes later by jinking through Arsenal's hapless central defensive pairing before drilling low past Bernd Leno.
"It's a difficult moment for us," said Arsenal boss Unai Emery, whose side could slip five points adrift of the top four if Chelsea win at Crystal Palace on Sunday.
"We spoke in the dressing room, it is another experience for us, but from bad experiences you learn."
Mane made it 3-1 on 32 minutes when Salah cushioned a cross perfectly into the Senegalese's path to side-foot high into the net.
And Liverpool were given the chance to extend their lead just before half-time when Salah tumbled under pressure from Sokratis in the box.
Leno got a touch to the Egyptian's spot-kick but couldn't stop Salah moving level with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Harry Kane as the Premier League's top scorer on 13.
Salah gave up the chance to move clear in the race for the golden boot when Sead Kolasinac pushed Dejan Lovren 25 minutes from time and Firmino gratefully fired home the penalty much to his manager's delight.
"Mo Salah gave the penalty to Bobby and I almost cried because we all know how much Mo wants to score goals," added Klopp.
"It was one of the nicest things I've ever seen in my life, just outstanding. So far the gesture of the season."

Reds not giving up yet

Reds not giving up yet

LONDON • Liverpool face an uphill task to qualify for their second straight Champions League final but, even at 3-0 down, manager Jurgen Klopp believes the tie is not lost yet as "we have another game and our people will be there".
Barcelona captain Lionel Messi orchestrated the Reds' heaviest defeat of the season with two goals, his second a stunning free kick into the top corner to bring up a staggering 600 goals for the club, 14 years to the day since his debut goal.
While Klopp conceded that "in these moments, he is unstoppable", the manager took heart from his team's Nou Camp display - declaring he "did not know if we can play it much better" and claimed he "was happy in how we defended the whole Barcelona team".
He said: "I am a big admirer of them, as is everybody, but my boys didn't show too much respect. We played football and I liked that.
"Football is like this. It is about scoring goals and they scored three and we scored none. The boys played a super game, to be honest but, against a side like Barcelona, a few moments are enough to give them the opportunity.
"It was the best Champions League game we played, not only this year, but last year as well - how we defended, how brave we were in these situations, how we were when we got the ball.
"We were not always brilliant, but we controlled the game in moments and created. Maybe not constantly (creating) chances, but we had moments."
James Milner and Sadio Mane had shots saved while Mohamed Salah struck the post to give Klopp hope, with Roma last season and Deportivo La Coruna in 2004 the only teams to have overcome a three-goal deficit to advance in Europe's top club competition.

His players were also on the same page despite suffering a blow yesterday after local daily Liverpool Echo revealed that Naby Keita, who went off early in the first half and would miss the rest of the season after suffering a small tear in a groin muscle.
Virgil van Dijk, the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year, told the club website: "There's a big job to do over at Anfield. We have shown throughout the season we never give up, so we have to just believe."
Fellow defender Andy Robertson also insisted his teammates will continue to "fight for everything".
The Reds' belief that they can conjure up a comeback next Tuesday, which would surely rival the 2005 "Miracle of Istanbul", has also put Ernesto Valverde on notice.
The Barca coach pointed to their shock quarter-final exit last term at Roma despite a 4-1 cushion from the first leg and insisted he would be taking nothing for granted.
He said: "The tie is still open and we haven't got through yet.
"They were better than us for some spells and we know what awaits us over there. I see a team that has the ability to make any team suffer."
As it was, it took a wonderful pass from Jordi Alba, turned in adroitly by former Liverpool favourite Luis Suarez just before the half-hour, to undo the visitors who combined disciplined defending, dogged midfield play and intelligent, energetic pressing.
Midfielder Arturo Vidal admitted: "Things will be much harder over at their place than tonight."

Football: Sala's missing plane found, say investigators

LONDON (AFP) - The missing plane carrying Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala and his pilot has been found, investigators told AFP on Sunday (Feb 3).
"I can confirm it has been found," a spokeswoman for Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said.
She said the AAIB would issue a statement on Monday.
Sala was travelling from France to join up with his new club, Premier League side Cardiff City, in a light aircraft on Jan 21 when it went missing close to the Channel Islands.
Suspected debris from the plane washed up on the Normandy coastline in France last Wednesday.
Sala was flying in the Piper PA-46 Malibu plane after transferring from French team Nantes in a €17 million (S$30 million) move.
It vanished from radar around 20km north of Guernsey, with pilot Dave Ibbotson the only other person aboard.

David Mearns, whose private company, Blue Water Recoveries, was hired by Sala's family to search for the plane, said on Twitter that the wreck was spotted early on Sunday.
